BLACKSBURG, Va. - The gunman suspected of carrying out the Virginia Tech massacre that left 33 people dead was identified Tuesday as an English major whose creative writing was so disturbing that he was referred to the school's counseling service. News reports also said that he may have been taking medication for depression, that he was becoming increasingly violent and erratic, and that he left a note in his dorm in which he railed against ''rich kids," ''debauchery" and ''deceitful charlatans" on campus. Cho Seung-Hui, a 23-year-old senior, arrived in the United States as boy from South Korea in 1992 and was raised in suburban Washington, D.C., officials said. He was living on campus in a different dorm from the one where Monday's bloodbath began. Police and university officials offered no clues as to exactly what set him off on the deadliest shooting rampage in modern U.S. history.

The Korean culture is brutal to those it perceives as unsuccessful. This young man was probably getting ready to graduate. My guess is that he didn’t see a successful future for some reason. I don’t know about Koreans, but the Chinese are extremely materialistic and judge one another on the basis of owning things. He did not go into the a major with a high expectation of a high salary, like engineering, etc. All of these things could be a part of what was mulling around in his head.
From what I’ve heard, a lot of the students thought the sound came from construction going on next door.
“I smell a lawsuit brewing.”
Would you agree the school’s response was lousy?
Insurance settlements most likely.
! yeah, that 2,
+ not getting laid.
No you are not wrong. My son is a musician working with Koreans and they are looking around for one very talented player to join their group... It just so happens the best guy for the job is African American. The Koreans refuse as of now, because they are afraid nobody will come and listen to them if they go to Korea.
I feel like you survived a close call. Glad things are better for you now.
“And arent fond of Japanese.”
They have very good reasons for that!
Korean Students Blame U.S. For 1980 Massacre Of 2000 Students
South Korean soldier who suffered bullying has killed eight of his comrades and injured two others
Some Japanese considered Koreans to be almost sub-human; the brutality with which Koreans were treated during the decades of occupation by Japan is testament to this.
You’re right!
Yes, some of the TV video broadcast had a multistory concrete building in the early stages of construction in the background behind their reporters. Just concrete floors, walls and exposed wall framing. If the construction crews were setting studs with explosive nail guns, their report could be mistaken for a gunshot (and vice versa).
It is interesting that the same confusion of gunshots for construction noise was also mentioned by some of the students and staff in the aftermath of the murder-suicide at the University of Washington in Seattle - about a month ago(?).
Ritalin is what the Columbine boys were on.
Pray for W and Va Tech
Making the dangerous assumption that a prescription indicates that a doctor is actively monitoring the person, I find this to be very preferable to having someone self-medicate. The tower shooter in Austin, TX was a alcoholic, other school shooters have used other drugs.
The one part of the profile for school shooters that I am waiting to see come out, loner and depressed are already there, is the obsession with violent video games, movies, or songs, or possibly all listed.
Is it possible that he converted to Islam? Sounds a bit like one of their insane rants.
Why the students did not bull rush this POS is beyond me. A few would have been shot, but very few.
I don’t know, with two 9 MM pistols ablaising, my hero would have been zero!
I remember when Virginia Tech came to College Station to play Texas A&M. The Corps of Cadets from both A&M and VT marched into Kyle field prior to the game. There was an awesome low altitude B-52H flyover just before the kickoff. One of the Virginia Tech students held up a sign that said “Engineers not English Majors”.
Prozac makes people kill other people.
Hey, hey, hey. We’re not ALL lefty moonbats! There are a few (very few) of us in English departmets who are almost entirely sane!
