Reason usurped by blissful ignorance (Gore slags US)
The Australian ^ | 2 June 2007 | Al "The Loser" Gore

Posted on 06/01/2007 8:05:32 PM PDT by Aussie Dasher

NOT long before our nation launched the invasion of Iraq, [the US's] longest-serving senator, Robert Byrd of West Virginia, stood on the Senate floor and said: "This chamber is, for the most part, silent: ominously, dreadfully silent. There is no debate, no discussion, no attempt to lay out for the nation the pros and cons of this particular war. There is nothing. We stand passively mute in the US Senate." Why was the Senate silent? In describing the empty chamber the way he did, Byrd invited a specific version of the same general question millions of us have been asking: "Why do reason, logic and truth seem to play a sharply diminished role in the way America now makes important decisions?" The persistent and sustained reliance on falsehoods as the basis of policy, even in the face of massive and well-understood evidence to the contrary, seems to many Americans to have reached levels that were previously unimaginable.

A large and growing number of Americans are asking out loud: "What has happened to our country?" People are trying to figure out what has gone wrong in our democracy and how we can fix it.

To take another example, for the first time in American history, the executive branch of our government has not only condoned but actively promoted the treatment of captives in wartime that clearly involves torture, thus overturning a prohibition established by general George Washington during the Revolutionary War.

That's not why they were silent. They were silent because just a year or two before, when clinton was President and they knew he would not go after Saddam, they had strongly backed doing so.

That is why they were silent.

"This chamber is, for the most part, silent on the subject of Senator Robert Byrd being a former KKK member: ominously, dreadfully silent. There is no debate, no discussion, no attempt to lay out for the nation the pros and cons of this particular war against full fledged racists. There is nothing. We stand passively mute in the US Senate and wonder why do we tolerate a former KKK member yet rip Trent Lott to shreads for a minor league blooper."

I am asking the same thing, but for completely different reasons than algore is.

They were silent, Mr. Gore, because every Democrat in the Senate had called upon President Clinton to send ground troops into Iraq. They were silent because it was the right thing to do, and guess what, we won.

Sorry, I forget, when you’re a party of losers, winning is losing.

When the Grand Dragon speaks, aren't the rest of the Klan supposed to be silent?

"Why do reason, logic and truth seem to play a sharply diminished role in the way America now makes important decisions?"

Because the libs operate on "feelings" and emotions, instead of facts and rationality.

You mean, the same guy that “Love Story” was written about? The same guy who discovered the Love Canal problem in New York? The same guy who invented the internet?

Yeah, this is that guy.

What you have to understand is what little brain mass Byrd was born with has gone down after all his years. I guess wearing that sheet under the hot sun speeded up the process.

The little turd will never get over the fact that he didn't get elected. Thank God for the republic he didn't.

Ah, one truly beautiful part of history is the role that FR and a handful of FReepers played in preventing the Dade County Vote Cook-In from achieving it’s usual success.

Yup... at that time, FR had real clout. The Dade County chad count was such a threat to this country - we’re really lucky to have escaped the disaster of algore in 2000.
