Frist says Thompson ‘very aggressively’ considering ’08 run
Nashville City Paper ^ | 03/30/07 | Jared Allen

Posted on 03/30/2007 6:02:49 AM PDT by SE Mom

Bill Frist doesn’t know who is going to win the 2008 Republican primary, let alone the final list of candidates. One thing Frist does know for sure is if his friend and former U.S. Senate colleague Fred Thompson decides to enter the race, he will be “very, very supportive” of a Thompson candidacy.

But with some polls showing Thompson, Tennessee’s second-most-recent former Republican senator, in third place among GOP presidential hopefuls – only weeks after he first hinted that he was considering running for president – talk of Fred Thompson dominated much of Frist’s visit.

Frist confirmed much of the speculation surrounding comments Thompson first made on Fox News Sunday – in which the Law and Order star and movie actor noted that he was thinking of throwing his hat in the campaign ring – by saying he and Thompson have talked at least every other day about a multitude of issues, including a presidential run.

It was just weeks ago, as well, that Frist formally announced that he would not be running for president in 2008.

“He recognizes that at this point in history, people want somebody who can communicate effectively, who can communicate directly, who can cut through a lot of the rhetoric,” Frist said of Thompson. “And Fred can do just that.”

“Over the next several weeks, and it could even be months, he’s going to continue to consider it very, very aggressively,” Frist added.

I'm guessing that Fred doesn't want to officially declare his candidacy too early.

I'm guessing you are exactly right!!!

First time I've seen a picture of Mrs. Thompson. She's a robust young woman!

Buchanan has always been right about the borders and cultural issues. He's just wrong on Israel and like Muzzies too much.

"Hmmm, is the new more subdued look a clue to Thompson's plans?"

hmmmmm indeed! Several years ago (I don't remember how many, but it was while he was a senator) Fred was dating a country singer. She was a wild child who was quite smitten with him. When they broke up my son and I looked at each other and said "she's not first lady material".

wearing an atypically conservative black dress, showing no skin below the neck,

Hmmm. What a shame. I was starting to like Jeri's rather revealing nature.

In all seriousness, a First Lady does have to dress more conservatively! But I can't lie - Jeri's quite a looker!

They're 25 years apart - he's 65 and she just turned 40.

For what it's worth, at this point I'm more inclined to vote for Thompson than any other candidate.

I wouldn't be surprised if Dobson comes out in support of Thompson later on as well.

I respectfully suggest that the reason(s) Thompson is currently in third is that 1--he hasn't declared yet, 2--people know his face but not his name, 3--people don't know his policies. 2 and 3 will be cleared up when he does 1.

Exactly. Yesterday, I saw the brief "head to head" polls over at RealClearPolitics, and they had both Rudy and McCain beating Shrillery. She was beating Fred 51%-37%, and I thought, "Yeah, but if they'd phrased the question different, the results would have been Hillary - 37%, That guy from Law and Order - 51%". Give Fred time. Once people start putting the name to the face, especially when he formally commits, he will NOT be in third anymore.

Ah, guilt by association rears its ugly head again. What's being missed here is that Fred Thompson has a lot of friends from all points in the political spectrum, but these friendships are based on personal, not political, factors.

Fred is a genuinely well-liked guy because he is so... genuine. He has very few enemies, but that will change as the Dems and those Republicans a Fred Thompson run most directly threaten begin to load up their slime buckets for the attacks. We've already seen a little of that. Not much of it will stick, however. Like Reagan, Fred has a teflon anti-BS shield.

"all of the media buzz about "will he or won't he""

It's a pretty good strategy when you think about it. It usually costs a lot of money for a person who is not in office to establish name recognition. The media buzz about his "possible" (I read that as "inevitable") candidacy can take the place of a whole lot of fund raising. And all he has to do is keep saying "I am considering . . ."

It would be nice to think he is both conservative and wily enough to pull a "Tom Sawyer" on the media and get them to paint his fence.

Not to mention, as long as he doesn't declare officially, he gets the benefits of 1) all of the media buzz about "will he or won't he", and 2) the additional (non-regulated) exposure from filling in for Paul Harvey and his Law and Order appearances.

Excellent point.

Another unintended consequence of McKeating/Feingold.

Lord, I hope this isn't the Jeri Thompson who "starred" in "Desert Passion" (soft core porn, '93)! And no, I don't have personal memory of it, I just did a search on her name and it came up (you'll pardon the expression). 'Course, she may not have been Thompson in '93...

And another little clue from USA TODAY: "Here's another sign that Thompson is on the move: His wife Jeri, a former GOP PR operative, has been dusting off her old political reporter contacts list."

http://www.usatoday.com/news/opinion/columnist/raasch/2007-03-29-thompson_N.htm

For a while, it will just be little tidbits like this to tease us. Then, not long after Fred meeets with the House members up on the hill next month, there will be "rumors" that a Fred Thompson exploratory committee is being formed. That will be milked for as much as it's worth, and then there will be "leaks" seemingly confirming the rumors of an impending exporatory committee. Next, the exploratory committee will be "officially" announced. All the while, the buzz will continue to build. And he still will not have had to announce his candidacy. But it will follow soon after the exploratory committee announcement. By them, every opponent but Rudy will have dropped out of the race, and Fred will inherit their organizations and funding. LOL!
