We are just widgets and can easily be replaced by anyone.

Unfortunately, that is the perspective of many of the supporters of this comprehensive immigration reform bill, including President Bush. The problem is that human beings are not widgets or units of labor. They can't be disposed of if they are no longer needed. Guest workers won't go home. The short term need for labor is used as the rationalization for legalizing 12 to 20 million illegals and having guest worker programs. The political and business elites do not weigh the long term economic, social, and cultural costs of bringing in large numbers of high school dropouts who are not interested in assimilating. This will lead to the Balkanization of the country, a loss of national identity, and no sense of shared endeavor. We will have squandered the legacy of our forefathers who fashioned this great country.

You and Laura/Rush cannot support or discuss this bill in a logical manner ........ All that is left is Mexicans and Crackheads, which would you choose for your business?

And this is a logical argument? Calling your fellow citizens Crackheads? Ok.

The thing is though MNJ just because they are here doesn't mean we should roll over an accept that 20 million mistakes happened and there is absolutely nothing we can do about it.

I think there are things we can do about it.

Secure the border and round them up.

Even if it takes years to process them all and send the illegals back it sets forth a new immigration policy.

There is no reason any employer should be allowed to employ illegals,if they do it should be stopped.

One based on the current law of the land, for the country for the future of the country instead of making the same old mistakes over and over and then compounding them.

On the hotel costs I agree and probably will happen but with food I suspect the middlemen and retailers are not prepared to pay more regardless of whether the customer might be. Therefore the farmers will quit producing the crop because they cannot afford to sell it at the same price if they pay going rate for harvesting it.

In Britain we used to have seasonal workers often women would bring their children with them. Health and Safety rules stopped this plus modern machinery meant they needed less. In time though added costs of the machinery outlay and paying going wage meant that the farms closed and produce bought from overseas. We did not get the option of paying more as the stores would not pay more. This will happen in the US as well.

There are few business owners that can not find a way to cure their labor needs without the aid of low priced workers. And ironically it may not even cost them more in the long run!

For example the age old argument of "who will pick the tomatoes, apples, lettuce etc." is largely dispelled by agriculture buying cheap illegal help instead of more expense yet extremely efficient machinery which does the jobs of hundreds of workers but has a relative costly outlay initially.

Today's emphasis is always on "how much money can I make today" not in ten years so we wind up with a bunch of illegals instead of hi-tech machinery.

The old argument of "who will pick the tomatoes, apples, lettuce etc." is simply the twenty-first century version of the "who will pick the cotton" argument of slave-owners 150 years ago. Let's pray we don't have to endure a similar resolution of the issue this time...

No it doesn't since the Illegals, what ever today's magic number of them is, are all ready here and would not be added to the population. They are all ready part of it.

We don't even know how many are here. Estimates range from 11 to 20 million. I am sure the census figures don't capture all those who are really here. Once their status is legalized, they will be able to bring in their wives, children and one set of parents under the current bill. Chain migration rules will be in effect over the next decade tripling the current legal immigration of 1 million. When all is said and done, the nuber will be larger than 17 million.

And once they have a legalized status, they will become entitled to many of the same benefits accorded permanent residents and citizens.

So this is another example of the demagoguery being thrown around by the Ultras that complete guts their credibility on this issue. Less emotional demagoguery and more rational reasoning debate please.

Ultras? We have added 53 million to our population since 1990, 21 million since 2000. 3/4 of that increase can be attributed to immigration, legal and illegal. The Census Bureau projects that we will increase our population by 63 million in the next 23 years or the equivalent of the current population of the UK. If this bill goes through, those projections will increase significantly.

Projected population US

I read that donations are down to the RNC.

Do you know that some people are cheering about this? This will increase Republican majority in elections?

Anita, from what I see on a lot of these FR threads, donors have been shifting their contributions to the individual Republican candidates from the RNC. Also, it's a long way until the primaries and if the FR microcoism of FR is in any way indicative, quite a few donors are waiting until they can donate to Fred Thompson.

I think one can't overlook the depressive effect the defeat in November has had on conservatives in general...we lost not only the majority, but some good people then.

I, for one have been in a state of shock watching the clowns such as Pelosi, Reid, Murtha and the rest of their cohorts make a laughingstock of our legislature while their accomplices in the media ignore their gaffes.

I have been a Bush bot since 2000, but right now I am heartbroken at his attacks on the people who have supported him through thick and thin.

Many of us do not feel that the RNC has the good of the conservative movement in mind.

So who do you figure the Democrats will hype to be the “third party” spoiler to make sure Hilly wins? Looks like they were trying to groom Bloomberg for it but he is way too far left to hurt a Conservative candidate.

If the scenario I described vis a vis Gingrich & Thompson occurs the Democrats won't have to do anything - Hillary will win by default UNLESS she encounters her own third party opponent from the left. In fact, a strong leftist third party challenge, e.g. Bloomberg or Gore, is Hillary's nightmare.
