Republican '08 options disappoint evangelicals (Land: would vote for Hillary over Rudy)
Washington Times ^ | April 16, 2007 | Ralph Z. Hallow

Posted on 04/16/2007 4:29:04 AM PDT by Cincinatus' Wife

***... Mr. Giuliani maintains a big lead over his Republican rivals in the polls yet has all the wrong policy positions on social issues such as abortion and homosexual rights considered key to cultivating Christian conservatives. However, some evangelicals and pro-life Catholics seem willing to overlook his faults -- including his two divorces -- in the belief that he is the only Republican actually running who can defeat the Democratic nominee in 2008.

Still, Mr. Giuliani and conservative Christians "probably have irreconcilable differences on life and family and that kind of thing," said Mr. Falwell, adding, "I couldn't support him for president."

Nor is Mr. Dobson in Mr. Giuliani's cheering section.

"I do not believe that the current excitement over Giuliani will continue," Mr. Dobson told U.S. News & World Report.

Richard Land, president of the Religious and Ethics Liberty Commission of the Southern Baptist Convention, takes a hard line against virtually all the major Republican candidates. He says he'd vote for Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton, New York Democrat, over Mr. Giuliani if the 2008 presidential race came down to such a choice. And if Mr. Giuliani wins, "he'll do so without social conservatives," Mr. Land said. .....

Who is your favorite Rino for VP?

Probably Romney. At least he is pretending to be a conservative.

The media has done nothing but work to fan the flames in the GOP.

You're right, and there's no shocker there.

What doesn't make sense to me is why so many are buying the line that the only successful republican candidate is one that looks like a democrat. What happened to conservative values? The dems are devoid of thought other than burying their heads in the sand and acting like poorly raised children. We can do much better with candidates that are serious...the world is a serious place with real problems. The dems have no solutions...so why try to shift toward their views?

I've already contacted the Washington Times for a clarification, but regardless of Hallow's journalistic skills, all the statements attributed to Land in the article are apparently third-hand.

"And if Mr. Giuliani wins, "he'll do so without social conservatives," Mr. Land said." Many sources for this

I'm not shifting toward their views. I'm choosing a candidate that can beat Hillary, face down our enemies and take the country on a strong fiscal path. I do not agree with candidates on all their statements, I support them after reviewing all the issues and by my understanding of what they can and can't do.

I am as rock-rib conservative as you can get (Bible-believer, pro-life, pro-2nd Amendment, etc.), and none of these Christian “spokesmen” (Land, Dobson, Robertson, et al)speak for me. Romney or Guliani are far more preferable presidential candidates than the Stalinist Clintons, Osama Obama, The Breck Girl, or any other Commiecrat you can name.

That’s my thinking too.

Thanks for your clarity.

Yes, that statement is easy to source he definitely said it. That's what makes the "vote for Hillary statement" ring false. I went back and read the interviews that were used to generate the quotes for this article and he never said anything about voting for Hillary in any of them. Quite frankly, if Richard Land had said he would vote for Hillary Clinton over Giuliani it would have been a major news story.

For what it's worth, I have not heard back from the Times. I spoke to the SBC's Washington office and was told they were aware of the story and were investigating because they don't believe Dr. Land ever made that statement, but they had not spoken directly to Land and could not be 100% sure until they did.

Do you think that conservative values can't defeat liberal ones? We should chose the best conservative candidate we can find and not speculate and compromise based upon who can beat Hillary. When he first started running Bush wasn't all that well known. Hillary is such a terrible candidate that I'd think any viable candidate should be able to beat her...assuming her minions aren't able to successfully steal the election or murder the competition.

I do not agree with candidates on all their statements, I support them after reviewing all the issues and by my understanding of what they can and can't do.

There is almost nothing I like about Rudy...he knows how to lead and he has courage, both good traits...but he's a liberal...he's staunchly pro abortion, gun control and just about every other liberal position. I'm sick of being given nothing but the lesser of two evils to chose from. It's time for the republicans to send forward a non-evil.

They won’t vote for Hillary, unless they are Dems. They think she’s the anti-christ and may choose to stay home. Whatever! I think they should take care of their own houses before trying to dictate that all Presidential candidates should be pure as the driven snow and pass every litmus test they have. Nothing makes them look more foolish and hypocritical than when some of their own “sinners” are “outed.” Haggard comes to mind.

I believe conservative values are the best rock and foundation for freedom. I believe we are a country of laws and that is why our republic survives. You define Giuliani more to the left than I believe he is (from his words and actions). Perhaps because I like him as a rival to Hillary, I’ve taken more time to listen to what he’s said. I hope along the way we can defeat the left and promote the good things that we all stand for.

I just received an e mail from Dr. Lands secretary. They are now in contact with the Washington Times to correct the damage done by this person who misquoted and misrepresented Dr. Land.

Look for a correction very soon.

I do see Giuliani as pretty far left...left of center, actually. Hillary would be much worse for the nation...but I don't see Giuliani as good for the nation...just less horrific. That is less than inspiring. Abortion is a big issue with me, although by no means the only issue I'm concerned with...so perhaps my weighting on that issue moves him farther to the left in my eyes than for others. I see abortion as the holocaust of the West...worse numerically than what Hitler was able to achieve. So any candidate that'd support genocide isn't really a viable candidate in my eyes.

The last paragraph of the Washington Times article says it all:

Go Rudy!

I'm not sure there is a candidate that's right at center, but maybe the closest might be McCain, who is probably just a bit to the right of center. As I see it, most of the dem candidates are quite far to the left of center, most of the republican ones less far from the center to the right. I don't think there are any candidates that are as far right as Hillary is to the Left...when you start talking about property confiscation to give to others you pretty much have a socialist...and that's pretty far left.

Then do it you big girl. Start that third party that you keep threatening the rest of us with.

Yawn.

Hillary is just another Democrat, nothing more, nothing less. The "we must support Linguine D-ck to stop Hillary" folks don't realize that, to many of us, it isn't the end of the world.

The only good thing that could come out of a Hillary victory is that the Noo Yawk-based pseudocon media will have ZERO influence in the future. Maybe we can then get Murdoch deported back to Australia.
