Don't Idealize Leon Trotsky

Leon Trotsky He was a mass murderer, not the true champion of the working class. By Clive James Posted Monday, April 2, 2007, at 7:06 AM ET

Under a totalitarian regime it is the apparatus that implements the dictatorship. But if my hirelings are occupying all the key posts in the apparatus, how is it that Stalin is in the Kremlin and I am in exile?

—Leon Trotsky, quoted by Dmitri Volkogonov in Stalin

After being murdered at Stalin's orders, Lev Davidovich Bronstein, alias Leon Trotsky (1879–1940), lived on for decades as the unassailable hero of aesthetically minded progressives who wished to persuade themselves that there could be a vegetarian version of communism.

Trotsky, ever the love of the New Left of the sixties and still, even today, of the intellectual class of lefties. "If only Stalin wouldn't have killed Trotsky, the dream would live on..."

Pathetic lot they are.

The comparison of Trotsky to Osama is instructive. This is what we are up against. Osama will be killed at some point, but his legacy will continue and we have to be prepared for that reality.

I think of Groucho as sort of a Humean cynical conservative, not a Trotskyite. Lennon, though, was a true communist.

The stars of the Left, Trotsky, Che, Mao, Castro, Chavez, Mugabe, the list goes on and on. The Left screams “HUMAN RIGHTS”, but their heroes are nothing more than murderous thugs...........

I heard Barbara Lee and two accomplices call for a National Holiday to celebrate the birthday of Che, Fiedel executioner.

I am still in shock.

ALL those early Bolsheivik leaders have lots of blood on their hands. Besides Trotsky, the left has always idolized Lenin as well, and he was just as bad as the rest. How many times does one hear that “Soviet communism would not have been such a bad thing had Lenin lived and mean old Stalin not taken over”?

Ah, yes. And there are some who will also say that Lenin betrayed communism...and if only Marx’s true vision had been implemented, then...we would be in Nirvanah. Or whatever.

It’s always “let’s try again” with the left.

I recently heard it said that communism is best understood as a Christian heresy, ie, it reaches into the language and ethics of Christianity and hijacks the terms (dignity, freedom, etc.). I have often thought that Marxism mirrors Christianity, but I never put it quite so succinctly. That explains its awfulness and ongoing appeal to leftist intellectuals quite nicely. Now, if only the church at large were in a position to put down this awful heresy, that would be good. Similarly, if the church were truly united and aggressively so against Islam, then the west would not be nearly as threatened.

Nice screen name, by the way. It shows that you are a student of various totalitarianisms. They are really all the same, at the end of the day, aren’t they?

Mugabe. Good grief. He’ll probably get a Nobel Peace Prize before he is rotting in his grave. (Right after Gore gets his, of course).

Yep, nothing changes. That old saw about "those who do no know history are doomed to repeat it" is such a crock. We repeat it all the time, whether we know what happened in the past or not.

How about:

Those who do no know history are doomed to repeat it unknowingly. Those who do know history are doomed to repeat it knowingly.

According to Trotsky, Stalin was not sufficiently communist, that is, his communism wasn’t far enough left for Trotsky, and Stalin wasn’t brutal enough (!) in carrying out his reforms. I wish the idiots who are taking Trotsky as a hero would just read the book Trotsky wrote about Stalin after he (Trotsky) was exiled and living in Mexico (and cavorting with Freida Kahlo). Just because he ended up with an ice pick in his head, courtesy of the Soviets, doesn’t make him a martyr.

Similarly, though I am happy anytime a communist meets this particular fate, the fact that Stalin was the originator doesn’t make him a hero....

“Cavorting with Freida Kahlo”> I looked her up, and they had a picture. The mind boggles at cavorting with that, as it does with most leftist chicks.
