First wheat gluten, then rice protein and now it's corn gluten.

The melamine contamination is being discovered worldwide and it all traces back to Chinese imports.

Thanks to howl911.com for the information, and who adds

This finding—melamine in corn gluten—should seal the theory that melamine was added to wheat gluten and rice protein concentrate deliberately .... With this news, Howl 911 believes all pet foods containing additives of any kind from China should be tested for melamine and other contaminates.

This finding also vindicates the claims of many pet parents whose pets were sickened or killed as a result of eating non-Menu Foods brands which did not contain wheat gluten. Virtually all pet foods and many treats contain protein additives in the form of gluten (wheat, corn) or from other grain or vegetable sources (rice, soy, whey), and many of these additives are products of China.

I am sorry to say, but this newest information—combined with the lack of full disclosure from pet food companies as to where they source their raw materials from— renders ALL commercial pet food suspect.

I am now!

Out two cats are spoiled brats.

The male was diagnosed with kidney dysfunction. He was eating the canned stuff made by Menu Foods and sold by Aldi’s. Interesting that the female stopped eating canned food three weeks before the first canned food recall.

Spent $500.00 on vet bills for the male cat already. Very stressful that we have to give him IV’s.

Is you kitty improving?

I know how distressing this is. I lost a Lab to renal failure and liver failure a few years ago.

I’m still heart broken.

Thu, 19 Apr 2007
Pet owners will be compensated for animals which died from eating contaminated pet food, Royal Canin Petfood manufacturers said on Thursday.

This followed the death of 30 animals to date after a batch of the company’s pet food was found to be contaminated with a substance called melamine

Our vet recommended cooked rice and cottage cheese for two of our older dogs that had suddenly developed digestive problems and become lethargic. We bought a rice cooker to help make the rice. The dogs really like this combination and are now full of energy.

For the full details, go to:
http://www.itchmo.com/read/melamine-in-corn-gluten-linked-to-south-african-illnesses_20070419

This has been a difficult decision as corn gluten contamination has not hit North America. But based on patterns of development and expansion of recall in the US, Itchmo is issuing a warning to pet parents out of abundance of caution.

We stress that NO US OR CANADIAN CONNECTION HAS BEEN REPORTED.

BREAKING NEWS: Melamine in Corn Gluten Linked to South African Pet Illnesses
April 19th, 2007

The 29 cases of renal failure in South Africa has been linked to melamine in corn gluten used in pet food. Corn gluten is used extensively in the US.

Tests have confirmed that Vets Choice and Royal Canin dog and cat dry pet-food products contained corn gluten contaminated with melamine, says the manufacturer.

The contaminated corn gluten was delivered to Royal Canin by a South African third-party supplier and appears to have originated from China.

We were tracking cases of the South African pet deaths before and have heard rumors of corn gluten contamination.

At this point, we believe that all corn gluten should be considered at risk for contamination and should be tested by every pet food manufacturer and the FDA.

This contamination “event” is spiraling out of control.

The inadequacies of the FDA and the intransigence of China has all pets and consumers at serious risk right now.

We are an inch away from this being discovered in the human food chain. Then what? Ooops?

I have an affected pet and I have been carrying this banner along with many other -great- Freepers for the last four weeks.

I am getting very tired of all this but I will continue to do what I can to get the news out.

Let me thank everyone at Free Republic for their consideration and for the opportunity to get this news out.

God Bless!

I would like to know how the melamine got into the gluten in the first place. But of course we’ll never know the real story.

Meanwhile, my dog is eating what I eat: chicken, fish, beef, pork, etc. Is it expensive? Yes, I suppose so. So are vet bills. So is a new dog.

Damned Reds. All those wonderful kitties and puppies on the other side of the Rainbow Bridge now, because of them.

Best guess right now is that melamine is added to increase the -apparent- protien level of pet food additives supplied by China.

Higher Protien = Higher Price

I can’t post the new developments today, fast enough.

The dam is about to burst.

“Update from Christie: Carrie Peyton Dahlberg of the Sacramento Bee is still working on a story, but she posted this little teaser on the Bee website just now:

The chemical linked to cat and dog deaths on two continents has made it into pig feed, federal officials said Thursday, although it wasn’t immediately clear whether any pigs that ate the melamine were later eaten by people.”

Somebody should tell the Chinese:

The chemical, used to make plastics, is allowed as a fertilizer in Asia. The ingredients at the center of the recall — wheat gluten and now rice protein concentrate — were both imported from China.

Perhaps melamine “grows” into the grains.
