Presidential hopeful John Edwards said Monday that Americans should speak out against the war in Iraq this Memorial Day weekend, renewing an anti-war call that has been criticized by the leader of the American Legion.
"There's another thing we need to do as patriots, to serve the men and women who are serving this country in Iraq, and that is to speak out this weekend," said Edwards, a former senator from North Carolina and 2004 vice presidential nominee.
He said ending the war is key to repairing the damaged U.S. reputation abroad.
"America desperately needs to reclaim our moral position in the world, which has been so devastated," he said. "America has to be a force for good. ... The world thinks we're a bully and we're selfish."
Some leaders of local veterans' groups also have deplored Edwards' call for war protests on Memorial Day.
"I think the senator has the best of intentions," said Stephen Shurtleff, who was co-chairman for veterans outreach on Sen. John Kerry's 2004 campaign. "But I think (Memorial Day) is a time to reflect. I think all the presidential candidates want to end the war, but this Memorial Day is not the time."

I will travel anywhere within a 5 hour radius by train to counter any large protest by the moonbats. This crap has GOT to end.
He’s the son of a mill worker, ya know.
“I’m rich so I know about poverty and I know about war because I was never in one”
Is Edwards going tit for tat with Kucinich?
I’m the daughter of a mill worker, and I know Edwards is totally wrong. It’s scary that he can be so much worse than candidates like Hillary and Obama.
This guy is simply the biggest hypocrite and goober to surface in the political world in a long time. Why anyone would listen to him about anything but “how to be a huckster for fun and profit.”
What this faggot edwards wants is HIS FACE AND CAMPAIGN to upstage what is a solemn day.....he truly has no shame, and I sort of hope the edwards minions (including him and his wife) get out there and try to turn it into what he wants, so all can see him for what he is and be done with him once and for all.
I only wish She-Who-Must-Not-Be-Named would do this kind of crap as well, so we'd be rid of her.
I can scarcely believe I'm reading these anti-American news items, and am flat-out gob smacked that a person espousing such views would even get the slightest consideration as a potential Commander in Chief and President! I'm confident such a person wouldn't ever have gotten one vote from those who ever congregated on our elementary school front lawn after such a parade.

...writing now from a blue state.
This scumbag is the new Carter. Lord willing his ambitions will be nipped in the bud. To think, he came scarily close to being VP. I have an idea! Bush can appoint him special one-way envoy to Darfur.
Does Edwards really truly believe that as President & CiC he can inspire the military to succeed in a time of war when he proposes these nutty anti-war ideas? Unlike a lot of post-9/11 voters and democrats in general, the Military has a long memory. They haven't forgotten what it's like to be butt-raped by Clinton.
Or is he so phenomenally stupid & short-sighted that it hasn't occurred to him yet?
A friend of mine wrote the other day that the only people who seem to hate the military are congress and the press. He said everyone else seems to love them from what he’s seen while enlisted.
And so does Edwards and the American left!
“Edwards Wants Anti-War Memorial Day”
I think I’ll celebrate an ANTI-EDWARDS Memorial Day.
Two things:
1) John Edwards doesn’t give a rip about members of the US armed forces, past or present;
2) He’s a pussy.
I know, that’s a mite stronger than I usually express myself here, but I cannot stand this kind of idiotic sophistry.
