Riot police fired tear gas at stone-throwing protesters gathered in central Paris today to demonstrate against the presidential election victory of right-winger Nicolas Sarkozy, an AFP journalist said.
The clashes took place on the Place de la Bastille where about 5,000 supporters of the defeated Socialist candidate Segolene Royal had gone to await the election results.
Up to 300 rioters, some of whom were masked, made running attacks on riot police who took up positions at the entrance to boulevards leading onto the square.
Earlier a small crowd of protesters, brandishing black and red anarchist flags, set fire to an effigy of Sarkozy in the square before tearing it limb from limb and then stamping on it.

New tagline alert!
Yet, American liberals in love with France and filled with hate for America will be flocking to Paris and France this summer and early fall.
“the presidential election victory of right-winger Nicolas Sarkozy”
Could France be getting a modicum of sanity and backbone????
Give ‘em time. I can only imagine the temper tantrums the lefties will throw if Hitlery or Obama don’t win the 2008 election.
Of course. The socialist woman incompetent leftist candidate told them that it was all right to riot if she lost.
It’s obvious who are the socialist’s constituency!
the red brigades are all buggered up, spoiling for a conflict.
just goes to prove that they aren’t as loving and tolerant as they demand to be known.
I recommend that France reopens Devil’s Island and populate it with these yoots.
Royal gave them the green light to riot before the election.
Behold, the riotous Muslim majority.
France averages 80 car burnings a day during non-rioting.
Its that religion of peace call socialist again.
The left just keeps on getting crazier.
I just want to know...Can we put to rest the term “Cheese-eating surrender monkeys” or do we have to wait until after the parilamentary elections?
“Some of them are claiming the election was a fraud and that Bush/Cheney/Rove were behind it.”
LOL, well that doesn’t suprise me!
The people of France should be very happy that the rioters are not member of the winning party. Just think if people like those were in charge.
So have they broken the 1000+ mark in this latest car-burning frenzy? Last figure I saw was 700+ cars burned last night, and there was probably another big round of riotous “fun” tonight......??
Are they running out of cars?
They've been though that before, right down to the penchant for beheadings.
Down to the man, woman, and child.
According to Huffpo this signals a continuation of 16 years of conservative rule in France. One presumes the writers of Huffington Post will not consider a culture sufficiently liberalized until the political landscape resembles Khmer RougeCambodia. These guys that have the ear of the party mainstays are way left of anything we have seen before. These guys are almost a breakaway rebellion party. They hold disgruntled slackers and deluded muslims tightly to their breasts.
How can you say the policies of the early 90s as set for by Bush have not been successful. Economic and militarily, Bush has done a commendable job on both fronts. They got nothing. I mean look at Europe. Hello. This is definitely embarrassing if we decide to drink the Koolaid at precisely the time Europe starts to make amends for their liberal stupidity and arrogance.
