The chemical, melamine, is believed to have contaminated rice protein concentrate used to make a variety of Natural Balance Pet Foods products for both dogs and cats, the Food and Drug Administration said Wednesday.
Previously, the chemical was found to contaminate wheat gluten used by at least six other pet food and treat manufacturers.
Both ingredients were imported from China, though by different companies and from different manufacturers.
A lawmaker said Wednesday the Chinese have refused to grant visas to FDA inspectors seeking to visit the plants where the ingredients were made. An FDA spokesman later said the visas were not refused but that the agency had not received the necessary invitation letter to get visas.
"It troubles me greatly the Chinese are making it more difficult to understand what led to this pet food crisis," Sen. Dick Durbin, D-Ill., told The Associated Press after meeting with the FDA commissioner, Dr. Andrew von Eschenbach.
A message left Wednesday with the Chinese Embassy in Washington was not immediately returned.

My best advice - don't buy pet food made in China!
I hate to say it but I agree with Dick Durbin.
The problem pet foods were made in the US and Canada, but used ingredients from China. So not buying Chinese pet food won’t help.
“...the Chinese have refused to grant visas to FDA inspectors seeking to visit the plants where the ingredients were made”
Something to keep in mind before buying any food stuffs from China. They cannot be trusted to produce safe products if they won’t even allow our inspectors in to see their pet food companies.
Our groomer little Yorkie died from one of the contaminated foods two weeks ago.
Okay - got ya!
I misunderstood.
Poisoned dog food today, poisoned egg foo yung tomorrow. Must be a commie plot.
Heck, they don’t care - they just want the $$$.
Meanwhile us pet lovers, sweat it out and scramble to find stuff that isn’t on the recall list.
thats all very nice
but where do you think human food comes from
“Our groomer little Yorkie died from one of the contaminated foods two weeks ago.”
I am so sorry.
I would be very sad and ANGRY at the company that made the food. You have my sincerest sympathy. I LOVE animals. I am very sorry.

I use Pro Plan for adult dogs. So far no recall.
Nothing at all that ever goes in food - any food - should ever again be imported from China.
I don’t buy human food from China!
That I can assure you! Fresh veggie, fruit, meat - not from China.
Wasn’t mine, was our groomers, but she was the sweetest little dog, only three years old. We were just there yesterday to have our cockers groomed and it seemed strange not to see her at the shop.
I guess this means I can’t make CHILI with it anymore, darn.
