USA Today and Gallup offer their latest in polling for both parties in the extended presidential primary race, and a couple of changes have raised eyebrows. First, even the rumor of a bid by Fred Thompson has dented Rudy Giuliani's momentum, while John McCain's decline in support appears to have leveled off:
"On the Republican side, former Tennessee senator Fred Thompson shook up the field with his announcement that he would consider getting into the presidential race. Thompson is familiar as the actor who plays District Attorney Arthur Branch on NBC's Law and Order. Chosen by 12% of Republican and Republican-leaning voters, Thompson is third in the Republican field. He trails former New York mayor Rudy Giuliani, at 31%, and Arizona Sen. John McCain, at 22%. Former House speaker Newt Gingrich is at 8%."
"Thompson's support seems to come largely from voters who had supported Giuliani. In the USA TODAY poll taken March 2-4, Giuliani's standing had been 13 percentage points higher, at 44%. McCain's support had been 2 points lower then."
"What does this mean? Conservatives who have supported Giuliani for his leadership and electability -- and plenty of them have -- would desert Rudy if a credible, consistent conservative entered the race... Thompson['s]... eight years in the Senate have left a more credible sense of consistency and center-right politics than Giuliani brings to the race. And according to the Post's blog The Sleuth, Thompson has begun seriously considering a run -- and has met with GOP powerhouse advisor Ed Gillespie."

Romney fared poorly in this poll... That has to be disappointing, especially since Hugh Hewitt's political biography and Romney's appearance at CPAC should have set the stage for a significant boost. Has Thompson's potential disrupted Romney's momentum as well? Possibly.

Let's see....that was in 1998, which resulted in the indictments of Democratic fund-raisers Charlie Trie, Maria Hsia and the charges filed against fund-raisers Johnny Chung and Yogesh Gandhi?
Considering that Janet Reno's Justice Department would pursue NO investigations of ANYTHING that incriminated the Democrat Party OR the Klintoon, the 8-7 partisan vote out of that committee was all that could be expected. In fact, the Democrats didn't even sign on to the Report produced, but instead produced their own minority report, which denied ANY Chinese money influence on the Klintoon election.
Yeah, if that's all you have for a negative on Thompson, there's nothing there.
Thompson can win nationally, no other current Republican candidate who could be considered a Conservative has the potential to win a National election right now.
I agree. Rudy made a great mayor. He would make a great governor of NY. He would make a great senator from NY. He would be great leading up the Dept of Homeland security. But he would not make a great President, at least from a conservative perspective.

Saw it in a recently article discussing his potential candidacy.
Probably over a week ago sorry I can't remember exactly which publication.
Don't be so gullable"
Okay, Wizard, what's the solution YOU have?
The more conservative the candidate, the better---in this case, Fred is terrific. But only because he's both ELECTABLE and CONSERVATIVE. If he doesn't run, I'll reluctantly support Rudy.
Fred's great advantage is his appearance on a TV series, which gives him that recognizable face that is absolutely critical for the 20% of people who don't even pay attention until the day before the election.
I saw an article that said Thompson's wife was urging him to run but it was by a third party. Stating that Thompson himself said his wife was urging him to run is an entirely different matter.
Hugh Hewitt, excellent at picking the dead horse RINOS. LOL
he's (Thompson) both ELECTABLE and CONSERVATIVE.
Bingo!

Fred himself didn't say it- "close friends" did..
Heck, only one divorce and a nice young wife and cute little tot in tow.
Care to explain you ignorant post?
I'd be happy to support Rudy Giuliani as the Attorney General in President Fred Thompson's administration.
I probably didn't answer your question, but let me just say again, it is just that feeling in the pit of my soul that tells me that Rudy is the right man, at this time in history, and I honestly don't feel that about anyone else right now, but Fred Thompson is getting there, and I promise I will keep looking. We all have individual reasons that we pick one certain person, and mine might not be the same as yours, it may even be superficial, in fact, my husband doesn't even agree with me on this choice, but I will promise that regardless of who gets the nomination, I will support that person with all my heart, and money.
Are you suggesting that we haven't been attacked again as being mere luck and not a process put into place and supported vigorously by the President.
Despite leaks to the NYSlimes and constant bashing, this President has continued to tend to the business of keeping America safe.
Other than Rudy there is no other candidate who understands the workings of the Justice Department and the workings of the terrorist mindset. He's walked the walk. The other candidates have NOTHING to suggest they would have a clue as to how to lead this nation.
That would be covered by my clause "but without the morality".
What I see in Rudy that I don't see in W is a willingness to grab his enemies by the throat and choke them to death.
I think Bush has shown the ability and will to do that. It's just his list of "enemies" is much shorter than you would like it to be. He didn't coddle Saddam, or Al Qaeda, or terrorists in guantanamo. He does coddle democrats but he doesn't see them as the enemy.
Absolutely not, when I stated he had lost the fire, I meant only in his public appearances, and not what he was doing behind the scene. I Thank God everyday that President Bush has been the President for the past 6 years. I just wish he would articulate his fight better. Those speeches immediately after 9/11 were historic. I don't see those anymore. That was all I meant. I think that Rudy is the leader that could bring back that feeling for me.
