I miss thinking it was one. This is too horrifying to even think about.

I live about a mile from one of those schools (in NJ)

Slightly OT, but how did you find out that that school was on the list? I've never seen any published list of which schools were targeted.

A statement by the presiden to VT indicates that there may have been at least two shooters. The statement can be found
:www.breitbart.com/article.php?id=D8OHR3800&show_article=1

Here is the part which indicates maybe more than one shooter was involved

” Now here are some of the facts as we know them. At about 7:15 this morning, a 911 call came to the university police department concerning an event in West Ambler Johnston Hall. There were multiple shooting victims. While in the process of investigating, about two hours later, the university received reports of a shooting in Norris Hall. The police immediately responded.

The shooter in Norris Hall is deceased. There are multiple fatalities. The number of fatalities has not been confirmed. Victims have been transported to various hospitals in the immediate area in the region to receive emergency treatment. And we will proceed to contact the next of kin as the victims’ identities are available. All classes are canceled and the university is closed for the remainder of the day. “

The reason I suspect more than 1 shooter is because the president specified the shooter in Norris Hall is deceased. Why not just say the shooter? Anyone else hear if there is more than one shooter involved?

“.. you would think once the shooting started people would be running like crazy.”

I just heard on Fox that “the gunman lined them up.”

32 NOW. OMG. THIS IS NOT ABOUT A DISGRUNTAL BOYFRIEND!

Could be. Jilted lovers can be totally desperate and have the feeling that they have nothing to lose or to live for.

He could have easily felt that the college or even some of the students were somehow responsible for his situation.

I'm a bit confused over something from this story:

Police: At Least 21 Dead After Virginia Tech University Shooting

The school's Web site earlier said one shooter was in custody and officials searched for a second shooter as "part of routine police procedure," but during the press conference Monday, police said they believe there was only one shooter.

Police also said there is no evidence the two shootings at opposite ends of campus were related.

Perhaps somebody can explain how the police can believe there was only one shooter yet maintain that the shootings at opposite ends of campus could be unrelated. If there is only one shooter, then the shootings are related. If the shootings are not related, there has to be more than one shooter.

I’m in college and I would feel incredibly uncomfortable going to class surrounded my random people with firearms.

You likely already ARE surrounded, by people who are not licensed to carry.

April 13, 2005 - Virginia Tech's ban on guns may draw legal fire

Clip:

Hincker, meanwhile, said it is not unusual for colleges to have more restrictive policies than the state. As an example, Hincker said certain chemicals and explosives that are legal on the outside are prohibited in the classroom or in dormitories for safety reasons.

"We think we have the right to adhere to and enforce that policy because, in the end, we think it's a common-sense policy for the protection of students, staff and faculty as well as guests and visitors," Hincker said.

Virginia Tech also has the backing of the Virginia Association of Chiefs of Police. In a policy position paper dated April 1, association executive director Dana Schrad wrote that the presence of guns on college campuses "adds a dangerous element to an environment in which alcohol is a compounding factor." Students should not have to be concerned about guns on campus, Schrad wrote.

"The excellent reputation of Virginia's colleges and universities depends in part on the public's belief that they are sending their college-age children to safe environments," the policy paper reads.

At least one attorney who represents college students would like to see the concealed-carry permit issue clarified.

John Robertson, the Student Legal Services attorney at Tech, said he's heard differing interpretations of the policy at Tech. Robertson, whose position is funded through the Student Government Association's budget, does not represent students in disputes with the university but offers free legal advice and services to students on civil and criminal matters.

Robertson said he would like to see either a court or the state Attorney General's Office resolve the matter. As for a university's refusal to honor a concealed-carry permit, Robertson added: "I am dubious that one particular arm of the state can do so without a particular statute."

Someone I know has a son at VA Tech. Still waiting for word about him or from him.

Anyway...prayers for the victims and their families and for those also awaiting word on their loved ones.

When I was in HS (30 years ago, in Alabama) it was common to see rifles & shotguns in gun racks in pickups in the school's parking lot. Time's have changed.

I graduated from Cordova HS in 1982. I've seen the deer rifles in the pickups many times.

I saw the part about Jamal. Don’t get too uptight, Jamal was a student hanging out behind police taking the video with his cell phone until an officer told him to get lost. Typical action of any 18 to 22 year old student not aware of the gravity of the situation. He is not the terrorist link you are looking for.

Why is the White House even giving a press conference?

This is a (nearly) daily press briefing that is held supposedly to discuss White House matters.

It's the idiot reporters who are bringing this crap up.

The White House probably doesn't know much more than we do at this point.

Unless they are on the FReepublic, probably less.

from AP:

FBI spokesman Richard Kolko in Washington said there was no immediate evidence to suggest it was a terrorist attack, “but all avenues will be explored.”

I am guessing that the gunman shot the person who tried to stop him. Then he moved on to his intended target, the Engineering Department. Speculation on my part.

I am watching Fox News waiting for a map of some kind . Without that, we are still in the dark regarding locations.

I flipped thru CNN about 15 minutes ago, and they were showing a campus map.

How horrible. Sounds like more than one gunman, maybe with links to terrorist groups. If some of the students or faculty had carried a gun, lives would have been saved.

Why is the White House even giving a press conference? What information can they add?

I liked the part the spokes lady added at the end about sending all the help they can 'if the State of Virginia asks for it'.

Not necessarily. Statistically, most deaths by firearm are due to exsanguination (bleeding out) because of aid taking too long to get to the victim.

In this case, a moderate to severe but not instantly fatal wound from a 9mm could result in death if the victim and bystanders had no idea of first aid for bullet wounds. Or, it could result in death due to shock, etc.
