Riot police fired tear gas at stone-throwing protesters gathered in central Paris today to demonstrate against the presidential election victory of right-winger Nicolas Sarkozy, an AFP journalist said.
The clashes took place on the Place de la Bastille where about 5,000 supporters of the defeated Socialist candidate Segolene Royal had gone to await the election results.
Up to 300 rioters, some of whom were masked, made running attacks on riot police who took up positions at the entrance to boulevards leading onto the square.
Earlier a small crowd of protesters, brandishing black and red anarchist flags, set fire to an effigy of Sarkozy in the square before tearing it limb from limb and then stamping on it.

You know what I was talking about. You said that you wanted France to burn knowing that that would hurt innocents. The question you haven’t answered is why you want innocents to be hurt. It is one thing to watch impartially as events unfold in another part of the world. In another thing completely to root for death and destruction.

Sarkozy isn’t stupid. Just because the ‘youths’ are hiding behind their mommies doesn’t mean that he is going to ignore them. Some will decide to act like a decent Frenchman and others will get the boot. This is what he has campaigned on and I think he can deliver (pending a favorable June National assembly election).
France doesn’t have to go to war to solve their problems. They can instead slowly and deliberately eliminate the problems. Their will of course be periodic riots and strikes. But if Sarkozy doesn’t relent and minimizes the effects, the problems will be annihilated with the minimum amount of pain and destruction.
Obviously some examples of the “international community” that Democrats want us to suck up to.
Some of them do. They just don’t want “dissenters” to have them.

Pommes Frites from that ad. In Spanish they tend to use papas fritas or patatas fritas. I don’t think many people other than English speakers use the word ‘French’ fries (which is odd since they aren’t even French).
