The total number is huge, of course, because we are a huge country. But the murder rate, a more revealing statistic, is relatively modest at 5.35 murders per 100,000.

Wouldn’t it be better comparing Amsterdam to a similar sized city in the US, or doing a US / Netherlands comparison

I don’t think so at all. Break it out by how many per 100k, and all things become even.
The population figure includes Scotland and Northern Ireland, but the crime stats only reflect England and Wales. The population of the U.S. is 300 million, so multiply by five to get a somewhat comparable number.
You're kidding, right? You're not seriously comparing the death rates of 150,000 Americans in Iraq with 300 MILLION Americans in the U.S.
If you think Iraq is safer for Americans than the U.S., I guess it's time we pull out of Iraq -- we need those troops here! /s
