In the first poll of New Hampshire Republican Primary voters since the GOP debate at the Reagan Library last week, Mitt Romney, former Governor of neighboring Massachusetts, jumps into a breathtaking lead over Rudolph Giuliani and John McCain, according to a SurveyUSA poll of likely NH Republican Primary voters conducted exclusively for WBZ-TV Boston.
Romney gets 32% today, measurably better than Giuliani at 23% and McCain at 22%, who tie for 2nd place. Actor Fred Thompson, who was not included in previous SurveyUSA polling of New Hampshire GOP Primary voters, but who is included in these results, finishes 4th, at 11%.
Who is Up? Who is Down?
Compared to a NH SurveyUSA WBZ-TV poll released 1/29/07, Giuliani and McCain have each lost 10 points. The two had been tied for first, 33% then for Giuliani, 32% then for McCain.
Romney is up 11 points, from 21% then to 32% now. That's a 21-point swing to Romney among likely GOP Primary voters.
What's changed?
In January, Romney got 16% among those in favor of stem-cell research. Today Romney gets 31% among those in favor of stem-cell research. Romney's debate answer on this question -- so scholarly that moderator Chris Matthews momentarily thought Romney had mis-heard the question -- appears to have resonated. But at the same time, Romney's stem-cell answer has not cost Romney support among pro-life voters.
Romney gets 38% among pro-life voters today, 19 points higher than McCain, 22 points higher than Giuliani and 26 points higher than Thompson, who are clustered far back.
Among the 60% of NH Primary voters who say they are Conservative, Romney gets 35% today, 15 points better than McCain, 18 points better than Giuliani, 21 points better than Thompson.
Giuliani's support skews young. McCain's support skews old. Romney's support is even across all age groups.
Because SurveyUSA's questionnaire in January did not explicitly name Thompson, SurveyUSA does not here produce tracking graphs, since an exact, apples-to-apples track, is not possible. However, you may access the 1/29/07 New Hampshire data here.

I have always thought the media focused too much on Warren Jeffs in order to play a renegade Mormon off to hurt Romney. I believe the media knew he was appealing a long time ago.
It's a fact that Romney, being a Mormon, has been married fewer times than many other Republican candidates.

Are you saying all those citations are fraudulent?It is a list of cherry-picked snippets intended to make Mitt Romney appear liberal. I looked at it months ago and determined that it was misleading and stale as last week's leftovers. As an example, the very first item (abortion) is from 1994; Romney is now pro-life, and as governor he has sided with life. The more I researched that long list the more things I learned about Mitt Romney that really impressed me.

Exactly the same reason I got really interested and excited about Mitt.
I discovered that his detractors were distorting and lying about his record.

Romney is very smart, articulate, photogenic on TV, has executive experience, and is the most electable candidate.

Why do you Romney supporters keep ignoring Mitt's support for abortion and pandering to NARAL in 2002 up until his supposed pre-presidential primary 'conversion'?

Are you saying that Romney said he was going to run for President 3 years ago? I don't think so. Do you read minds?
If Romney has finally come to the pro-life side and if his record since his conversion demonstrates that, then GREAT! We want more people to realize that life should be protected. I will have to examine his record closer, but if he started his term in 2003 and he became pro-life in 2004, then it would show that he was pro-life through the MAJORITY of his term.
If we discarded every candidate who ever made the mistake of voting for or signing into law anything that was pro-abortion in nature, and we did not allow for a conversion to becoming pro-life, then we would have never elected Ronald Reagan. He signed the 1967 Therapeutic Abortion Bill as Governor of California. Shortly thereafter, he realized his mistake and became pro-life. His pro-life record after that is probably unsurpassed by any politician. I want to look at Romney's record more and hear more of what he has to say on this subject. His conversion may be genuine. He's certainly not out there right now, as Giuliani is, stating that abortion is a constitutional right and that taxpayers should continue to fund abortions. And he certainly doesn't have the egregiously pro-abortion record that Giuliani had as Mayor of NYC.

Romney started up the presidential whispers after being elected governor. Around the time of the 2004 election (just after, I think), Mitt decided to forego a reelection bid in favor of running for president (no official announcement, of course), and started visiting early primary states, calling himself pro-life, and seeking (more) headlines designed to appeal to conservatives. The "Mitt being pro-life" thing only STARTED to come out when he was going to South Carolina, an early primary state and calling himself pro-life, while still be pro-choice in Massachusetts. He had a few months period of waffling, saying his position had not changed, that he was just "personally pro-life", and supported legal abortion, then said he was "in a different place" on abortion, and wouldn't say where that place was, and now claims to be pro-life, though he's still not in favor of making abortion illegal, apparently. Again, that was all AFTER he was starting his pre-campaign for president in South Carolina.
Mitt was testing the presidential waters at LEAST as early as fall 2004, when he spoke at the GOP Convention.
So really, Spiff, get the facts.
