Penalty Mitigation in the Immigration Reform Bill [White House Spokesman Responds: Post #53]
Free Republic ^ | 6-13-2007 | philman_36

Posted on 06/13/2007 6:57:12 AM PDT by philman_36

This morning on Fox and Friends there was made mention that much stricter fines are in the immigration reform bill. While this is true many folks may not know about a few words that follow the language about the tougher fines. Those words make a travesty of any "fines" as they can be waved and the employer could walk away owing nothing in penalties.

Here are the words I've got a problem with...

(D) The Secretary is authorized to reduce or mitigate penalties imposed upon employers, based upon factors including, but not limited to, the employer's hiring volume, compliance history, good-faith implementation of a compliance program, participation in temporary worker program, and voluntary disclosure of violations of this subsection to the Secretary.

So while we're being told that "the penalties are tougher" we aren't being told that under some circumstances employers can face reduced or even no fine whatsoever.
At this point of time in our history America can't afford our officials not being completely truthful to us and not stating that the possibility exists for employers to potentially be let off the hook completely is simply unacceptable.

So if President Bush himself showed up and gave a post about immigration, he’d get zotted?

Sho' nuff.

Keep in mind that the WH had the courtesy to respond to our concerns.

Aint enough.

No, he hasn’t responded at all. Simply another hit and run poster. He seems to think we should all “Ooh.” and “Ah.” and bow down to his superior wisdom.

Nobody is falling for this joke of a bill. The laws from the 1985 bill were never enforced and we all know none of these will be either. It's just lip service to get it passed and they think everyone will just forget what was in the bill (again, just like the 1985 bill).

Unless you first stop the flood of aliens with a real fence that works you will never have my support on anything that addresses those already here. I vote every time and I donate but I won't give a nickel until I see a fence or a serious effort to build one.

Why the President has decided to support the wholesale destruction of our culture by allowing half of Mexico, Central America, and probably some terrorists, to invade us without time to assimilate is beyond me. I've supported him all along but no longer. I'm done.

Dear Mr. Thompson:

The President deeply insulted me and many other FReepers as well a many Conservatives. We will not forget that. We are tired of his NAU agenda and the following NWO. No point in denying it there is too much proof. We want the BORDERS shut down - note it is plural. I do not want ANY person who got here illegally to be rewarded with the precious gift of "Citizen of the United States". I (and many others) do not trust the President to do ANY of the things to tighten border security in his proposal today. He has no credibility here. He has had six years to deal with that.

We will fight to our best ability ANY bill that allows "amnesty" or any other reward of citizenship to a CRIMINAL.

The White House needs to listen to the public. There are between 65-80% of the American public, on both sides of the aisle, who are against ANY kind of amnesty until the borders are sealed. Can you remember anytime in recent history when over 65% of America agreed on anything?

We just got warmed up and mobilized last week. We are ready for the next round and you are not prepared for the volume and intensity of it.

If you want a bill that we will not resist then you just need to read more on FR. There are many great effective solutions to the problem. We will not stand for any amnesty.

Sincerely,

A VERY motivated FReeper.

As a legal immigrant who moved here over 20 years ago, who went through all the legal channels, whose older brother (over 18) had to wait over FIVE years until my parents got their citizenship and managed to petition in his favor I have to tell you that you guys, plain and simple, SUCK. Where is the fairness to the ones who do not have the geographic proximity advantage to move to this country? Where is the fairness for my brother who had to wait all these years so all our family can be together? Where is the fairness and respect for all the legal immigrants who actually had the decency to respect the law of the land?Continue to ignore us, the voters and shortly you will have nobody voting GOP. This is MY party, you guys are suppose to represent us and instead you are turning a deaf ear to us.

How on earth are you considering giving amnesty to all these people who broke the law just by being here when immigration laws are very clear about not qualifying to apply for legal status if one entered the country illegally?

Continue to anger us, ignore us and you will see the outcome at the polls. Unfortunately the whole nation will lose by electing a Democrat and you alone will be responsible for destroying our beautiful country.

I am in healthcare and when one facility is going in such crisis the only answer is to completely shut it down and rebuilt it all together. It is time to do the same with the GOP, flush out all the Liberal non-sense and bring back the Reagan conservatism.

Why are you posting this now?

Looks to me and to countless others that the back room deals are already done and your employer, Bush, now has the votes for cloture. And don't bother with the Amendment arguement, Kennedy would never agree to any Republican amendment if it stood a chance in hell of passing.

So how does it feel to support legislation that actually allows gang members and other assorted criminals probation and a "path to citizenship"? Feel proud?

Please tell President Bush we appreciate that he now understands how much we all want enforcement first.

The second most important matter is the immediate and automatic legalization of over 12 million people who may or DO NOT want to be citizens of this the greatest country in the world. This issue still exists within the Bill.

This is the issue we will not budge on.

We are his faithful and thank goodness daily, for his presidency, because of his tough stand in the WOT. Please do not sell us short.

Thank him for everything thing else he's done for us...we talk about these things here daily on "The Dose" (A Day in the Life of President Bush) and we all love him there. We just do not understand why he wants us to go somewhere we cannot follow.

Thank YOU for taking the time to write to us, and hopefully letting him know how we feel.
