Although the presidential election is 19 months away, the Republican Party has a real and growing problem in Ohio that could cost it the White House in 2008.
Simply put, the GOP brand is in trouble in Ohio, more so than it is nationally. That matters because in 2004 Ohio was the key to an Electoral College majority, and could well be the same in 2008.
Since the 2004 election in which President Bush narrowly defeated John Kerry, the undercurrent in Democratic thinking for 2008 has been to hold the states Kerry won and to turn Ohio from red to blue.
If Ohio's 20 electoral votes were to go to the Democrats, assuming that no other states switch allegiance, that would give them the White House.
And as simplistic as that strategy sounds, it could turn out to be successful because of the woes that are besetting the Republicans in the Buckeye State, more than in any other key battleground.
In fact, polls of Ohio voters are finding them less inclined to support GOP candidates, less likely to consider themselves Republican than in the recent past, and giving higher ratings to potential Democratic candidates with a consistency that should set off alarm bells at the Republican National Committee.
Ohio has historically has been slightly more Republican than one of the other big Electoral College battlegrounds, Pennsylvania. In recent presidential elections it has been roughly as GOP as Florida, the other major swing state.

We need to take '06 and flip it right back in the Dems face. As here in Iowa they persuaded everyone to give George Bush the middle finger and vote Democrat right down to the local level. With their new found power they've turned right around and voted a liberal Democrat agenda. We need to seize on their record and parade it high and low in '08.
That is a fact and I don't see an answer. The only thing I hope is that Ohioans observe the Democratic Majority in Congress and go back to the GOP.
Rudy is the only Republican who can win Ohio in 2008.
Republicans are in trouble NATION WIDE and the reason is because no one on our side is willing to fight. Our leaders are too busy apologizing. Nothing makes our side buckle like Cindy Sheehan with a mic or a group of disorganized Code Pinkos.
Another problem on the national level is that New York and California would vote for Adolph Hitler, so long as he was on the democrat ticket. That's a huge head start....
I pray it will happen, but i fear it will not. President Thompson and Vice President John McCain will, however, reunite our country.
narrowly defeated john kerry, wasn't ohio more than 100,000 votes or close to that?
i'd call narrow, new mexico, with 5000 votes (or close to that, or one of the other states with small margins)
they're trying to rewrite history again
"I pray it will happen, but i fear it will not. President Thompson and Vice President John McCain will, however, reunite our country."
While you're at it, I'll be praying that John McCain isn't within a thousand miles of the GOP ticket in 2008.
I agree. The best nomination if the Republicans want to win is Rudy. At least today that is what the polls are saying
It's really hard to determine the differences between parties now. Both are for bigger government and vastly larger spending, and less personal freedom all while playing grab ass in DC. Then there was the embarrassing grab for cash in the Pennsylvania Legislator.
Sadly, I think the only thing that will straighten the mess out is a strong third party; maybe the Constitutional Party?
Americans like winners. Despite the rampant corruption and extremism of the Dems, they act like winners (helps to have the One Party Press admittedly).
Repubs still act like wimps and losers.
Big problem and getting worse, lead by Apologizer In Chief Bush.
A conservative who is politically savvy and wanted to win in the general election, would vote for Rudy. Unless we can run a candidate who can win some blue states, we stand to lose everything and could face disaster. Only Rudy can do this. Republican conservatives can talk about Romney or Thompson or Hunter till they're blue in the face but facts are facts and none of the conservative candidates usually mentioned on this site has the clout with the general public in places like OH, NJ, FL, PA, MN, CT, CA, OR, IO, RI--that Rudy has, just to name a few blue or battleground states that would hand the GOP a landslide victory and secure the Congress for them in '08.
Sounds good to me!
I agree with you that Rudy could probably win the presidency with relative ease, but I doubt he would have coattails down the ticket.
The marginal Giuliani voter would probably not see a dilema in supporting him and a Democrat for Congress at the same time. Rudy is not a very partisan figure.
At this point I feel the only conservative that could win the nomination and the presidency is Fred Thompson. His name at the top of the ticket would probably be more of an inspiration to the base as well, and IMHO give us a better shot at taking back Congress.
As long as gasoline is 3+ a gallon, the Pubs are going to get hammered. That is the number one real issue for the average Joe, who pays attention to politics about as much as I pay attention to Rosie O'dious.
N.E. Ohio pings.
Very good point. Rahm Emanuel ran a "Blue Dog" slate at MOR voters, trying to persuade them to vote for "conservative-sounding" Democrats in place of Republicans.
Need to get out those "Blue Dog" voting records and rub them in the 'Rats' faces -- all the Rats', make it a credibility issue. "When 'Rats tell you this and this and you vote for them, you get that and that instead. Democrats = fraudsters!"
The only fighter who has announced is Duncan Hunter, and if you think there are no fighters, more are in the background.
