Russia's Parliament has voted to restore the communist-era hammer and sickle to the official flag of the Russian Army.
It is expect President Vladimir Putin will ratify the move in time for next week's commemorations marking the end of World War II in Europe.
If so, Russians will again have the Soviet version of the victory banner for next week's Victory in Europe parade in Moscow.
For many Russians, especially the elderly, its symbolism is immense.
The red banner, together with the hammer, sickle and a white star, was the one raised on the Reichstag roof on May 1, 1945.
Millions of people all over the world know that photograph, but in Russia its significance is much deeper, with the Soviet victory over fascism in World War II remaining something seen in almost religious terms.

Most of the people in Eastern Europe understand the full meaning of both signs...
Try walking with any of those emblems on, in my town, and you’ll get your a** kicked here and there...
...and everywhere :)
People in my part of the world treat this kind of things probably much more seriously then Americans. You guys (and ladies) are pretty safe in your huge City Upon The Hill, we have commies as nieighbours...
Well, we’ve beat the shit out of them, alone, in 1920... we’ll do this again I guess:P

I will say this about Dr Seuss, he was one of the few leftists in this country at the time, who saw through the Nazi-Soviet charade of the Non-Agression Pact.

Baloney. we have commies within.
The commies were sure to instill their leadership in everyone of our countries.
That is why it is a War on Terror and not a war on a country.
What???!!!
I also knew you would be in for it.
Thanks for those pics
Thanks. I realized that afterwards.
I usually exercise more patience and restraint when responding to those who can't follow my line of thought, but atypically, I just was not in a good mood yesterday.
"Senators discussed the bill for the first time in mid-April. The majority of senators then opposed the bill passed by the State Duma, which provided that a copy of the flag raised atop the Reichstag in Berlin on May 1, 1945 have a five-pointed white star on a red field without the hammer and sickle."All this is about, is whether or not to revise what the appearance of the official WWII Victory Banner should be. The Russians have voted to keep the original hammer and sickle as WWII Victory Banner. Big deal!
"The present version of the law was adopted by the State Duma on April 25. It was drawn up by the conciliatory commission. The first versions of the law, which introduced the notion of the symbol of the Victory Banner, was rejected first by the Federation Council and then by the President, because the symbol of the Victory Banner differed from the banner, which had been hoisted by Soviet Army soldiers over the Reichstag."Like it or not, it was the Soviet army that stormed Berlin and it was a Soviet banner that flew over Reichstag. Not an American, British or Russian tricolor. That was all a part of history. To claim otherwise would be pure Orwellian revisionism, something like rewriting the textbooks that it was a UN banner, not the Stars and Stripes that flew over Gettysburg.
Thank you for the ping JadeEmperor.
They were never dead to begin with. All smoke and mirrors.
Not suprising, considering that the glory days of the red army ended in 1945. Not unlike the brits, many of whom still claim they won WW2 without help.
Maybe Thompson understands PR, because W sure doesn't and when a PR vacuum exists Communists will be sure to fill it.
history repeats itself. (somebody dun forgot sumthin’...maybe the piles of bodies produced by the soviets?)
to be added or removed from this list, please FReepmail me!!!
It seems that in Russia, they are trying to restore a lot of the Soviet symbology. I have seen reports of Lenin and Stalin statues returning to places they were dismantled at during the fall of the USSR.
Putin is proud to stand next to the symbol of satanic tyranny he served faithfully all his life as a loyal Chekist thug.
Hopefully the younger generation can overcome this. It’s really a disgrace to want to get back into that tyranical mold. It’s a bit as if post WW2 Germans got back into the Nazi stuff.
Yelstin should’ve banned the symbols entirely I guess. They can’t handle it.
The thing is that many young Russians (who came of age after the collapse) are big into the Stalinist bit.
