Philadelphia, PA (LifeNews.com) -- The Philadelphia Inquirer newspaper is coming under fire for a cartoon it ran following the Supreme Court's decision to uphold the federal partial-birth abortion ban. The cartoon entitled Church and State features the five Catholic members of the high court wearing bishop miters.
Joseph Cella, the head of Fidelis, a leading Catholic pro-life group, says the newspaper, "has breached the line of reasonable editorial commentary. This cartoon is venomous, terribly misleading and, blatantly anti-Catholic."
"We call on the Inquirer to repudiate the cartoons anti-Catholic sentiment," Cella told LifeNews.com in a statement.
Cella says the cartoon suggests that the Supreme Court decision to uphold the ban on partial birth abortion was a result of the Catholic Church influencing the votes of the five Catholic Justices on the Supreme Court, who are portrayed as Catholic Bishops.
"The Supreme Court did not follow marching orders from the Vatican or the Bishops in the United States. Instead, the Court deferred to deliberative judgment of the people's elected representatives protected by the Constitution, Cella said.
By exposing this outrageously intolerant cartoon, we hope to contain future attacks on judges of faith, particularly during any future confirmation hearings which will likely prove to be the most contentious in history," he added.
Cella said the Inquirer's cartoon resembles the attack on Judge Bill Pryor, who was mocked for having deeply-held religious beliefs as a Catholic. Pryor faced sharply abusive rhetoric before he was finally confirmed to the federal bench in 2003.
"The Inquirers insinuation that a Catholic judge cannot act dispassionately and apply the law is an affront to all judges of faith, and smacks of anti-Catholic bigotry and elitism of the worst kind," he concluded.
No newspaper would ever dare depict the Supremes as Jewish Rabbis nor as Muslim Imams, yet they can get away with the Catholic Bishop look.
“No newspaper would ever dare depict the Supremes as Jewish Rabbis nor as Muslim Imams”
Neither would be correct, frankly, but I get your point.
It was my experience that the Left will use any racial, religious hatred or social bigotry to the fullest when it suits “the common good”.

If what I just wrote made you sad or angry,
it was probably just a joke.
When one runs out of things to say, the next step is to just pick an easy target. I mean, really, they couldn’t attack any substance of the actual ruling because PBA is so repulsive. It’s lazy and very revealing of a the intellectual abyss that liberals wallow in.
Isiah 5:20 Doom to you who call evil good and good evil, Who put darkness in place of light and light in place of darkness, Who substitute bitter for sweet and sweet for bitter! 21 Doom to you who think you're so smart, who hold such a high opinion of yourselves! 22 All you're good at is drinking - champion boozers who collect trophies from drinking bouts 23 And then line your pockets with bribes from the guilty while you violate the rights of the innocent. (from The Message Bible)
If the left so desperately wanted to keep the church out of the state and out of the SCOTUS, then they would have to ban people of ALL faiths (Jews, Muslims, Buddhists, etc) and all Christian denominations from becoming justices.
That would leave Athiests as the only people qualified.
Liberals are Stupid.
Using this logic, it would be just as valid to paint devil horns on the other 4 justices.
The liberal media must be taught that their advertising revenue is in jeopardy if they choose to diss religious and political conservatives.
Good one!!!!!
Utterly disgusting. So are roving mobs of Catholic “youths” going to go out and riot now?
But seriously.... That supporters of PBA are so void of souls that they do not take into consideration the fact that full term babies get scissors stuck into the back of their heads is frightening to me. And that these people have high positions in government should make us all fear for the future.
Seems to me to get things right when it comes to life matters we need three more Roman Catholics on the Supreme Court.
Isaih 5:20 - Strong words and correct.
Anti-Catholicism, the last “safe” bigotry in America.
The Inquirer was a paper I read from the ‘40’s till the ‘60’s when I moved to Ca. The Bulletin was my fave. But, both papers were decidedly liberal and only The Daily News there has any opposite opeders in debate. Odd that there are so many Roman Catholics in Pa. and Philly and yet the paper gets away with this bias. When will these dummies understand that Dems run the paper, the city and the state and they are the ones who are behind this bias???
