Texas lab finds pain medicine in pet food
Tribune Review ^ | June 5 | Karen Roebuch

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration is investigating a Texas laboratory's finding of acetaminophen in dog and cat food, an agency spokesman said Monday. "We're very interested in being able to test these samples ourselves to determine the levels of those contaminants," said FDA spokesman Doug Arbesfeld. "What's significant is these things are there. They don't belong there." ...The contaminants were found in foods that are not among the more than 150 brands recalled since March 16

You know, it doesn’t take too much acetominophen to bring your liver to a screeching halt. It’s a bad way to die.

Well, don’t let your dog drink alcohol if you are going to feed it these brands.

I try to keep very close tabs on the things that go into my dogs’ stomachs. My older guy’s hips are in excellent shape for a nine-year old shep, but he has arthritis in his hocks. He has his good days when it doesn’t seem to bother him at all, and his bad days when his movement is pretty seriously impacted. On the bad days, he gets an aspirin or two which seems to bring him a lot of relief. I’d hate for something to get in his food without my knowledge that’s contraindicated with aspirin...

I’m pretty sure that’s what it is, I have a Basset Tri-Color and she looks very similar to the dog in the photo.

Except I can’t get her to take up smoking.

“Coneley declined to identify the company but said its officials were given the results “well over a month ago.”

What the hell is wrong with these people that they can`t identify the company!?!?

Why do we allow ANY food products, additives, or vitamins that come from China?

(Answer: So cheap-a$$ manufacturers here can save a few bucks. Who cares about the damn customers?)

Nothing in the article about the amount that was found?

Until they come up with some information about the levels of contamination this is meaningless sensationalism.

It's in there, but just not in the excerpt:

The highest level of acetaminophen was found in a dog food sample submitted by a manufacturer, she said. Coneley declined to identify the company but said its officials were given the results “well over a month ago.”

That company should have — but did not — notify the FDA, which first learned of the acetaminophen findings after pet owners posted lab reports on the Internet, Arbesfeld said.

The highest level of acetaminophen found by the Texas lab — 2 milligrams per gram of dog food — is a large amount, Rumbeiha said. That is eight times what a 10-pound cat could safely consume, he said.
