Romney aims again to explain hunting ('I'm a varmint hunter, not a big game hunter')

INDIANAPOLIS - Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney is taking a second shot at describing his hunting experience.

The former Massachusetts governor has called himself a lifelong hunter, yet his campaign acknowledged that he has been on just two hunting trips — one when he was 15 and the other just last year.

Campaigning in Indianapolis on Thursday, Romney said he has hunted small game since his youth.

"I'm not a big-game hunter. I've made that very clear," he said. "I've always been a rodent and rabbit hunter. Small varmints, if you will. I began when I was 15 or so and I have hunted those kinds of varmints since then. More than two times."

In Keene, N.H., on Tuesday, Romney had said: "I purchased a gun when I was a young man. I've been a hunter pretty much all my life." The next day, the campaign said Romney hunted rabbits in Idaho with cousins as a teenager and shot quail with GOP donors at a game preserve in Georgia in 2006.

Campaign spokesman Eric Fehrnstrom said Wednesday that Romney wasn't trying to mislead anyone, and he promoted Romney's support of gun-ownership rights.

Romney has also supported gun control. When he ran unsuccessfully for the Senate in 1994 he backed the Brady law and a ban on assault-style rifles. As governor, he supported the state's strict gun-control laws and signed into law one of the nation's tougher assault weapons laws.

He joined the National Rifle Association last August as a "Lifetime" member.

We had squirrels nest in our attic year before last. My husband had to find the holes where they got in and then patch them when the squirrel family were out for a romp in the trees and yard. It was funny to see them come back from their romp and look for the way into where they had been nesting. They were confused and mad as all get out, lots of tail swishing and chattering.
We had set live traps for them, but they are smart, got the bait through the sides of the trap but never got caught.

You’re right, neither are suffering from hunger pangs.
:) If the bowl is empty they tell us about it.

"On the 31st anniversary of the Gun Owner’s Action League, Governor Romney declared May 7, 2005 as “The Right to Bear Arms Day” in Massachusetts to honor “the right of decent, law-abiding citizens to own and use firearms in defense of their families, persons, and property and for all lawful purposes, including the common defense.”"

One of those handy "Gee, I'm going to have to win the GOP nomination" conversions.

A 30-06 bolt-action hunting rifle with a softpoint bullet is “designed for killing”.

An AK-47 with a FMJ round is designed for wounding. That’s why you can’t use them to hunt.

I’ll write-in Fred Thompson on the CA ballot, unless he blows it too, in which case I’ll write in myself. Either way, I wish I didn’t have to say that I think we’ve had it. It’s just a matter of time and public education.

What's wrong with Duncan Hunter? If you're at the point of doing a write-in for yourself, you certainly can't claim that you won't vote for him because he can't win.

Great card!

Here's a Romney quote that should be on one:

"I was an independent during the time of Reagan-Bush. I’m not trying to return to Reagan-Bush." - Mitt Romney, during his 1994 debate with Senator Ted Kennedy

He clearly did hunt, enjoyed it, doesn't oppose it, considers himself a hunter, but it is not his #1 past-time. Who cares....

I tend to agree. I've never been hunting in my life, but I'm a strong Second Amendment supporter both on sporting grounds and on social grounds. Of course, I've never signed an "assault weapons" ban either, so I don't have that mistake to live down. In either case, I'll be glad to see this nonsense go away. I don't think that Mr. Romney can really help himself with these kinds of discussions.

Bill

Now EV, that’s a quote worthy of a Romney having a RINO card.

Mitt is a drek. He panders so much it is embarrassing. I still remember the guy trying to outliberal Ted Kennedy in the 1994 senate debate. These guys insult our intelligence pretty regularly.
