Good Life of Boomers Tied to Better Life for Immigrants
The Wall Street Journal ^ | Tuesday, May 15, 2007

The quality of life for some 80 million graying baby boomers in the U.S. may depend in large part on the fortunes of another high-profile demographic group: millions of mostly Hispanic immigrants and their children.

With a major part of the nation's population entering its retirement years and birth rates falling domestically, the shortfall in the work force will be filled by immigrants and their offspring, experts say. How that group fares economically in the years ahead could have a big impact on everything from the kind of medical services baby boomers receive to the prices they can get for their homes.

Immigrants and baby boomers are two groups whose destinies are converging in the next 20 years," says Dowell Myers, a demographer at the University of Southern California. "Baby boomers will surrender their economic role to this generation of immigrants and their children," who will evolve into a critical pool of laborers and taxpayers, he says.

Prof. Myers, author of the recent book "Immigrants and Boomers: Forging a New Social Contract for the Future of America," is among a crop of academics studying the link between the giant generation born between 1946 and 1964 and newcomers to the U.S., mainly Latin American immigrants.

The U.S. is undergoing a seismic demographic change that will kick in over the next decade or so. In California, for example, there were 9.7 million baby boomers between the ages of 40 and 49 in 2005, who accounted for 51% of the prime working-age population. By 2020, they will be 55 to 74 years old, with most boomers on the brink of retirement or about to plunge into it.

The weight of this aging population will swell relative to the pool of working-age people. The ratio of senior citizens to prime-working-age people,

If this is true then our Country will need an ever increasing supply of uneducated Mexicans to support the previous generation of uneducated Mexicans who will themselves be aging, etc., etc. After a few generations, Mexico will be drained of all inhabitants.

First we have to get from here to there.

What makes you think that youthful latinos will be at all interested in being heavily taxed to support aging anglos? My own thought is that a heavily latino voter base will at some point have the political clout to shut off SS to primarily anglo recepients.

If you thought that retirement meant genteel poverty for the elderly, living on a small pension and SS, think again. Drop the genteel part, and think about a shrinking SS payment.

So, in 15 years the youngest will age 15 years, but the oldest will go from 49 to 74, aging 25 years. Stinks to be them.

This writer has it all wrong. The real question is; who will subsidize all these Latino immigrants when the boomers die off?

What is the cost of amnesty? The fiscal cost of amnesty for illegal aliens in the country?

ROBERT RECTOR, HERITAGE FOUNDATION: Illegal aliens cost a lot at the present time, but if you give them amnesty, one effect is that they will all have access to Social Security, Medicare, this program called Supplemental Security Income, Medicaid when they retire, OK?

So the real impact of amnesty would be — let’s say you have 12 million people. You give them amnesty. The impact of that, the net requirement cost alone would be negative $2.5 to $3 trillion. Negative $2.5 to $3 trillion.

DOBBS: $2.5 to $3 million?

RECTOR: Yes. And that’s with 12 million. You’re taking 10 million people and putting them into Social Security. That is one of the biggest budget impacts — that is the single budget — biggest budget impact I’ve seen in a quarter of a century. It’s fantastically expensive, and it is fantastically irresponsible for Congress to be contemplating that, and they don’t have a clue in the world, they don’t care what it will cost. RECTOR: You know what? If you look at low-skill immigrants, OK, which most illegals are, in fact, in every stage of their life cycle, they take more in benefits than they pay in, in taxes.

Each — each low-skilled immigrant — and illegals are predominantly low-skilled immigrants — that comes across to the United States, if they bring a family with them, the net cost that they impose on the taxpayers, benefits received minus taxes, is over $1 million over their lifetimes. It’s fantastically expensive.

Ooohhhh the last 2 posts are priceless. WSJ being a shill for the Shamnesty legislation backers for sure, not to mention the meat packers, housing industry, etc., and wealthy politicians employing illegal domestic help.

We allow many OLD immigrants, who will be nothing but a drain.

In 1990 the census counted 3 1/2 million foreign born over age 65. Now, there’s a work force for ya! 450,000 of them were over age 85!

So, if someone can read and understand the WSJ, would it be a mistake to assume they can think? Or, is that pushing the envelope?

The WSJ is all wet. The drain on Government expenditures by tens of millions (if not more) uneducated Latinos will guarantee that SS and Medicare will be cut back. They will hardly be queueing up for well paying jobs of the future. Also, past immigrant groups assimilated cause they were far away from their homeland—not next door. Wait till they start passing laws to reclaim “stolen” land in all the border states. Not only will the Boomers lose their retirement, they will lose their country as well!

What makes you think that youthful Anglos will be any more receptive to the idea?
