Hispanic Voters Enjoy New Clout With Democrats

WASHINGTON, June 9 — Helped by the fight over immigration, Democrats seeking their party’s presidential nomination are moving to court Hispanic voters like never before, as a string of early primary states with sizable Hispanic voting blocs prompt candidates to hire outreach consultants, start Spanish-language Web sites and campaign vigorously before Hispanic audiences.

The battle for Hispanic voters is a result of the decision by several states with large Hispanic populations to move their presidential primaries to early 2008, including California, Florida and New York. Roughly two-thirds of the nation’s Hispanic residents live in nine of the states that will hold Democratic primaries or caucuses on or before Feb. 5.

Strategists say the influence of Hispanic voters is likely to be amplified next year because of an unusually intense response in many Hispanic communities to immigration policy. Conservative Republicans, with the help of some left-leaning Democrats, teamed up to derail an immigration bill in the Senate on Thursday that would have provided a path to citizenship for illegal immigrants.

English only ballots would be useful at a time like this.

Delusional to think that Ds are going to do anything different for any special group. Elect a D for Pres. What would that do aside from raise taxes and increase pointless social spending, which doesn't actually improve life for anybody.

A pointless discussion. The more on government handouts that are kicked out of the country represents less dem voters. I have legal Hispanic friends & relatives & they are livid about this immigration scam.

Exactly, and I would support a candidate who would court the American citizen, they are the only ones who can legally vote, but then it seems “legally” is not a word the democrats and some republicans understand..

If the GOP wants to commit political suicide by passing amnesty, well you know now why they're called The Stupid Party. Appeasing Hispanics by granting amnesty to illegals as much chance of earning their vote as the GOP's vote for the civil rights bills back in the 60s earned it the undying support of the Black Community. Those who don't learn from the past are condemned to repeat it. No wonder the Senate GOP is clueless about what the bill their leadership is foolishly backing would do to the party's political fortunes.

Yes, they are, and rightly so. The more I see the less I expect FedGov to do anything right anymore.

Actually, most Hispanics, citizens or about to be citizens, are opposed to illegal immigration as well.

The permanent Hispanic underclass—New York Puerto Ricans, LA Mexicans—will always vote Democrat. The Democrats promise welfare and government benefits and pledge to finance this by extorting resources from the productive members of society. The appeal of sloth, envy and begrudgery is powerful.
Productive Hispanics who actually contribute to society rather than hope to take, take, take,—Miami Cubans, entrpreneurial, hard working Mexicans—will drift toward the Republicans. No story here.

The other part of the story, which is left unsaid, is that black voters are becoming increasingly irrelevant because of the demographic changes. The Democratic party thinks (not without reason) that they own blacks lock, stock and barrel, and the party thinks that they won't go anywhere regardless of how badly they are treated. Never mind what the 'black leadership' may threaten. When the voters go into the booth, they will pull the lever for Democrat. So they can be ignored.

The good news is that some black voters are beginning to leave the plantation, the party of slavery and Jim Crow and come over to the party of Lincoln.

I wish they would break up the "Hispanic" thing. My guess is that those "hispanics" they speak of are largely Mexicans and perhaps Puerto Ricans. There are other Hispanic groups, who tend to be Republican, including Cubans, Venezuelans, and Colombians. I guess most of America's Hispanics are the two former groups.

Its just kinda weird hearing about Democrat Hispanics when you live in South Florida, knowing so many conservative Hispanics down here (who, not coincidentally, are largely Cuban, Venezuelan, and Colombian...)

It will be interesting to see how the Republicans do with blacks next time around since the democrats are going all out to marginalize them in this country.

It was Republican leadership that defeated this amnesty plan.

...after being deluged by their base.

African-American Democrats (i.e. 95% of blacks in America) are starting to understand that this "new clout" enjoyed by Hispanics is coming at their expense.

Accordingly, I just don't see where Comprehensive Immigration Reform advocates will ever achieve the 60 votes needed for cloture. Too many Democrat Senators keep their plush offices thanks to overwhelming support of black voters.
