. . . Part of the problem with amendments has been that any change -- no matter how mild -- threatened to disrupt and possibly destroy the fragile coalition of senators that has come together behind the bill. The most critical amendment was that of Sen. John Cornyn (R-Tex.), to restrict legalization of violent felons and gang members. That amendment failed 51 to 46, but a weaker version by Sen. Kennedy passed.
With the sudden, unexpected death of Sen. Craig Thomas (R-Wyo.), opponents of the immigration reform compromise bill on the Senate floor this week lose a vote they already could not spare. The defection of high-profile opponents of last year's immigration bill, including Senators Kyl, Johnny Isakson (R-Ga.), Trent Lott (R-Miss.) and Saxby Chambliss (R-Ga.), has diminished the opposition to roughly 30 conservatives. The only hope of blocking the bill comes from objections over process, not policy.
President Bush did himself no favors last week by denouncing those opposed to the immigration bill as uninterested in the nation's well-being. On its own, the decision to combine border security with naturalization of illegal immigrants has always been the President's way of holding a national priority (security) hostage to a policy (legalization) that he views as desirable.

This aendment currently has the Senate divided, and could wreck this sorry bill.
CALL CALL CALL!
Isn’t it lovely!?! I’m particularly looking forward to tens of thousands of legalized felons walking the Florida streets with my daughter. There is an old saw in criminal justice “Show me a second story man and I’ll show you a rapist.” In other words, break and enter criminals in the dead of the night, if caught by a woman, will very often beat and rape her. We are about to grant amnesty to a ton of them.
The 51 morons who voted against this amendment have exposed themselves to some devastating campaign rhetoric. I can already see/hear the television/radio advertisement in the 2008/2010/2012 campaign . . .
"Senator [X] even voted to provide legal status to violent felons and gang members who have entered this country illegally."
It doesn't get any more basic than this, folks. How f#%&ing stupid can these people be?
I’m stunned that they are giving amnesty to felons. The depravity and stupidity of that . . . words fail me.
the American people said they don't want it right now by rejecting an immigration bill that included enforcement....WE TRIED!
What a farce.

Last February, federal agents removed box after box from Haque’s accounting business, Ahbrar CPA, on Lorain Avenue in Cleveland. The seizure of those documents, investigators say, are what lead to the new charges. Haque and the 13 others are charged with creating false documentation for immigration purposes, money laundering, falsifying payroll records, filing false tax returns, mail and wire fraud and more. Four of those charged Wednesday, including Haque, were also charged last April. He along with his wife, brother and a long list of employees from the Cleveland area are now part of that growing list facing charges.
Where all this money was going or what the big picture motive was for these activities is not being elaborated on.
Haque’s Cleveland accounting firm after getting tips that Haque was sending money abroad to terrorists.

“Im stunned that they are giving amnesty to felons. The depravity and stupidity of that . . . words fail me.”
They voted FOR the weaker version by depraved felon Sen. Kennedy.
Does the U.S. Senate have no shame whatsoever? Has it really gotten so bad that an amendment to restrict legalizing violent illegal alien felons and gang members was defeated? How could you vote against that? Are those the "hard working people doing the jobs Americans just won't do", that BS line Bush and Kennedy keep shoving down all our throats?
Lott, Chambliss, Isakson and whoever else defected from their stances just last year most likely did so because the White House called them and threatened to take away pork projects or whatever if they didn't. They strongarm these people, forcing them to be good soldiers.
>>I can hear it now when the question comes up about the rest of the fence funding.....
the American people said they don’t want it right now by rejecting an immigration bill that included enforcement....WE TRIED!<<
We already have a law for building the fence. This bill is a diabolical swindle.
The fence bill is NOT FUNDED PEOPLE!!! There has only been a small down payment funded.

Your point is that we can’t trust congress to keep its word on enforcement? That should be obvious by now.
I thought for a second that I was reading something that I wrote. We all seem to feel the same way. What is wrong with the Senate?
Bump
My point is that they are using people like you to blame their corruption on.
With all the newly-minted democrat voters that the amnesty bill will create, it doesn’t matter.
I replied to you elsewhere Diog, but wanted to say that those are same very powerful charts you’re posting.
