Ahmadinejad Vows News Soon on Atomic Work
-Full Story-

Iran's president promised on Sunday Iranians would soon hear more news about the Islamic Republic's nuclear program, which the West believes is a covert effort to build atomic bombs despite Tehran's denials.

"The Iranian nation will soon hear fresh news about our country's nuclear transition," Mahmoud Ahmadinejad was quoted by the official IRNA news agency as saying.

He did not give details about any announcements or when the news would be released but Ahmadinejad is due to hold a news conference on Tuesday.

“Three charged over 7/7 bombings”

ARTICLE SNIPPET: “Three men have been charged in connection with the 7 July suicide bombings in London.

Mohammed Shakil, 30, Waheed Ali, 23, and Sadeer Saleem, 26, were charged with conspiracy to cause explosions on transport or at tourist attractions.

Scotland Yard said the hunt for those involved in the bombings was not over and more arrests were expected.

Four suicide attacks killed 52 people on three London Underground trains and a bus in 2005.

Arrests

Mr Shakil, from Beeston, West Yorkshire, and Mr Ali, from Tower Hamlets, east London, who was previously known as Shipon Ullah, were boarding a flight to Pakistan at Manchester Airport when they were detained in March.

Mr Saleem, also from Beeston, was arrested at an address in Leeds.

The three are accused of conspiring with the 7 July bombers between the 1 November 2004 and the 29 June 2005 to cause explosions on the London transport system or at tourist attractions in the city.

“The allegation is that they were involved in reconnaissance and planning for a plot with those ultimately responsible for the bombings on the 7 July before the plan was finalised,” said Sue Hemming, head of the Counter Terrorism Division of the Crown Prosecution Service.

Bombers Mohammad Sidique Khan, 30, Shehzad Tanweer, 22, Germaine Lindsay, 19, and Hasib Hussain, 18, all died in the blasts, and the latest charges are the first to be made over the attacks.”

ARTICLE SNIPPET: “MANA, Kauai » The U.S. Army and the Ballistic Missile Defense Agency once again shot down a Scud-type missile off Kauai’s west side last night.

It was the second successful test this year of the Terminal High Altitude Area Defense system, the mobile arm of the ballistic missile defense system operated by the U.S. Army, and its third successful test overall.

“Women at Love Field ‘acting suspiciously’
Dallas: Police have no evidence Muslims have ties to terrorists”
10:12 PM CDT on Thursday, April 5, 2007

By JASON TRAHAN / The Dallas Morning News
jtrahan@dallasnews.com

ARTICLE SNIPPET: “Dallas police and federal terrorism officials are investigating two women, both dressed in camouflage pants under their traditional Muslim robes and scarves, who were seen conducting what appeared to be surveillance and acting suspiciously at Dallas Love Field.

One of the women, Kimberly “Asma” Al-Homsi, 42, of Arlington, who is on probation for a 2005 Garland road rage incident involving a fake grenade, is said to have long-range assault rifle and explosives training, according to a Dallas police intelligence bulletin issued March 5.

“I’m a trained sniper and proud of it,” Ms. Al-Homsi said in an interview Thursday after first refusing to comment on whether she has any terrorism ties. She then said no.

Police officials said they have no direct evidence the women have ties to terrorism.

“I am not a dangerous individual,” said Ms. Al-Homsi, who said she is an accountant who has dual Syrian-U.S. citizenship.”

U.S.-Iraqi Partnership Proves Potent For Combating Insurgents

By Gerry J. Gilmore
American Forces Press Service

WASHINGTON, April 6, 2007 – The partnership between Iraqi and U.S. soldiers is helping to tamp down insurgent violence northwest of Baghdad, a senior U.S. military officer assigned in Iraq said today.

“The key to this counterpart relationship is our partnering of one U.S. company to each Iraqi army battalion,” Army Col. Paul E. Funk, commander of the 1st “Iron Horse” Brigade of the 1st Cavalry Division, told Pentagon reporters during a satellite-carried news conference from his headquarters in Iraq.

Assigned to Multinational Division Baghdad, Funk and his 3,800 soldiers have teamed with Iraqi Army troops and police forces since December to conduct security and reconstruction missions within a 900-square-mile area with 2 million, mostly Sunni, inhabitants.

Funk said he increased the U.S.-to-Iraqi troop-advisor ratio from one U.S. advisor to 70 Iraqi soldiers when he arrived, to one U.S. advisor to 14 Iraqis troops. This change is significant, he said, because top-notch U.S. soldiers are helping the Iraqi Army to “develop lasting capabilities in terms of training, leadership and accountability.”

