Earlier this week, there was a vague, unsubstantiated report that the White House has been exploring the notion of creating a senior position to oversee the conduct of the conflicts in Southwest Asia. Ostensibly, this slot would be filled by a retired military officer, and, not surprisingly, the media dubbed him the War Czar.
This astounding report has since been confirmed, and the sheer stupidity of it is staggering.
Reportedly, three retired generals -- Joe Ralston (Air Force), Jack Keane, (Army) and Jack Sheehan (Marines) -- were all approached about the job, and each turned it down. Sheehan has confirmed the story, with the reaction, they (the White House) dont know where theyre going.
I concur.
For one thing, unless hes decided he cant do the job, we already have a War Czar, and his name is Robert Gates, who is the Secretary of Defense.

Colonel Jacobs is 100% spot-on! WTH is wrong with Bush and Gates????????????????????
What they need to do is delegate authority DOWN the chain of command. Delegating used to be one of Bush’s strengths, but then he allowed his trusted advisors to be scalped by the Democrats so now he’s looking to insulate himself & the war effort by installing “war czar”.
Bush is flopping around. 2008 can’t get here soon enough.
The Constitution already identified the position — it is called Commander in Chief.
[Who in the White House is interpreting The Constitution? Alberto?]
Oh, we have no "Border Czar"?
Nevermind...
When I first heard this story a few days ago, I got a bad feeling that the one who wrote the Iraqi Plan might be tapped for the job, since none of the Generals want it. That one — James Baker. [shudders!]
Amazing how quickly things can change. Bush looked like he could be one of the greats a few short years ago. Now he is quickly descending to the Worst President Ever line the leftists overuse.
The burden of greatness is not for everyone. Historical titans cannot be happy people, I think. They must abandon friends and family and devote themselves wholly to their mission. Bush, like almost all humans, balked at the demands.
Czars are for Russians.
I agree. I still think he's above average, but I no longer consider him close to the top. The War, the Border, the spending, it's all gone horribly wrong.
At least he got the Supreme Court right. That's not insignificant.
I saw a blip on TV last night about this and thought “this has gotta be some kind of joke”.
/sigh...we are doomed.
Can’t be true??? I refuse to believe that the “Big Shots” in Washington are that STUPID!! Just what the country needs...another huge beaurocracy. That move would just about seal the Republican’s fate for many elections to come. The libs must be going crazy with joy!! The American public has been subjected to mountains and glaciers of BS about everything in the near past, but if its true....THIS TAKES THE CAKE!!!! (Right...I’m shouting)
This just fits right in pattern with Bush. IE Homeland security, Intel Czar, etc. Just making positions to have the position.
What we need is a Czar Czar, to oversee all the other Czars.

President Bush : “The Buck Never Gets Here.”
Good one!
I like it!
