BRUSSELS (Reuters) - Conservative Nicolas Sarkozy and Socialist Segolene Royal are set to contest a French presidential run-off after topping the first-round poll on Sunday, Belgium's Belga news agency said.

Belga quoted first projections which cannot be published in France by law until the last polling stations close at 1800 GMT (7 p.m. British time) as showing Sarkozy and Royal would go through.

Belgium's RTBF radio station said Sarkozy was slightly ahead in the first round.

The French you call “democrats” are at least honest enough to call themselves what they are, Socialists.

The left in France is much more extreme than the left in America though...most US Democrats would fit well in the Bayrou camp...

Keen observation.

Although le Pen is rumored to be coming out for Royal in the runoff. He will announce his choice on May 1.

Endorsing a Socialist? I don’t get it.

Well, unfortunately, I think Bush would invoke Turkey into the new North American Alliance or whatever he’s forming if it were next door.

The fact of the matter is that Royal said she couldn’t even see herself shaking George Bush’s hand. There’s no question who the most pro-American French candidate in this race is.

They all hate Sarko. The whole next two weeks is going to be “ABS” Anyone But Sarko, and “Sarko-Fasho”

The Left stands for nothing. They are just against Sarko. They have no real program and they will try to win by fear.

Now that they don’t have le Pen to hate anymore, I don’t think the same tactics will work against Sarko.

Le Pen is, and has always been, primarly about Le Pen...

He just got spanked by someone who repackaged part of his message and he wants to get his reward (probably by demanding cabinet posts for some of his key people for endorsing Sarkozy).

The left is pushing so hard and screaming so loud, they don't notice who they are alienating.

Hopefully, Damascus Nancy and the rest of the Donks will continue to emulate the Eurotrash on this side of the pond.

The French you call “democrats” are at least honest enough to call themselves what they are, Socialists.

Democrats, socialists - - same thing. But you do make a good point that French Democrats are apparently more honest than their American counterparts. Ask any American Democrat if he is a socialist and he will likely lie that he is not.

Regards,
LH

I think in France every citizen is eligible to vote.

There must be a minimum age, I would think.

I wish I could share your optimsim Jason C, but I know leftists very well, they cling to power the way a vampire clings to a fresh neck.

France needs a house cleaning, not from a US perspective but from a goodwill towards France perspective. I would not like to see them slip below the waves of obscurity due to socialism.

Seconding others, I want to thank you for the posts re: this election! :)

My personal Frenchie friend voted de Villiers, but says he will go Sarkozy in the next round (anyone but Royale!). . .

Honestly, ANY turn right is a right turn, it seems. . .

Baby steps, baby steps, baby steps. . .

Again, merci for the information (my French is not so good!:)

Although he met with Bush, Sarko is also distancing himself from the US. Regardless, the French bilateral relationship is not a major issue in the campaign. The nature of the French participation in the EU is a much bigger issue.

Sego is also attacking Sarko about his “Frenchness” and the socialists are trying to scare the people about what Sarko would do to the social welfare system. It sounds like the Dem playbook.

Is there a breakdown of votes by region?

france2.fr has an interactive map.

Paris is probably the most pro-Royal, followed by the mid-sized cities.

Actually, Paris was 35% Sarko, 32% Royal.

North and East of France prefers Sarko, South and West of France Royal. Some "departments" (provinces?) near France-Spain border had Royal first and Sarko third (behind Bayrou) and near German and Swiss borders it was opposite (Sarko first, Royal third).

There doesn't seem to be a difference between cities and countryside, except that minor candidates (other than Sarko, Royal, Bayrou) have much worse numbers in bigger cities.
