Gunman on Campus; Stay inside your building, away from windows; Shooting incident at West Ambler Johnston Hall

The question is not a simple one (except from the concept of the absolute right in the constitution to own a weapon).
It is clear that, in a situation like this, having armed people in each classroom would have ended this sooner.
But what is not clear is how many people might have been killed by guns after minor traffic accidents, fights over women, normal violent behavior at school, if a lot of kids had guns readily available. I’m not saying there is ANY evidence that having guns available WOULD lead to them being used in these other situations, just that it is not without merit to think about it.
I heard on the news that Liviu Librescu held the doors to his classroom closed, despite the gunman shooting into them, so that his students could escape out a window. Holocaust survivor, great man.
Good news! All the kids of my friend have been accounted for and fine. She is very glad. After reaching all their parents the kids had all finally made contact and are ok, but went through a hell of a day.
The facts. The facts.
And the patience to wait for facts, and in not joining the "hype" parade.
VA Tech sounds like my tenor of my home and family.
This student being interviewed on FOX now with Shep may well be our president in 30 years..wearing a starched white shirt AND a tie..and very articulate..
MSNBC says -
They found a cell phone near the dead shooter and they thought the cell phone belonged to the dead shooter. Now they believe the cell phone belonged to an Asian guy who arrived in August 2006 on a student visa, not the shooter.
They believe the shooter was in the US legally on a permanent visa so it would be legal for him to purchase guns in the USA.
Thank you so much. Another Freeper also linked me. Thanks again. I get so emotional about this stuff and I have a special love for those who endured the holocaust. I know Professor Lebrescu rests in God’s arms at last.
Amen, my friend; amen.
Derek O’dell is doing an excellent job.
Brave young man.
I know...but the shirt and tie is so kewl..so mature...
Thanks.
The same people who personalize the "why didn't someone act sooner to STOP this thing" are the same people, apparently, who can put themselves into the mind set of a victim or potential victim --
But never into the mindset of a person trying to deal with, capture, and halt this horror.
In a large area like a campus or town, I would advocate a siren (like the old civil defense alarms). They use them for tornado warnings and people know that means get inside, take cover, stay there til the all-clear.
Why wouldn't such a warning work here? Administrators knew there was an armed man on the loose...and he'd just murdered 2 people. Students and the community should at least have been informed of THAT information.
It wouldn't have stopped the 2nd rampage. But some of those students may have stayed home.
Sorry, I am just getting up.
I do know that I find the discussion concerning whether or not he could legally purchase a gun tragic. I say tragic because it is confounding that we can entertain the idea that guns are legal for an individual matters at all in any of these tragedies.
Gun laws are to keep guns away from folks who RESPECT laws and to deprive the same people of their power and freedom.
Certainly no one here believes that gun laws are intended to keep us and our families safe? Are they working?
Shep keeps asking Derek questions.
Awesome kid.
Every morning, high school students drive by 10s if not hundreds of other students meandering their way into buildings that have just opened. Those high school students are driving SUVs.
Imagine two hundred students in a breezeway in the slight rain (under the roof) waiting for the doors to open, and a guy in a large 4-wheel drive SUV deciding to run them over.
You could well end up with more people dead than at Tech.
It’s not the weapons, it’s the people who use them. We certainly shouldn’t change laws for the worse based on the abberent “worst shooting ever”.
Wow - wouldn't that be something if this get spun into an argument over abortion ... I can't wait for the no news conference at 9 am. Hope we learn something.
How terribly sad about him and the other victims. While many no doubt were random victims, I wonder if he and others were targeted.
