:::FreeRepublic's Threat Matrix:::
Ahmadinejad Vows News Soon on Atomic Work
-Full Story-

Iran's president promised on Sunday Iranians would soon hear more news about the Islamic Republic's nuclear program, which the West believes is a covert effort to build atomic bombs despite Tehran's denials.

"The Iranian nation will soon hear fresh news about our country's nuclear transition," Mahmoud Ahmadinejad was quoted by the official IRNA news agency as saying.

He did not give details about any announcements or when the news would be released but Ahmadinejad is due to hold a news conference on Tuesday.

“Gridlock, gangs top Angelenos’ concerns
Warming, terrorism trail in survey of L.A.”
BY TROY ANDERSON Staff Writer
Article Last Updated: 04/28/2007 02:13:19 AM PDT

ARTICLE SNIPPET: “Growing traffic jams and rising gang violence top Los Angeles residents’ lists of concerns — beating out global warming and even terrorism, a survey released today says.

On a scale of one to 10 — with 10 being the worst — respondents rated traffic congestion a 7.7, edging out threat of gang violence at 7.6, according to the survey.”

“16 injured in Queens bus crash”
By VERONIKA BELENKAYA and DON SINGLETON
DAILY NEWS STAFF WRITERS
Saturday, April 28th 2007, 1:47 PM

ARTICLE SNIPPET: “A drunken driver blew a red light and broadsided a city bus in Queens yesterday morning - sending 16 people to the hospital, including a pregnant woman, police said.

Cops arrested David Cho - who sources said had three times the legal limit of booze in his blood - as he sped down Booth Memorial Ave. in Flushing.
“He was smashed - they were at a karaoke bar before,” a police source said.
Cho, 25, was behind the wheel of a Nissan Maxima when it roared into the intersection at 164th St., where the Q-65 bus had the green light, officials said.”

“Bad battery insertion botched February bus bombing near Tel Aviv”
By israelinsider staff April 20, 2007

ARTICLE SNIIPPET: “25-year-old Omar Ahmed Abu al-Rob traveled from Jenin to Tel Aviv via Jerusalem, exploiting gaps in the separation barrier. The whole time, he carried the explosive device in his backpack, with the batteries not yet connected. When he arrived in Tel Aviv, he connected the batteries to the explosive device, apparently incorrectly.”

ARTICLE SNIPPET: “The would-be bomber told investigators that as he mentally repeated Koran verses, he pressed the detonator. The bag failed to explode. He tried pressing the switch four more times. Despondent at his failure, he continued to Rishon Lezion, ditched the device in a dumpster and called a friend in nearby Bat Yam, then headed to his house. He tried to convince the friend to try to blow up a restaurant, but the police — alerted to the terrorist on the loose — captured him before a second attempt could be tried.

Abu al-Rob is a member of the Syrian-backed Palestinian Islamic Jihad, specifically of “a dangerous cell responsible for most of the serious suicide bombings that were carried out in the last two years,” according to a security source quoted by YnetNews.

Islamic Jihad members in the Jenin refugee camp filmed al-Rob carrying an M-16 rifle and reading his will. During the filming, there was the sound of an aircraft, causing the terrorist to relocate to local hospital and complete the recording, YnetNews reported.

The police investigation revealed that Abu al-Rob had tried on previous occasions to attack IDF soldiers and Israeli citizens.

Israeli undercover forces killed Islamic Jihad commander Mahmoud Abu al-Jahimon Wednesday in Jenin, a day after Abu al-Rob was apprehended.

Another bombing targeting Tel Aviv, planned for the eve of Passover, was also thwarted by security forces.”

Victory Through Veto
The New Media Journal ^ | April 28, 2007 | David Jeffers

Posted on 04/28/2007 11:21:09 AM PDT by NewMediaJournal

We are now at a crossroads in the Global War on Terror (GWOT). Both the House of Representatives and the Senate have passed their versions of the Surrender Bill. Each bill contains timetables for withdrawal that tells the enemy that if you just lay low for a year, stop attacking us, America will run home just as it did in Vietnam and Somalia.

What will be achieved with the Surrender Bill? First, Osama Bin Laden will be proved right in his assertion that America is nothing more than a Paper Tiger. This of course is absurd, but our history of snatching defeat out of the jaws of victory give him and his fanatic followers reason to believe he will have been right about America...we are weak-willed. Here are Bin Laden’s words during a PBS interview...

“[Texas Governor]Perry’s al-Qaida comments cause stir”
San Antonio Express-News ^ | 04/27/2007 | Peggy Fikac

Posted on 04/28/2007 3:02:26 PM PDT by SwinneySwitch

ARTICLE SNIPPET: “AUSTIN — With the Texas House poised to consider a border security bill and state budget writers deciding how much to spend, Gov. Rick Perry told a Pittsburgh newspaper some border-crossers with al-Qaida ties have been apprehended.

“The information that we have is that there have been individuals who have crossed, and some that have been apprehended, that have ties back to the al-Qaida network,” Perry told the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review on a trip to the city to speak at a Boy Scout dinner.

“I don’t get confused that with the lack of manpower and the lack of resources that the federal government has made available that you can cross the border, and you can cross the border with enough frequency and with enough items to create a lot of havoc,” he said.

