Russia's Parliament has voted to restore the communist-era hammer and sickle to the official flag of the Russian Army.
It is expect President Vladimir Putin will ratify the move in time for next week's commemorations marking the end of World War II in Europe.
If so, Russians will again have the Soviet version of the victory banner for next week's Victory in Europe parade in Moscow.
For many Russians, especially the elderly, its symbolism is immense.
The red banner, together with the hammer, sickle and a white star, was the one raised on the Reichstag roof on May 1, 1945.
Millions of people all over the world know that photograph, but in Russia its significance is much deeper, with the Soviet victory over fascism in World War II remaining something seen in almost religious terms.

But the communists have an ally within America now...its called political correctness.
"I have seen reports of Lenin and Stalin statues returning to places they were dismantled at during the fall of the USSR."Can you share some of the sources? I recall there was some speculation to put Dzerzhinsky statue back into Lubyanka square, but that hasn't happened.
Did it ever really leave?
No surprise here.
Move along. Nothing here to see.
"Did it ever really leave?"Actually, it never did. The Victory banner (with hammer and sickle) was displayed during May 9 celebration during Yeltsin years. Only recently, there has been a debate to change the hammer and sickle to a white star on red background. They decided not to change it. See my comment #69.
Old Commies never go away
they just wait to rise another day
Then I will go back to my speculation that Putin isn’t Soviet, Gorbechev is.
Part of their heritage, doncha know.
Shocking hell. Russia has started reverting back to Soviet communism the day ole KGB man Putin went into office.
You need to add the dimocrat mule to that flag.
"If they are not re-adopting the Soviet symbol, Im thrilled. Then I will go back to my speculation that Putin isnt Soviet, Gorbechev is."Like I said and by the sources I quoted in comment #69, the only issue with the use of symbol was its presense on the Victory Banner, which is used during VE day celebration in Russia. Not the same as the flag used officially by active Russian armed forces today. The original article which started the thread confused the issue because the it would apparently lead to believe that the symbol was being adopted for official use by the Russian army today.
More to the point - that particular use of the symbol never really went away, it has been used in VE day celebration (during parades of the “historic” units) even during Yeltsin days. So even for this purpose it is not really being “brought back”, only codified into law.
We all knew this was coming(russia, china, iran alliance). Paranoid disgusting communist/fascists. We need to stay sharp and frosty and deter them at every chance.
That’s correct, and that’s where things are headed. 4th Reich = The Shanghai Cooperation Org - the multiheaded hydra, with two dominent ones being Russia and China.
That is an awesome graphic.
The second coming....
No surprise. Lets welcome back the cold war. I guess its round II?

“Like it or not, it was the Soviet army that stormed Berlin and it was a Soviet banner that flew over Reichstag. Not an American, British “
I don’t like it - Patton could have taken Berlin and Moscow were it not for communists in the US govt.
And these communists are guilty for the 60,000,000 that their tovarish in the Kremlin killed after the war.
