The absurdity of flipping the premise of reality TV to make a stage-and-screen president America's president appears to be lost on a generation of social conservatives inured to the virtual surreality ¹ of clintonian politics and terrified by the prospect a President Giuliani.

To add to the real-virtual complexity, what if Thompson is not planning to jump in at all? What if this is just another role? What if Fred is playing Perot for his friend, John McCain, (who, in this analogy is clinton to Rudy's Bush 41)?

That is, what if Thompson's sole purpose is to give McCain the nomination by skimming off just enough conservatives from Rudy? (NB: gross is net, i.e., McCain has no conservative support to lose.)

The latest Gallup numbers suggest that Thompson's support is coming almost exclusively from Rudy. (See graph.)

This theory would explain Fred's unwillingness to declare.

Of course, if the plan doesn't work, then Fred may jump off the stage and into the race for real.

The "stalking horse" theory has been debunked for a couple of weeks now. Get over the Rudy-worship and start preparing for a Thompson candidacy.

People ask what is it about Fred Thompson that people are so excited about ?
If you watch him and listen to him, most average Americans can see he is sincere, straight forward talker, likable, and has such a a commanding presents that is reassuring like a anchcor in a storm, and causes the hearts and minds of our enemies to tremble.

I would think "good kind" belongs in quotes... any kind of cancer is not a "good" kind at all.

Still, if it is in remission, then he's pretty much in the same boat as Guiliani and McCain as cancer survivors.

You are a bit inaccurate:

When Thompson made his ‘announcement,’ all his initial support appears to have come from Rudy. Since then Thompson LOST (not gained) 2 points and McCain lost 6. All but one of those 8 points appear to have gone to Rudy. Thompson’s remaining 10 points are likely a subset of the original 12, and are thus from Rudy.

If I understand your theory, Thompson is working for Rudy. Intriguing possibility. That would require believing that the GOP establishment acts in its own best interest, a premise not easily swallowed.

Yeah, I heard that, too. He said it is a mild, treatable form of the disease and he says it should not adversely affect his overall health.

Indolent lymphoma is slow-growing, although it can transform into a more aggressive kind. One important factor is its ‘bulkiness.’

I think Thompson is working for the party. The party is working for Rudy. That much is clear. Yesterday New York moved up its primary to Feb 5. That means both NY and CA will be in February. Talk about setting the table for the guy...

I think, after 2006, party bigwigs figure no social conservative can win in 08. So Thompson is keeping the right at bay. Either McCain or Giuliani could benefit from this. In the end, I think Thompson is running for Veep, or AG or SCOTUS. By floating a trial balloon and not running, he will have helped whomever turns out to be the nominee.

I don’t think lymphoma remissions are generally very durable, especially at Fred’s age. This is not to say he will not be treated repeatedly, but the treatments must change with each reoccurrence, and they become increasingly debilitating.

I like your theory. Its only weak link is that it requires believing the GOP has the street-smarts to conceive of it and the guts to pull it off. ;)
