Bush poll strategist now backs Kerry

A MAN who played a key role in securing US President George W. Bush's re-election has become the first member of the president's inner circle to publicly break with the adminstration's policies.

Matthew Dowd, who was the president's chief campaign strategist in 2004, is insisting that Bush's 2004 rival, Democratic Senator John Kerry, was right on Iraq, The New York Times reported on its website.

The newspaper said Mr Dowd now says his faith in Mr Bush was misplaced and that Mr Kerry was correct in calling for a withdrawal from Iraq.

In a wide-ranging interview in Austin, Texas, Mr Dowd criticized the president as failing to call the nation to a shared sense of sacrifice at a time of war, failing to reach across the political divide to build consensus and ignoring the will of the people on Iraq, the report said.

He said he believed the President had not moved aggressively enough to hold anyone accountable for the abuses at Abu Ghraib prison in Iraq, and that Mr Bush still approached governing with a "my way or the highway" mentality reinforced by a shrinking circle of trusted aides, the paper said.

"If the American public says they're done with something, our leaders have to understand what they want," The Times quotes Mr Dowd as saying.

It seems to me that there are a lot of cities that might have that motto.

You gotta read the NYT piece. Either Dowd was radically misquoted, or he's a total idiot. He states that one of his epiphanies was reached when Bush refused to meet with Cindy Sheehan.

"...Democratic Senator John Kerry, was right on Iraq..."

First, note the use of the term "DemocratIC" versus using "Democrat." The 'Rats and their lackeys in the MSM continually work on changing the lexicon.

Secondly...this must mean that Kerry was first WRONG on Iraq, if he's RIGHT on Iraq now. *SMIRK*

Ex-Aide Details a Loss of Faith in the President....

I was just reading it, after seeing that Huff Post linked to it.

---SNIP---"He was dumbfounded when Mr. Bush did not fire Defense Secretary Donald H. Rumsfeld after revelations that American soldiers had tortured prisoners at Abu Ghraib.

Several associates said Mr. Dowd chafed under Mr. Rove’s leadership. Mr. Dowd said he had not spoken to Mr. Rove in months but would not discuss their relationship in detail.

Mr. Dowd said, in retrospect, he was in denial. “When you fall in love like that,” he said, “and then you notice some things that don’t exactly go the way you thought, what do you do? Like in a relationship, you say ‘No no, no, it’ll be different.’ ”

He said he clung to the hope that Mr. Bush would get back to his Texas style of governing if he won. But he saw no change after the 2004 victory.

He describes as further cause for doubt two events in the summer of 2005: the administration’s handling of Hurricane Katrina and the president’s refusal, around the same time that he was entertaining the bicyclist Lance Armstrong at his Crawford ranch, to meet with the war protester Cindy Sheehan, whose son died in Iraq."

So a poll strategist for a man who is not running for President is now backing a man who is not running for President.

. . .and they call it news. . .

Meantime; is this Matthew Dowd, a friend of David Brock's. . .?

From the NYT article see below:

"...Mr. Dowd’s premature twin daughters died, he was divorced, and he watched his oldest son prepare for deployment to Iraq as an Army intelligence specialist fluent in Arabic. Mr. Dowd said he had become so disillusioned with the war that he had considered joining street demonstrations against it, but that his continued personal affection for the president had kept him from joining protests whose anti-Bush fervor is so central.

This man has too many recent stresses. He is having some sort of a personal crisis apart from any political considerations. First a Democrat, then a Republican and back to a Democrat in a few easy lessons. Maybe he has a new romantic partner as well.

Dowd needs another job, but if he suddenly has foudn fault with GWB, it is a bit late for that.

Dowd has helped to found a new group, Via Novo along with Blaine Bull, Tucker Eskew and James Taylor. Bull worked for Bentsen, Eskew appears to be a Rep, and Taylor also worked for Bentsen. I would have to research to see in his old firm is the one you are talking about. It sounds like Dowd is trying to disassociate himself from the Reps to drum up future business. Interesting to note that Dowd served as the Chief Strategist for Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger in 2006.

You are right--there is certainly more than one weird city--but this is the first one that I have seen which actually seems to be proud of it. "Keep Austin Weird" appears on bumper stickers, t-shirts (even for children) hats, signs ---you see it just about anywhere you go around here.

Personally, I find that weird!

I don't understand your point. My beef was with Bush's lack of communication with Joe Six Pack regarding why victory in Iraq and the WOT is so important.

>> Matthew Dowd, who was the president's chief campaign strategist in 2004, is insisting that Bush's 2004 rival, Democratic Senator John Kerry, was right on Iraq, The New York Times reported on its website. <<

Hmmm.... so tell us...which of Kerry's THREE different positions on Iraq was the "right" one ? And since it was right, doesn't that mean Kerry was WRONG the other two times?

----------------------------------------------------------

"Knowing there was no imminent threat to America, knowing there were no weapons of mass destruction, knowing there was no connection of Saddam Hussein to al Qaeda, I would not have gone to war. That's plain and simple."
-- John Kerry, Good Morning America, Sept. 22, 2004

"Would have I still gone to war knowing Saddam Hussein did not possess weapons of mass destruction? Yes, I would have voted for the authority. I believe it was the right authority for a president to have -- “[Although] I would have done this very differently from the way President Bush has."
-- John Kerry, candidate forum, Aug. 9, 2004

”Those who doubted whether Iraq or the world would be better off without Saddam Hussein, and those who believe we are not safer with his capture, don’t have the judgment to be president or the credibility to be elected president. If you don't believe Saddam Hussein was a threat with nuclear weapons, then you shouldn't vote for me. I agree completely with this administration’s goal of a regime change in Iraq."
-- John Kerry, L.A. Times, January 2003
