(AP) Police Chief William Bratton said Sunday that up to 60 members of an elite squad that swarmed into a park and fired rubber bullets during a May Day immigration rally are no longer on the street.
Bratton said he spent the weekend viewing video of the MacArthur Park incident and he said LAPD failures were widespread with officers from the top on down culpable.
"I'm not going to defend the indefensible," Bratton told journalists groups during a meeting at a television studio in Hollywood. "Things were done that shouldn't have been done."
Journalists were among those roughed up as Metropolitan Division's B Platoon moved through MacArthur and fired 148 rubber bullets to break up what had been a peaceful and lawful immigration rally.
Police said they moved in after rocks and bottles were thrown at them by 30 to 40 agitators, he said.
The Metropolitan Division is the city's premier police squad, made up of experienced officers who have extensive training in crowd control.
Bratton said up to 60 members of the Metro's B Platoon are no longer in the field. Additionally, he said, some officers will "in all likelihood" not return to the Metropolitan Division.
"Some of this will be career-impacting," Bratton said, adding that imposition of permanent discipline will await completion of the Police Department investigation.
Journalist organizations asked why officers ignored LAPD policies toward the news media worked out after reporters were assaulted during the 2000 Democratic National Convention.
A 2002 agreement called for designation of a safe spot for reporters covering news events. LAPD spokeswoman Mary Grady acknowledged reporters were not given "a designated safe spot" at MacArthur Park.
"There appears to have been here a failure to communicate," Press Photographers Association local president John McCoy said.
What "consequences" will the riot instigating, leftist, illegal aliens and their commie loving 'American comrades - face?
“Journalist organizations asked why officers ignored LAPD policies toward the news media”
BWAAAAAHAAAAAHAAAAHAAA
“a peaceful and lawful immigration rally”
NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO
It was NOT “peaceful” and it was NOT “lawful” and it was a riot, NOT a “rally”
Those illegal aliens need to hold “a peaceful and lawful immigration rally” back in Mexico and other points south....
“Most of the media spoke English and some were bilingual. No excuse for them not to follow directions”
Yeeeeeeeeees.....
How hard was it to yell “andale” to their illegal alien amigos?
“Havent heard anyone was hospitalized even overnight here”

FOR THE RECORD:
MacArthur Park melee: A photo caption on Thursday’s front page accompanying an article about the melee in MacArthur Park during an immigration rights rally stated that a Los Angeles police officer “picks up KCBS cameraman Carl Stein to move him out of the way.” Stein said that he was videotaping the rally when police knocked him down. The image showed Stein, who was on his knees, being grabbed from behind by police officers who were forcing him forward. Also, another article about the melee in Thursday’s Section A incorrectly referred to the USC Annenberg Institute for Justice in Journalism. The correct name is the USC Annenberg Institute for Justice and Journalism.

“a legitimate news event”
NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO
It was NOT a legitimate event so it was NOT a legitimate news event....
Not even a nice try to make the unlawful actions of illegal aliens into a civil rights situation...
The illegal aliens do NOT have rights under the COTUS...
HA HA
Well with today PC ways McGarrett so busted off the force LOL!
“It was NOT a legitimate. Not even a nice try to make the unlawful actions of illegal aliens into a civil rights situation...”
You’re confusing two different issues.
If tens of thousands of illegal aliens riot in LA, pelting the police with rocks and bottles of urine, that’s a legitimate news event. But saying so doesn’t entail that illegal aliens were denied their civil rights.
The word “legitimate” modifies the word “new”, not the word “event”. That’s why there’s no comma between the two of them.
I don’t know why you’re laughing at the fact the officers violated LAPD policies regarding journalists covering a news event. When a police officer is caught on tape violating his or her department’s policies, they risk reassignment, demotion, suspension without and possible termination.
Perhaps you take pleasure in knowing those officers might lose their jobs?
“They should be disciplined for not kicking enough ass.”
No. That’s anarchy.
The Rule of Law isn’t well understood on FR. Either that or many here don’t respect it.
“Imbedded journalists have caused us more trouble in Iraq than enough, now they want to cause the same trouble here.”
Gosh darn journalists, report’n on the news ‘n such.
That’s a common sentiment in many parts of the world. The fact that so many share it demonstrates how fragile our freedoms are and why we me must be vigilant to protect them against domestic enemies like, say, you for example.
Again I say it was NOT legitimate news...
“Did they ask for a safe spot? My guess is they wanted to be close to the troublemakers to encourage them.”
My guess is that you do a lot of guessing and don’t display much interest in finding out whether you’re wrong.
It’s always somewhat of a guess as to what people’s true motives are. My guess is you’re a closet liberal, but I haven’t taken the time to review your posts. A further guess is that you’re somewhat naive. What boils my blood is that there ARE real instances of genuine police violations of civil rights elsewhere but there IS NO evidence of any major injuries from anyone in this case. Dwelling on this non-event takes away the energy that should be devoted to real examples of civil rights violations.
Take for example that hussy anchorwoman telling the police they have no right to move her. Word, here, hussy: when a phalanx of police head toward you, they are there to clear the area, not debate with you.
“The first rule of crowd control police work is ‘get the guy with the video camera’! Self protection, you know.”
YES!!
AT LAST, somebody who gets it.
I appreciate your courage and honesty in pointing that police consistently and deliberately abuse their powers in order to suppress anyone acquiring video tape of their conduct, particularly in these sorts of situations.
That’s why we need to particularly vigilant about policing the police, particularly when it comes to their treatment of journalists covering a story.
