Communist symbol returns to Russian Army's flag

Russia's Parliament has voted to restore the communist-era hammer and sickle to the official flag of the Russian Army.

It is expect President Vladimir Putin will ratify the move in time for next week's commemorations marking the end of World War II in Europe.

If so, Russians will again have the Soviet version of the victory banner for next week's Victory in Europe parade in Moscow.

For many Russians, especially the elderly, its symbolism is immense.

The red banner, together with the hammer, sickle and a white star, was the one raised on the Reichstag roof on May 1, 1945.

Millions of people all over the world know that photograph, but in Russia its significance is much deeper, with the Soviet victory over fascism in World War II remaining something seen in almost religious terms.

"National sacrifice"???? That's a stretch!

Next, some Nazi sympathizer is going to want to fly their flag and honor their "heritage" as well.

Blackveil,

Good evening.

Maybe you can help me out with something ...

I've started dating a woman who's a political conservative, absolutely beautiful, with an artistic, creative and wonderful heart and soul.

I'm absolutely amazed by her ... She's basically a brunette version of Ann Coulter ... an absolute miracle.

I was startled however, by her (curious) desire to "escape" the United States ... with it's (allegedly) super-high taxes, moral dengeracy, massive illegal immigration problems .... ect, etc, etc.

She (aged 51) seems to think that moving to Austrailia or New Zealand ... building an internet business, and then (happily) retiring until she's 75-80 ... is a very posperous and viable possibility.

I'm pretty keen on international news and events ... a Free Republic member since 1996 ... I read the Economist ... and all that nonsense.

Frankly, I'm really concerned over her plans for an international relocation, even to Austrailia ... especially since she has NEVER even been there, nor does she have "ANY" family or even friends (distant or otherwise) living there.

On the other hand, I may be completely wrong in my assessment.

Can you give me the "straight scoop" on this issue, as a conservative citizen of the "great" nation of Austrailia ?

The “meaning” of that sign is Jews have power while Russians suffer.

Limonov isn’t Russian. He’s Ukrainian. And those ultranationalists were created by the KGB between the first and second coups.

While Khrushchev and Brezhnev were both from Ukraine, both were ethnic Russians.==

It is not true.

"Accually those estimates was one in 1992 in the book of general Krivoshein. Estimates put at more than 25 million the total number of Soviet civilian and military war dead.== Accually as far as I red same article Kirilinhe said that total soviet losses amount is about 11 mlns. Accually it is decrease not increase."

One has to wonder how many of these revised Russian/Soviet war dead numbers - did not die in action fighting Axis forces - but were in fact machine gunned down by the NKVD (the terror tool of Communist party) if they were either 'too slow' in attacking King Tiger tanks for example, or were not willing to be used in suicidal Red Army human wave attacks against superior fire power.

When it comes to believing anything coming out of the Kremlin - forget-about-it ....

So 19 million Soviets dead repelling Nazi invaders isn't a national sacrifice? What would you call it?

A total cluster drill?
The Soviets helped the Nazis arm, partitioned Poland with ‘em, and then were surprised when the Nazis stabbed ‘em in the back (even before Stalin could get around to stabbing them in the back!). I ain’t gonna mourn even one of them.
Without the Ribbentrop-Molotov pact WWII might not have happened. Certainly it would have been very different...

Ah, so you’re a believer in collective guilt. Stalin makes an evil deal, therefore 11 million or 19 million or 25 million common people got it coming. Got it. Would you be happier if the last Russian had killed the last German, or the other way around?

They are commies....I'd call it a good start. Not at all comparable to the sacrifices of our soldiers.

FDR should have let the Nazis and Commies kill each other off then dropped a "Little boy" on Moscow once the Nazis had taken over.

No Korean War, Berlin Wall, no Vietnam....I can think of many good reasons to have let the USSR fall and eliminate to enemies of the USA at once.

Yes, it is true RusIvan. Khrushchev had a Ukrainian somewhere in his family, because "khrushch" is a distinctly Ukrainian word. But he considered himself Russian and had Russians in his family as well.

This is not unusual; Tchaikovsky considered himself Russian, though "tchaika" is also a Ukrainian word, and his grandfather was a Ukrainian Cossack.

If you read a lot of history, you will note Ukrainian influences in Russian history for centuries. This was particularly pronounced in the 18th century. I won't bother discussing German or French influences.

The bottom line is within the Russian Empire, there was a lot of mixture.

Stalin was the only one surprised. Military intelligence from a Soviet spy in China or Japan (can't recall offhand which) was sent back laying out the whole plan of Operation Barbarossa, including the date of invasion.

Stalin chose to ignore it.

If you have this line of thought, though, presumably you don't believe the invasion of Iraq should have happened.

And that's the bottom line.

"FDR should have let the Nazis and Commies kill each other off then dropped a "Little boy" on Moscow once the Nazis had taken over."