Perry spokesman Ted Royer said Friday the statement wasn’t based on new information but was a continuation of comments the governor has made for years. The comments have been based on federal intelligence sources having “confirmed that al-Qaida and other terrorist networks view the Southern border as a prime point of entry,” Royer said, with people from countries where al-Qaida has a known presence having been apprehended all along the border.

Perry has pushed for more state resources for border security, saying Texas must make up for insufficient federal action. A bill detailing border security measures could be debated next week by the House.

Perry’s Pittsburgh comments left some senators perplexed.

“We have absolutely no information” about such apprehensions, said Sen. Eddie Lucio, D-Brownsville, International Relations and Trade Committee chairman. “I would urge the governor to call us in, and give us a briefing, so we can better serve our communities.”

Sen. Eliot Shapleigh, D-El Paso, said, “I’ve heard accounts where people have said that, but I’ve never seen an independent, verifiable report that makes that allegation.

“To use al-Qaida as a ruse to try and get a border security bill before the people is not helpful,” Shapleigh said. “Let’s deal with the facts as they are and protect our nation and at the same time develop comprehensive immigration reform.””

Separating Mullahs From Their Moolah

INVESTOR’S BUSINESS DAILY

4/25/2007

Axis Of Evil: As Hezbollah’s leadership admits Tehran is pulling its strings, Ohio takes a step toward making a contribution to the war on terror: Don’t defund the war; defund the terrorists and their state sponsors.

Despite overwhelming evidence, Democrats have long denied there ever was any link between Saddam Hussein’s Iraq and terrorist organizations like al-Qaida. Even as American and British soldiers are being killed in Iraq and Afghanistan by Iranian-made high-tech explosives, they still refuse to connect the dots between terrorists and their state sponsors.

While House Speaker Nancy Pelosi wants us to follow the teachings of the Iraq Study Group and talk to the thugocracies like Iran, Iran is otherwise occupied in destabilizing the Middle East.

The latest evidence is a confession of sorts by Hezbollah Deputy Secretary-General Naim Kassem in an April 15 interview with the Iranian Arabic-language TV station al-Qawthar.

Kassem told the interviewer that all terrorist attacks, suicide bombings and other operations in Lebanon and against Israel must first be approved by the ayatollahs in Tehran: “In order to know what is permitted and what is forbidden regarding the jihad, we ask for and receive overall permission and only then do we carry out the operation.”

According to Kassem, “The religious doctrine which dictates Hezbollah’s actions in general, and those relating to the jihad in particular, is based on the rulings of the spiritual leader in Tehran. The spiritual leader has the power to permit our actions, and the spiritual leader can forbid them.” Not likely.

As we have noted, Iran has supplied Shiite militants in Iraq with roadside bombs so sophisticated that the word “improvised” before “explosive device” no longer applies.

“3 MS-13 Leaders Convicted on Racketeering Charges”
April 28, 2007 - 8:48am

ARTICLE SNIPPET: “GREENBELT, Md. (AP) - A federal jury has convicted three members of the street gang MS-13 on racketeering charges stemming from Washington area gang murders, assaults, robberies and other offenses.

The panel in Greenbelt found Jose Hipolito Cruz Diaz,28, and Omar Vasquez, 28, along with Henry Zelaya, 20, guilty of conspiracy to participate in a racketeering enterprise. The three are among 26 alleged members of the Latino gang to be prosecuted under the federal RICO statute, which is normally used for organized crime.

Prosecutors say Zelaya and Diaz both headed smaller units of MS-13 in Washington and Maryland, called cliques. Vasquez was allegedly sent from El Salvador to run all the cliques in the Washington area.”

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Detroit, Michigan

MAN CHARGED AS SPY FOR FORMER IRAQI GOVERNMENT

A local man has been charged with acting as an agent of the Iraqi Intelligence Service under the government of Saddam Hussein, United States Attorney Stephen J. Murphy announced today.

Murphy was joined in the announcement by Andrew G. Arena, FBI Special Agent in Charge.

Najib Shemami, 58, of Sterling Heights, was charged by a federal grand jury in a four-count indictment. The indictment alleges that between March 2002 and early 2003, Shemami conspired with others to act as an agent of the Government of Iraq without notification to the Attorney General of the United States, as required by law. The indictment alleges that Shemami traveled from Michigan to Iraq on several occasions and met with officers of the Iraqi Intelligence Service (“IIS”) before the March 2003 invasion of Iraq by coalition forces. During these meetings, the indictment alleges, Shemami reported information relating to the activities of Iraqi expatriates in the United States, potential candidates for political office in Iraq, and U.S. and Turkish military activities he had observed in Turkey before the U.S. entry into Iraq in 2003.

United States Attorney Murphy stated, “Espionage is a federal crime that strikes at the heart of our Nation’s security. Charges such as today’s, that involve the alleged gathering of intelligence information on our soil for a hostile power, will be vigorously pursued by my office. We are fortunate that, in this case, the hostile foreign government no longer exists, but the alleged crime — and the threat it represented — is nonetheless grave.”

Andrew G. Arena, Special Agent in Charge, FBI advised “Protecting the United States against foreign intelligence operations is a top priority of the FBI. Our counterintelligence agents and joint terrorism task force personnel will continue their efforts to identify these individuals involved in espionage against our country.”

An indictment is only a charge and is not evidence of guilt. A defendant is entitled to a fair trial in which it will be the government’s burden to prove guilt beyond a reasonable doubt.

The case was investigated by Special Agents of the FBI.
