Fred Thompson -- " Law & Order " star, former Tennessee senator, and likely late entry into the Republican presidential contest -- just poached one of Mitt Romney's key conservative supporters in Congress.
US Representative Marsha Blackburn of Tennessee, who's been with Romney since January, announced today that she is jumping ship and will now back Thompson if he runs.
"Fred Thompson is a man of uncommon talent, character, and judgment," Blackburn said in a statement. "He is a proven statesman and public servant. He is the right person for these challenging times . . . . I sincerely hope that Fred Thompson will choose to seek the Republican nomination for President of the United States."

Here in Tennessee Marsha is somebody for conservatives to listen to. She was one of the most important leaders in the successful effort to stop our forever to be despised and reviled former RINO governor Sundquist from imposing a state income tax. If Marsha’s for Fred, he’s going to be getting a good contribution from me as soon as he announces. Also, Marsha being form Tennessee, it wouldn’t surprise me if she’s been privately informed Fred’s going to run. GO FRED!!!
I think her defection from Romney is the clearest sign yet that Fred’s in.
No way she’d have burned her bridges with Romney publicly if Fred hadn’t said privately to her, “Marsha, I’m running”.
Marsha’s my rep in Congress. I’ve voted for her twice and have called her office in Washington several times during key legislation battles.
As we say around here, “She’s good people.”
Fred’s running.
C'mon Fred - notice tax reform a a major component!
The way things are going now, all he has to do is call this amnesty bill $hit, and he’s in. Rightfully so.
With us, yes. Shamefully, there are many who don't care as much about the illegals. I would assert that millions upon millions care deeply about tax reform and further that these millions already have established and effective grass roots organization. IMO it will take grass roots to derail the socialist/globalist elites; hence the focus on grassroots organization in place....
well, i can hope, can't I? lol
Heh. After Fred’s harsh rhetoric toward the Shamnesty Bill, I guess we’ll hear less theorizing about him positioninng himself to be McQueeg’s running mate. That dog won’t hunt anymore.
Fred should take up the mantle and make Border Security First, We’ll Worry About the Rest Later, a central theme in his campaign. it has appeal to conservatives, independents and sane Democrats(at least in the South and West)
Go after McQueeg hard and Bush if necessary on the issue.
Mitt, buddy... better get used to it.
From what I’ve read, they’re personal friends as well. She should support him if he runs. A friend standing up for a friend. Good for her.
Bump
>>>if he runs
That's the million dollar (million vote?) question isn't it. I've been hearing rumors of his possible run for a few months now, he better get a move on soon.
“Of the frontrunners, I like Romney. But a little conservative competition will not hurt.
Is Romney a “frontrunner”? Compared to whom. Ron Paul?
“Bring it on Fred!”
New England RINO and johnny-come-lately conservative of convenience VS an authentic Tennessee conservative.
I like Fred’s chances to suck much of the O2 from Romney’s and McQueeg’s campaigns as soon as he enters.
Authenticity is more appealing than fakery to most.
Man I don't care WHO it is as long as it is NOT politricks-as-usual and "from the consent of the politico-elite." That has got to stop or we will loose the nation to third-world communists.
Fred seems to be the best bet. I would laugh all the way to `08 if Thompson/Hunter/Rommney/Tancredo ganged up and kicked the azz of the entire American political system.
Fred ping
Simply put, Fred is not a panderer.
That maxim easily appplies to leadership and executive ability as well. Two areas in which F. Thompson has (imo) a stature gap. CEO of the United States is not the place for on the job training, no matter how smart the understudy is.
