A survivor of the Virginia Tech massacre has been describing how a colleague died to protect others. Although badly injured, graduate student Waleed Shalaan distracted gunman Cho Seung-Hui to save another person from his bullets.
Waleed saved another student's life.The surviving student, who wishes to remain anonymous, told of Waleed's heroics through an email to his supervisor.
He describes how he was left uninjured after Cho's initial round of shots.
Meanwhile, Waleed had been wounded but was still alive.
However, when Cho later returned to the classroom to inspect for signs of life among his victims, the surviving student struggled to remain calm.
He believes he would have been shot dead were it not for Waleed's "protective movement" that distracted the gunman.
Cho turned and shot Waleed for a second time, killing him, before leaving the classroom.
Randy Dymond, a civil engineering professor, has said the student asked to him to tell the tale "so that the family of Waleed understands the sacrifice."
Shaalan's mother broke down when she heard Mr Dymond's account.
"He was trying to save someone else," she said repeatedly.
Dymond said Shaalan's body was taken to a Blacksburg mosque so classmates, teachers and friends could say goodbye before he was sent to Egypt for burial.'

Anonymous knew what Waleed was thinking.
The fact that someone is a Muslim doesn’t preclude him from being a hero.
Here’s the *real problem* (not to say anything about the stories internal inconsistencies) —
Dymond declined to give the name of the student who survived, but said the student wanted him to tell the story “so that the family of Waleed understands the sacrifice.”

Essentially this is a Dan Rather type of story, where the document is fake, but the story is true.
And also, it’s like that reporter, who just made up “composite individuals” in his stories, because although a “real individual” did not exist — he could use a “literary individual” to *illustrate* his points. However, he did not say it was a “made up person” — he indicated the person was real.
What was his justification? Simply because part was true for Individual 1, and part was true for Individual 2, and another part was true for Individual 3 — therefore, I can combine all three individual’s bits and pieces and illustrate a “truth” to the public.
This sounds like a “literary device” — in constructing a make-believe student, who can’t answer questions, can’t be contacted, can’t be known — for the *express purpose* of relating a “truth” to the public.
What would that “truth” be? Well..., of course..., it would be that if a Jew can save some lives, then a Muslim can too — and the public should know this...

Except for the fact that it never happened, in this story...
I’m pretty sure they were Muslim. The Grand Mufti hadn’t killed all his resistance yet.
However, as there were only two survivors from that
classroom who were uninjured, Dymond takes a huge
risk of being exposed, if all of this is invented.
Dymond may be the one artificially inserting himself
into this to feel more connected to the event.
Or... Dymond may be telling the truth.
We can’t know until someone speaks to Hixon and
Krause.

I am not anonymous, and I am truthful. I have given my identity and address in postings -- years ago -- on this forum, as a matter of fact. There is no reason for me do so again, and there are many reasons not to do so.
I would prefer if those know my particulars to keep them private.
If -- if I was in the circumstance of one of those four students already named, already and currently publicly identified ... there then would be no reason to maintain my anonymity, and a very positive reason -- that is to vouchsafe this tale, to sign it, to validate it. That validation since it is an obvious way to honestly comfort the afflicted -- is the right and caring thing to do.

You would initially think so. Now, those student are *his students* right? It makes me think about grades.
By the way, I think I read that Krause was leaving the university right away. That might be relevant. If someone leaves, they’re not around to be asked questions and one might not be able to find them. I think it was the father (of Krause) who said he was leaving. Additionally, I think I also read that Krause was questioned by a reporter and he didn’t want to talk.
And also, keep in mind, that reporter who made up his stories, it was *so blatant* that it was mind-boggling that he could get away with it. He was getting away with it because it was so blatant. And he did it for a very long time, story after story after story. If that’s true for a big newspaper, just think what could happen with a little story like this (when everyone want to “cooperate” with you to show that Muslims can do the same thing). No one wants to ask the questions.

Randel Dymond is head of the Civil Engineering Department. All four survivors are in his department.
Something’s going on with Krause for sure. He’s a graduate student, almost finished. Why would he leave?

What I read (can’t remember exactly where) is that it was his dad saying that. That’s how it was presented in the article.
We know the student, Waleed, had two children and a wife. We also know that the way to true comfort is in memorializing the life and not the death. Not by the fleeting last seconds at death do we honor a person — but by the good, the joy and the light a person activates or helps activate during a lifetime in the world.

Did you happen to check on if Dymond was supposed to be in the building that day ? Any Cho-Dymond connection ?

Mr. Krause’s father sent an e-mail message to Mr. Knocke Tuesday, saying his son planned to withdraw from the master’s program. Mr. Loganathan was his graduate adviser. Mr. Krause came to Patton Hall on Tuesday afternoon to take a break in one of its empty classrooms. He told a reporter he wasn’t interested in talking about the shootings.