Violence in his area has decreased, Funk said, noting that gangland-type, sectarian killings have dropped from as many as eight a month to one or two. The colonel attributes this reduction to the five U.S.-Iraqi manned joint security stations established across his area that enable U.S. and Iraqi security forces to interface with local residents.

“We can project combat power in just about any place that allows us to really focus our efforts to getting to the local populace,” he said.

This tactic, introduced by Multinational Force Iraq commander Army Gen. David H. Petraeus, is helping “to drive a wedge” between Iraqi citizens and the insurgents, Funk explained. The average Iraqi, he said, is fed up with the insurgents and wants peace and stability.

There’s also “increasing success with eliminating the number of IEDs along the roadways,” Funk said. The increased presence of joint U.S.-Iraqi patrols, he noted, is making it difficult for insurgents to plant improvised explosive devices, also known as roadside bombs.

“A good piece of news is that IEDs are down in my sector about 40 percent,” Funk said. The enemy, he noted, “doesn’t have time to do as thorough a reconnaissance as they used to when they put them in (before).”

But, there’s concern about insurgents movement of personnel, weapons and equipment across his area of operations, Funk acknowledged.

“To eliminate these threats, we are targeting critical leadership nodes and having success destroying the insurgent networks,” the colonel pointed out.

Funk cited Iraqi troops for “doing a fantastic job,” while partnering with his soldiers on a daily basis. The Iraqi soldiers “are a huge part in my fight up here,” he added.

The Iraqi troops put an Iraqi “face” on anti-insurgent operations, the colonel noted, which has proved to be a great asset during security operations and for gaining local residents’ trust and cooperation.

“In many cases it’s their neighborhoods, and they recognize foreigners,” Funk said of the Iraqi soldiers. “And, they understand different dialects of Arabic. So, they are a tremendous resource in terms of intelligence and reconnaissance.”

The Iraqi Army is rapidly coming into its own, Funk said, pointing to the successful Iraqi-led “Operation Decapitated Serpent” completed about two weeks ago, that nabbed more than 18 insurgents and produced three or four enemy weapons caches. U.S. soldiers with 1st Squadron of the 7th Cavalry Regiment, Funk said, provided aviation support for the Iraqi ground troops.

“It was a tremendously well-executed brigade-level operation done by the Iraqis with the assistance of my great troopers,” Funk said.

Two U.S. Soldiers Killed in Iraq, Iraqis Foil Car Bombs

American Forces Press Service

WASHINGTON, April 6, 2007 – Two American soldiers were killed in northern Iraq yesterday: one by gunfire in Kirkuk, another by an improvised explosive device in Diyala, defense officials said.
A second soldier was wounded in the first incident and two in the second. All of the soldiers were members of Task Force Lightning.

In other news, Iraqi troops foiled a suicide car bomb attempt on a checkpoint south of Baghdad, yesterday. The only casualties in the attack on soldiers of the 2nd Battalion, 4th Brigade, 8th Iraqi Army Division, were the two suicide bombers.

In Al Haswah, a vehicle approached an Iraqi Army checkpoint. The passenger of the vehicle got out and attempted to move surrounding concertina wire. Guards shot and killed the man. The driver of the vehicle then detonated the car bomb, officials said.

In Adamiyah, an improvised explosive device killed an Iraqi civilian and wounded two others yesterday. A route clearance team from the 2nd Brigade Combat Team, 82nd Airborne Division, observed the explosion that struck an Iraqi civilian vehicle. While responding, another IED struck a coalition vehicle. It wounded one soldier, who has returned to duty, officials said.

Terrorists launched another car bomb attack against the Sadr City Joint Security Station on April 4. The attack failed to kill or injure anyone at the facility.

Finally, Iraqi Army troops swept into Ad Diwaniyah April 6 to disrupt militia activity and return security and stability here back to the government of Iraq. Soldiers of the 8th Iraqi Army Division, supported by Multinational Division Baghdad troops, began Operation Black Eagle in response to the recent violence threatening to destabilize the region.

“Instead of showing instability and bowing to intimidation, the Iraqi government and its security forces have taken action and boldly responded to the militia threat,” said Army Col. Michael Garrett, commander of the 4th Brigade Combat Team (Airborne), 25th Infantry Division.

“The decisive actions taken by the 8th Iraqi Army Division is just the beginning of the government’s plan to re-establish security in the area and create an environment where the government can improve the quality of life for the people of Ad Diwaniyah.”
