After months of giving ambiguous signals on abortion, Rudolph W. Giuliani is planning to offer a forthright affirmation of his support for abortion rights in public forums, television appearances and interviews in the coming days, despite potential consequences among some conservative voters already wary of his views, aides said yesterday.
At the same time, Mr. Giuliani’s campaign — seeking to accomplish the unusual task of persuading the Republican Party to nominate an abortion rights supporter as its presidential candidate — is eyeing a path to the nomination that would try to de-emphasize the early states in which abortion opponents wield a great deal of influence. Instead they would focus on the so-called mega-primary of Feb. 5, in which voters in states like California, New York and New Jersey are likely to be more receptive to Mr. Giuliani’s social views than voters in states like Iowa and South Carolina. They said that approach became more appealing after Florida, another state they said would be receptive to Mr. Giuliani, voted last week to move its primary forward to the end of January.
The shift in emphasis by Mr. Giuliani comes as his campaign has struggled to deal with the fallout from the first Republican presidential candidate debate in which he gave a halting and apparently contradictory responses to questions about his support for abortion rights. Mr. Giuliani’s aides were concerned both because it opened him up to a new round of criticism from abortion critics — who have never been happy with the prospect of a Republican presidential candidate who supports abortion rights — while threatening to undercut his image as a tough-talking iconoclast who does not equivocate on tough issues.

I haven't seen him violate his pro-life beliefs. As I recall, he voted against a stem-cell bill.

Bad tactical move.
He has no choice. Those who oppose abortion didn’t believe his ridiculous waffling, and he’s losing those who don’t care about abortion because he looks like such a wimp with all the lame excuses. If this report is true, it appears to be almost a hail-Mary pass.

True, never were, but the Planned Parenthood donation were the straw that broke the RINOs nomination bid.
“Scaring” up support is his only hope. Sadly, I’ve seen enough “post-9/11” syndrome sufferers to think it would work too. And why that movement (”RKBA, abortion, illegal immigration, liberty, etc do not matter - the only important thing is being 100% resolute on the WOT”) is so attracted to Rudy is a mystery to me.

Instead, Giuliani spent most of his public appearance defending his position on abortion in the wake of a debate last week among his Republican rivals for the nomination.
Giuliani, the leading Republican candidate in the polls, said he opposes abortion “as a matter of morality” and would advise against it. But he said he respects those who disagree and would “maintain that personal right” to choose.
“My position today is the same as it was yesterday,” Giuliani told reporters at the U.S. Space & Rocket Center.
At the debate in California last week, his position on abortion appeared at odds with all nine of his GOP rivals. Asked about the possibility of the U.S. Supreme Court’s repealing the Roe v. Wade ruling 34 years ago, Giuliani said it would be OK to repeal the law and added that it also would be OK to keep the law as is.
Since then, he has been questioned over donations - about $900 total - that he and his then-wife, Donna Hanover, gave in the 1990s to Planned Parenthood, one of the national advocates of abortion rights.
“It squares with my support of the right of choice,” he hold the Huntsville press conference. “I personally oppose it. I support a right of choice.”
When pressed, Giuliani explained: “It’s very consistent; it’s just a different view of morality.”
But would Republicans, who have traditionally nominated anti-abortion presidential candidates, support a nominee with a pro-choice history?
“That’s up to Republicans,” Giuliani said.

Will the pro-life, pro-family, pro-gun planks be removed from the GOP platform to accommodate Rudy?

I doubt it but would certainly welcome the confrontation, long overdue imo , altho here in California, where the party just ignored the planks .. and voted for a Progressive anyway.
Some might think that this new turn marks the end of the Giuliani campaign. But you must keep in mind his leadership skills, the organization he's formed, and the cult of personality that follows him. He is a force to be reckoned with and if he openly endorses abortion he intends to lead the Republican Party to adopt open support of it as well. This will never happen without a permanent division in the party.
If Giuliani had an ounce of integrity he would realize that his views are in opposition to the Party he is hoping to represent and would leave the party to run and represent another. Instead, he intends to hijack the Republican Party and twist its mission and charter to fit his own liberal, pro-death agenda.
The following words are not negotiable and any Republican candidate who does not follow the lead of the greatest President, Ronald Reagan, and the Party Platform has no business pretending to be a Republican and should go their own way. This is the line in the sand.

A Proclamation
America has given a great gift to the world, a gift that drew upon the accumulated wisdom derived from centuries of experiments in self-government, a gift that has irrevocably changed humanity's future. Our gift is twofold: the declaration, as a cardinal principle of all just law, of the God-given, unalienable rights possessed by every human being; and the example of our determination to secure those rights and to defend them against every challenge through the generations. Our declaration and defense of our rights have made us and kept us free and have sent a tide of hope and inspiration around the globe.
One of those unalienable rights, as the Declaration of Independence affirms so eloquently, is the right to life. In the 15 years since the Supreme Court's decision in Roe v. Wade, however, America's unborn have been denied their right to life. Among the tragic and unspeakable results in the past decade and a half have been the loss of life of 22 million infants before birth; the pressure and anguish of countless women and girls who are driven to abortion; and a cheapening of our respect for the human person and the sanctity of human life.
We are told that we may not interfere with abortion. We are told that we may not "impose our morality'' on those who wish to allow or participate in the taking of the life of infants before birth; yet no one calls it "imposing morality" to prohibit the taking of life after people are born. We are told as well that there exists a "right" to end the lives of unborn children; yet no one can explain how such a right can exist in stark contradiction of each person's fundamental right to life.
That right to life belongs equally to babies in the womb, babies born handicapped, and the elderly or infirm. That we have killed the unborn for 15 years does not nullify this right, nor could any number of killings ever do so. The unalienable right to life is found not only in the Declaration of Independence but also in the Constitution that every President is sworn to preserve, protect, and defend. Both the Fifth and Fourteenth Amendments guarantee that no person shall be deprived of life without due process of law.
All medical and scientific evidence increasingly affirms that children before birth share all the basic attributes of human personality -- that they in fact are persons. Modern medicine treats unborn children as patients. Yet, as the Supreme Court itself has noted, the decision in Roe v. Wade rested upon an earlier state of medical technology. The law of the land in 1988 should recognize all of the medical evidence.
Our nation cannot continue down the path of abortion, so radically at odds with our history, our heritage, and our concepts of justice. This sacred legacy, and the well-being and the future of our country, demand that protection of the innocents must be guaranteed and that the personhood of the unborn be declared and defended throughout our land. In legislation introduced at my request in the First Session of the 100th Congress, I have asked the Legislative branch to declare the "humanity of the unborn child and the compelling interest of the several states to protect the life of each person before birth." This duty to declare on so fundamental a matter falls to the Executive as well. By this Proclamation I hereby do so.
NOW, THEREFORE, I, Ronald Reagan, President of the United States of America, by virtue of the authority vested in me by the Constitution and the laws of the United States, do hereby proclaim and declare the unalienable personhood of every American, from the moment of conception until natural death, and I do proclaim, ordain, and declare that I will take care that the Constitution and laws of the United States are faithfully executed for the protection of America's unborn children. Upon this act, sincerely believed to be an act of justice, warranted by the Constitution, I invoke the considerate judgment of mankind and the gracious favor of Almighty God. I also proclaim Sunday, January 17, 1988, as National Sanctity of Human Life Day. Promoting a Culture of LifeAs a country, we must keep our pledge to the first guarantee of the Declaration of Independence.