That's right. Churchill never trusted the Russians and knew they would gobble up huge chunks of Eastern Europe and ALL of Europe if not stopped. Patton had the right idea, after we defeated one evil system would should have defeated the other.

In today's Neo-Soviet Empire it is rather difficult to locate Russians willing to admit in 1939 Moscow and Berlin came to a mutual non-aggression agreement with their each others 'arch enemies'.

In the cozy agreement between the two brutal totalitarian régimes it contained a secret protocol that gave Latvia, Lithuania, Estonia, and eastern Poland to the Moscow and gave western Poland to Berlin, in effect wiping Poland as an independent nation - off the map.

Stalin's order for the KATYN FOREST MASSACRE

Top Secret

5 March 1940

USSR People's Commissariat for Internal Affairs

Moscow

To Comrade Stalin

A large number of former officers of the Polish Army, employees of the Polish Police and intelligence services, members of Polish nationalist, counter-revolutionary parties, members of exposed counter-revolutionary resistance groups, escapees and others, all of them sworn enemies of Soviet authority full of hatred for the Soviet system, are currently being held in prisoner-of-war camps of the USSR NKVD and in prisons in the western provinces of Ukraine and Belarus.

The military and police officers in the camps are attempting to continue their counter-revolutionary activities and are carrying out anti-Soviet agitation. Each of them is waiting only for his release in order to start actively struggling against Soviet authority.

The organs of the NKVD in the western provinces of the Ukraine and Belarus have uncovered a number of counter-revolutionary rebel organisations.

Former officers of the Polish Army and police as well as gendarmes have played an active role in all of these organisations.

Amongst the detained escapees and violators of the state borders a considerable number of people have been identified as belonging to counter-revolutionary espionage and resistance organisations.

14,736 former officers, government officials, landowners, police, gendarmes, prison guards, settlers in the border regions and intelligence officers [more than 97% are Poles] are being held in prisoner-of-war camps. This number includes soldiers and junior officers.

Included are:

generals, colonels and lieutenant colonels- 295
majors and captains- 2080
lieutenants, second lieutenants and ensigns- 6049
officers and juniors of the police, gendarmes, prison guards and intelligence officers- 1030
rank and file police officers, gendarmes, prison guards and intelligence personnel- 5138
government officials, land owners, priests, settlers in border regions- 144
18,632 detained people are being kept in the western region of the Ukraine and Belarus
[10,685 are Poles]

They include:

former officers- 1207
former intelligence officers of the police and gendarmerie 5141
spies and saboteurs- 347
former land owners, factory owners and government officials- 465
members of various counter-revolutionary and resistance organisations and other counter-revolutionary elements- 5345
escapees- 6127

In view of the fact that all are hardened and uncompromising enemies of Soviet authority, the USSR NKVD considers it necessary:

[1] To instruct the USSR NKVD that it should try before special tribunals:

[a] the cases of the 14,700 former Polish officers, government officials,land owners, police officers, intelligence officers, gendarmes, settlers in the border regions and prison guards being held in prisoner-of-war camps;

[b] together with the cases of 11,000 members of various counter-revolutionary organisations of spies and saboteurs, former land owners, factory owners, former Polish officers, government officials, and escapees who have been arrested and are being held in the western provinces of the Ukraine and Belarus and apply to them the supreme penalty: shooting.

[2] Examination of the cases is to be carried out without summoning those detained and without bringing charges, the statements concerning the conclusion of the investigation and the final verdict should be as follows:

[a] for persons being held in prisoner-of-war camps, in the form of certificates issued by the NKVD of the USSR NKVD;

[b] for arrested personnel in the form of certificates issued by the NKVD of the Ukrainian SSR and the NKVD of the Belarus SSR.

[3] The cases should be examined and the verdict pronounced by a three person tribunal consisting of comrades Merkulov, Kobulov and Bashtakov.

People's Commissar for the Internal Affairs of the USSR

“My ire was directed towards the arrogance exhibited by spanalot of the typical “oh, we could’ve just marched on to Moscow”.”

No- Patton would have taken the other two nukes and obliterated Moscow.

This would have saved 60,000,000 lives after the war.

I believe that most Americans would have been appalled at having to kill 10-25 million Russians in WWII Part-B ... simply because the Soviets hadn’t (really) done anything (bad) to the United States.

“The “Cold War” and Nuclear-ICBM race were ten years in the future.
Did the Soviet leadership (read the entire Communist Party) deserve to be roasted like pigs for Lenin and Stalin’s genocidal purges of MILLIONS of innocent Russians ? “

Your moniker is ironic considering your loyalty to the Kremlin line.

The russian scum in the Kremlin killed 90000000 nonrussians in the last century - what part of that do you not understand

“Russian Empire”

An empire employs some level of legitamacy. The kremlin has always resorted to genocide to keep its neighbors in submission.

That thankfully has ended.
