Nope, Owens burned his bridges to the ground here I’m afraid. Huckabee or Gilmore, who knows. I suspect Fred would want two things supplementing his abilities. One to deliver a state and secondly to shore up the lack of executive experience. That is, IF he’s the nominee.
Romney has the reverse problem in that he would need some help attracting southern voters and someone who would shore up any perceived lack of conservative credentials.
Still, Fred Thompson may be the smartest candidate by avoiding the stampede that we are seeing now. He can campaign without being official so he’s not in the competition in the same way.
IF this becomes Clinton v Thompson it will be the first election pitching US Senators in a long while, and every president since Kennedy has been either a current or past VP, or a governor of a state.
THOMPSON/POWELL 08’
The last one I remember was Abe Lincoln.

This is the first time in years that I’ve been genuinely excited about a federal candidate.
Franklin warned us about this in his speech to the Federal Convention on the 2nd of June 1787.....
"there are two passions which have a powerful influence on the affairs of men. These are ambition and avarice;the love of power, and the love of money. Separately each of these has great force in prompting men to action; but when united in view of the same object, they have in many minds the most violent effects. Place before the eyes of such men, a post of honour that shall be at the same time a place of profit, and they will move heaven and earth to obtain it. The vast number of such places it is that renders the British Government so tempestuous. The struggles for them are the true sources of all those factions which are perceptually dividing the Nation, distracting its Councils, hurrying sometimes into fruitless and mischievous wars, and often compelling a submission to dishonorable terms of peace.
And of what kind are the men that shall strive for this profitable pre-eminence, through the bustle of cabal, the heat of contention, the infinite mutual abuse of parties, tearing to pieces the best of characters? It will not be the wise and moderate, the lovers of peace and good order, the men fittest for the trust. It will be the bold and the violent, the men of strong passions and indefatigable activity in their selfish pursuits. These will thrust themselves into your Government and be your rulers---And these too will be mistaken in the expected happiness of their situation. For their vanquished competitors of the same spirit, and from the same motives-will perpetually be endeavoring to distress their administration, thwart their measures , and render them odious to the people."
It's funny that I could't find this speech on the net.
I hope you're not talking about Colin Powell. THAT is a definate NO!!
Good job, Sturm!!
Yep. Seems like the string of governors is broken no matter what.
Yeah, and again, it was something like 20 years from the time he was a congressman til he was the Pres. Clay was a congressman, but then a senator when he ran.
He says things that I think. Can’t get any better than that....haha.
TGO ping.
JB, are you the lead Fredhead on FR?
I hope Fred Thompson is not another disappointment like both Bush 41 and his son Bush 43 were/are......
FRINK!
That I am along with Politicalmom. What is it you require?
Is there anyone on this earth that you agree with 100% of the time? Of course not... or wait a minute— ARE you disappointed in everyone you know?
I’m truly sick and tired of hearing about what a “disappointment” President Bush is. Reading comments like yours, force me to defend him all the more.
Good grief.
Just checking. LP stood up yesterday, because I was asking for a pinglist.
If FDT should wade in, this is a Golden Opportunity. We cannot let this Senate abomination go through, because the House is slippery, and the SCOTUS should not be used as a ‘last line’.
I’ll make a note of it. Thompson is mentioned more and more at the Levin Lounge. You should check it out.
