Republican Presidential Candidate Debate #1 – Reagan Library 05/03/07 - Official Discussion Thread
The debate will take place at the Ronald Reagan Presidential Library in Simi Valley, California, and will air live on MSNBC from 8:00 to 9:30 pm (ET) and stream live on MSNBC.com and politico.com and will include audience questions gathered on politico.com.

Hunter most clearly did. Also said he would like Nancy Reagan to learn more about adult stem cell research.

Smart enough? I'm asking what is he afraid of? Either get in or get out. What we don't need is someone who can't make up his mind or prove himself as the other candidates are willing to do. Same for Newt.
Really? I’m not discounting you, I was just wondering if you had a link to some of his pro-abortion actions since he claimed to be pro-life.
Quick Analysisi: Undecided leaning Fred Thompson is my bias.
1)The media take is nothing changed with the 3 leaders (I disagree)
2)The media take is of the “other” challengers, nobody set themselves apart (I agree)
1)McCain looked old, tentative and grasping for the language he has used in the Sentate for along time (I think he hurt himself the most because his age can’t be changed)
2)Giuliani was fair but very defensive on his liberal positions on abortion and stem cell...(No major gaffes but I think he hurt himself moderately with the issues that will drag on him throughout a GOP Primary, abortion)
3) The winner, was Mitt Romney. (He looked Presidential and was confident in his answers. He appeared aggresive on fighting WOT...and he seemed genuine and hammered his pro family theme. )
*The “others” were undistinguised. Some had good answers but none really stood out. They can’t play it safe like the top 3, they need to be aggressive and get recognized. Of the “others” I think Huckabee,Gilmore did the best and Duncan Hunter did OK...They all need to be more telegenic and get noticed...Just my opinion...Kind of neutral since I’m undecided but leaning Fred Thompson.

I like Mitt, but I’m keeping my tagline.
I also thought Duncan Hunter did well.
McCain is a political friend, not just a friend, of Fred Thompson. McCain and Thompson (and Lindsey Graham) have found themselves to have an affinity for one another, in Congress. They have a long and storied history of being political comrades.
I think Gilmore and Duncan came away looking presidential. I was impressed with Mitt but as so many people have said - he looks too polished. I didn’t think that was possible but in this case I felt like I was buying a new sedan. McCain was scripted, but probably won the soundbite contest on MSNBC with his 4 year disaster thing. Well calculated. Ron Paul was out there in space tying everything to the war - guess I didn’t take him seriously but he has some good ideas. Love Tommy T, reminds me a little of Grandpa Munster - always loved him from his days in Wisconsin. Huckabee had some good ideas (first one to bring up fair tax I think), Brownback ok, Tancredo ok, and Guiliani was the most disappointing like he was when I saw him in person in Richmond.
Tell us: how do your accomplishments compare with "Romney the Phony's"?
Hmmm - I thought it was Guiliani who said that he was personally prolife but not as Mayor.....which I knew already. But I was typing and reading so fast, I missed a lot that was said. Will be watching the rerun at 11 PM (so I can throw something at Chrissy Matthews - again).
I agree. I'm one of those who likes to see a full, open, honest vetting on all issues. No subterfuge.

As long as he changes toward the better, then it is good.
Sadly, as much as I like Duncan Hunter and Tom Tancredo, Ron Paul seems to be the only one that was on that stage that seems to understand the Constitutional limits of the federal government. The others just talked about state's rights when they didn't really want to commit to a particular stance on an issue. Of course, I seriously doubt that Congressman Paul stands a chance of actually getting elected but, he and Congressman Tancredo, by staying in this race for a while, will, at least, get some folks and candidates thinking about their issues (Consitution and Immigration) -- two things that were sorely lacking in the last round of presidental debates.
