Jersey jihad shows Bush bungling
Star Ledger ^ | 05.13.07 | Paul Mulshine

Perhaps the lamest bit of spin coming out of the Bush administration concerning the Iraq War is that line, "If we don't fight them over there, we'll have to fight them over here." But just how will they get in? Simple. They'll come over the Mexican border and stay for as long as they please.

That description applies to three of the six men accused in the Fort Dix terror plot. The parents of the three Duka brothers brought them into the country illegally more than 20 years ago. They attended school, grew into adulthood and took advantage of good, old American hospitality as they studied jihad and worked on a plot to shoot soldiers at Fort Dix. Peter Gadiel is pretty steamed up about this. His son was killed in the World Trade Center attacks. Ever since, he has worked with the group 9/11 Families for a Secure America to do something about our porous borders.

"When George Bush stood at Ground Zero after the attacks, he said to America, 'I hear you,'" Gadiel told me the other day. "Well, apparently he lied. He lied then. He lies now, and he lied in between." What he lied about was his promise to secure the borders. Like Gadiel, I was among the many conservatives in America who assumed that Bush's first response to the 2001 terror attacks would be to fix the flaws in our immigration system. His immigration department mailed off visa renewals to two of the dead hijackers.

A fluke? No, it was part of a pattern of lax immigration enforcement. Before long, Bush and his brother, former Florida Gov. Jeb Bush, were encouraging states to issue special licenses to illegal immigrants, even though the 9/11 terrorists had used such licenses to get onto the planes they hijacked.

“immigration department mailed off visa renewals to two of the dead hijackers.”

Is this true? It sounds like one of those 9 11 myths.

What bothers me the most, is that after 9/11, we’ve been attacked again and again. Endless bombings in the US, train stations, airports, dams, schools. The slaughter of americans, on american soil, is soley on Bush’s hands. If he’d just done something to protect us from terrorism!?!?!
Busloads of terrorist and bomb making equipment, just driving right through the Mexican border....

My senator Kay Bailey Hutchison and other senators had a meeting with Bush Jr. She said that after she told him about the calls her office was getting about amnesty, he has a better understanding of the “depth of opposition” to this bill.

But I’m not sure any of them really get it. I am beginning to see many core conservatives, who have supported Bush from the beginning, say that the war in Iraq is not worth it, because:

1) We are about to surrender our borders here, and

2) We have either fools or traitors in charge in Washington. In either case, they have lost our trust.

Bush willingly sends thousands of US boys halfway around the world to fight and die for some foreign country’s security, and spends a billion dollars a month to do it - yet his own backyard border only rates a few hundred troops and a paltry few hundred million dollars budget.

Iraq’s security is more important than the US’s - an American President really expects his people to believe that?

Mark Steyn on the Corner at NRO:

“Mohammed Atta was the second most famous terrorist in the world and on the front page of every American newspaper but the then INS still sent him a valid US visa six months to the day after he died, and without even updating his address from that Florida flight school to Big Hole In The Ground, Lower Manhattan.”

It's true. And Bush did at the least briefly exposed to the public about an INS who - on one side of an office aided and abetted illegals to enter the US, and the other who was tasked to enforce immigration law.

So we created a HUGE federal law enforcement bureaucracy and gave amnesty to who knows how many millions here.

Assuming that you understand that Iran is really a threat to our security, and that you do know that Iraq lies to the west of Iran and Afghanistan to the east, why do you insist the we are concerned mainly with Iraq’s security?

Good point - I read somewhere that the Bush administration is now recruiting Border Patrol agents (from the ICE) to go to Iraq for Iraqi border security - no need for border agents here to stop terrorists on the U.S. border, I guess. Jorge just wants to hand out Z Visas like popcorn to illegals and pass the amnesty.
