New LAPD flashlights are too small to be used as weapons

LOS ANGELES The L-A-P-D has decided that smaller is better when it comes to flashlights.Police Chief William Bratton is scheduled to unveil new flashlights today that are brighter than the ones they use now, but too small to be used as a weapon.

The idea for the new ten-inch torch was conceived just days after news cameras broadcast images of L-A-P-D officers beating a car-theft suspect with a two-pound, two-foot long standard issue flashlight.

Bratton banned the large flashlights after the 2004 beating and called for manufacturers to create a smaller, brighter flashlight.

A-C-L-U Southern California director Ramona Ripston praised the L-A-P-D for the equipment change.

She says it's an "important step in the right direction."

M7 7060 LED   In a rare collaboration between public and private sectors, the City of Los Angeles Police Department™ (LAPD) has partnered with Pelican Products to develop the Pelican 7060 LED as the standard issue tactical/patrol flashlight for all its officers.

The Pelican 7060 LED light employs new dual switch technology that allows the light to be activated by either a body-mounted patrol switch or a tail-mounted tactical switch. The dual switches, which include a momentary mode, allows the user to grip the light in several positions and still control activation. The light incorporates rechargeable Lithium-Ion batteries for maximum brightness and light weight.

I keep one of those flashlights under the front seat of my car. There's lots of crazy people on the road these days.

It's the same logic either way. If a cop misuses his weapon, whether it be a flashlight or a service revolver, it is the cop who is at fault and should be dealt with accordingly. But, the gun grabbers are now flashlight grabbers, I guess.

There was a local cop known as "Motorola Man" for his creative use of the department-issued radio.

Didn't the city consider the fact that the old flashlights probably kept some incidents from escalating to the point where sidearms are used?

$200 dollars more and you could by each police officer a backup gun, instead.

You can do fine with a light like this in one hand and a baton in the other. Take away someone's sight and they are toast.

This is kind of pointless now, not only is the taser much more effective, it's 100 times more fun to use.

Well, I don't recall Anthony Abatte needed one of those to beat up that bartender.

I'd still give LEOs the Maglites.

Just about any Surefire two or three cell light will momentarily blind the perp. And have you seen their Magnum six-cell number? It'll blind you for a loooong time...SSZ

It has a grenade grip, maybe the battery explodes if you throw it at them.
