EXCERPTS ......draft deferments kept Giuliani, 62, out of Vietnam while he attended law school. He was granted a 2-A occupational deferment for his job as a law clerk in 1969 after his boss, the late Manhattan federal Judge Lloyd MacMahon, wrote a letter to the local draft board - a move criticized years later as rare and questionable. Law clerks were not on the 1968 list of critical jobs that qualified for occupational deferments.........

That was then. Now the dodger is in spin control:
Rooty's spokeswoman Katie Levinson told New York magazine Rooty was opposed to the war in Vietnam on "strategic and tactical" grounds.......
The thought of slick dodger Rooty plotting to send even one American soldier into battle is nauseating.
I guess you could say Americans "oppose" Rooty's candidacy on "strategic and tactical" grounds.......
...and grand-dad, great-grand-dad, great-great-grand-dad (all Navy) and his UNCLE SAM! Who told you?
McCain(fascist) elbowing Guiliani(socialist) out of the way is a mixed blessing at best.
Is it true that the original letter and other related documents will be aired on 60 Minutes soon, and Dan Rather will be brought out of retirement to present them?
Nobody, I made the choice to serve on my own.
Rudy's deferment is well-documented. Nice try, though.
Heh---better ask buckhead---FR's resident document genius.
Unscientific poll. Meaningless. Somebody wanted to show that McCain was rising in the polls because of his Iraq stance.
Recent straw polls of GOP insiders in SC, where McCain used to be strong in 2000, show him plummeting. Unscientific, too, but a better leading indicator.
...well, bravo zulu, but give McCain credit for serving too.
I’m not disparaging his service to our country, just noting he didn’t have much of a choice in the first place due to the family history and pressure from his father the Admiral.
Its worth remembering less than 5% of the total living population in this country has served in the military. Using it as a ‘benchmark’ is ridiculous as it relates to hiring a President in my opinion.
Well, perhaps, but IMHO it counts big time when service is done in times when a nation is relying on a draft to fill its military ranks.
Serving always ‘counts’ with me as well...but it doesn’t supercede anything, just adds a very postive dimension.

2008 Republican Presidential Primary -Giuliani 33% McCain 19% Thompson 13% (New Rasmussen)
Former New York City Mayor Rudy Giuliani and Arizona Senator John McCain both gained support this week in the race for the GOP nomination. Former Tennessee Senator Fred Thompson and former Massachusetts Governor Mitt Romney held steady and remain the only other Republicans earning double digit support.
The latest Rasmussen Reports national telephone survey of the Republican Presidential Primary competition finds Giuliani at 33%, fourteen points ahead of McCains 19%. Thompson is still in third at 13% slightly ahead of Romney at 11%. For Giuliani, thats his highest level of support in three weeks. Its McCains best showing since early March. Last week, it was Giuliani 27% McCain 16% Thompson 14% and Romney 12%.
Ciuliani is still the way ahead front runner, no slippage. The VA shooting will knock politics off the news for a week. McCain stupidly jumped in right away with politics re: gun control. Waaaaaaaaay too soon.
If there’s a deferment then it’s a non-issue. I had a college deferment back then, and once out of school was place in the draft lottery for one year. Had a low number so I got drafted. Rudy got a high number so wasn’t drafted. That’s the way it worked back in the late-60’s/early-70’s.
The only way the deferment becomes an issue is IF THERE WASN’T A DEFERMENT. Then one would have to be manufactured and aired on 60 Minutes with Dan Rather reporting.
He got a special deferment as a law clerk, but that was not a position elibigle for that type of deferment. He got it only when his boss, a judge, wrote a letter for him.
So try as you might, this ain't apples to apples. Rudy got special treatment.

A deferments by design was special treatment. The eligibility was determined by the local draft board. Letters of support for a deferment were routinely provided for consideration by the draft boards. These often came from colleges, universities, employers, family members, etc. A deferment only delayed your eligibility for the draft, it did not eliminate it. Rudy, like myself and 1000’s of others were placed in the draft for one year after the deferment expired. If by luck, you got a high number you most likely wouldn't be called. If you got a low number, you probably would be called.
Stop beating a dead horse and move on, unless you’re aware that there are documents out there that suggest that he never received a deferment....then bring on Dan Rather and 60 Minutes.
