British Intelligence: Al-Qaida Expanding

British intelligence officials said they believe that al-Qaida has a secure base in Pakistan's Waziristan region and is planning terrorist operations.

The group is reaching out to Muslims in North Africa, The Telegraph reported. Last year, the Salafist Group for Preaching and Combat, an Algerian terrorist group, merged itself into al-Qaida, a move announced by Osama bin Laden's chief lieutenant, Ayman al-Zawahiri, in a tape promising action against the "apostates" in the Algerian government and "the treacherous sons of France."

Al-Qaida is also believed to be planning expansion into Lebanon and Syria, the newspaper report said.

ARTICLE SNIPPET: “MIAMI (AP) - Four armed men with white bandannas covering their faces opened fire at a party early Sunday, killing two people and injuring five others, police said.

Authorities were searching for the suspects, and the shootings were believed to be gang related, police said.”

Report: Militants hold 27 at Nigerian oil facility

Italian oil company Eni said 27 people including 11 soldiers were being held hostage at one of its oilfield stations in Nigeria on Monday after the facility was overrun by militants a day earlier.

No one was harmed or killed in the invasion of the Ogbainbiri flow station in Bayelsa state, which normally produces about 40,000 barrels per day of oil. (Reuters)

“US deports Bangladeshi coup man”

ARTICLE SNIPPET: “A former Bangladeshi army officer has been deported from the United States and then arrested on his arrival in the Bangladeshi capital, Dhaka.

Mohiuddin Ahmed was convicted in absentia in 1998 for his role in the 1975 military coup and assassination of President Sheikh Mujibur Rahman.

Ahmed spent several years fighting his deportation from the US.

He was one of 15 people found guilty of killing Sheikh Mujibur. Most of them were sentenced to death.

Sheikh Mujibur Rahman was the figurehead of the fight for the creation of Bangladesh which had been East Pakistan.”

3rd fire at Jewish retreat

MONTREAL -- Members of Montreal's Jewish community are feeling threatened following the third suspicious fire in less than a month at a popular summer retreat north of Montreal. A private home at the Val-David, Que., camp, about a one-hour drive from Montreal, was destroyed by fire early yesterday. No one was injured in the fire, but police say two other buildings were broken into and it appears there was an attempt to set one ablaze. "More and more as the day goes on I can certainly rule that it was an accidental fire," said provincial police spokesperson Jayson Gauthier. "We're hoping that there will be some evidence within those residences that could lead to some arrests."

Earlier this month, a rabbi's summer home at the camp was razed by flames only days after a smaller fire broke out nearby. Investigators say that both incidents were arson. "It is still too early to say if there is a link between the events," Gauthier said. He added that police are hesitant to label the fires as hate crimes, saying there have been other criminal fires in the Val-David area recently.

Members of Montreal's Hasidic community say they feel targeted by the fires. "We're very, very concerned not only for the safety of our property... but about the personal safety of our families and our children," said Mayer Feig, a spokesman for Montreal's Hasidic community.

As recently as last week, terrorists used falsely marked vehicles in an attempt to carry out their missions. A 'press vehicle' in America is a very easily created cover vehicle.

Police agencies in Colorado turned over the names of at least 15,000 suspected illegal immigrants to federal authorities during the second half of last year. Their offenses ranged from minor infractions to first-degree felonies but each referral was in compliance with a new state law designed to get tough on illegal immigration.

Law enforcement officials, however, debate whether the new law is having its intended effect.

They said they doubt the enhanced reporting has led to any more deportations of criminal illegal immigrants.

“I still sense that there is simply no infrastructure in the federal system in place to actually do anything with these undocumented aliens beyond the occasional, token deportations,” said Aurora Police Chief Daniel Oates.

The law, enacted by the legislature in 2006 as part of a statewide crackdown on illegal immigration, required all cities and counties to report any suspected illegal immigrants arrested or cited for crimes to the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement Agency.
