The New York Times published a lengthy editor's note yesterday. Actually, it published two of them; both are on this site today. This one involves a former naval construction worker who told the Times magazine that she served in Iraq, was in a Humvee that blew up, and was raped twice while serving in the Navy.

The Slimes said in a statement that she thought she was in Iraq.

Why let a little thing like the truth get in the way of a good anti-military story?

Summary: We couldn't prove it was true before the deadline, so since it might make the war (and by extension the President) look bad, we ran it anyway.

Aaron Rectica, who runs the magazine’s research desk, disputes that. He said that by [the NYSlime's silly company] deadline, the Navy had not given the Times any reason to disbelieve Randall’s claim of service in Iraq. Rectica said the Navy only told the paper that Randall’s commanders believed she’d been in Iraq but that no one in the unit had been in combat.

Oh, I see. The mighty Aaron Rectica sits in judgment of the US Navy. The US Navy needs to hurry if it hopes to please Aaron Rectica!

I read a statement made by the author's significant other that basically raises the fake but accurate defense.

And yet the big shots at the NYTimes can't figure out why ciculation is in decline?

"What's all this talk I hear about the Right Wing Conspiracy trying to Swift Boat another Democrat War Hero. What was that? She was never in Iraq? She made up the entire story? Well that's different. Nevermind."

Can the Slimes be sued for slander/libel? This was a knowing lie.

Someone probably identified the fraud and the NYSlimes probably then went out and offered their "source" some sort of payments if she'd cooperate in officially being outed as a fraud - instead of just admiting their own complete lack of due diligence because she made a "story" that - like Dan Rather - they believed was true.

Remember, liberal/leftist journalism is a religion, not an objective profession.

Hey, as long as she imagined she was in Iraq, the NY Slimes can rely upon "her truth" just as surely as any 'Rats can proclaim "my truth" (ala former Gov. McGreevey). It does not matter if there are any facts at hand -- for "fake but accurate" journalism to work, the DBM needs only present the ravings of any libs who care to be quoted. Oh, and if they don't care to be quoted or named, that's fine too.... "fake but accurate" works just great with all sorts of super-duper secret sources, unnamed "former ambassador" types, secret spies ala Valerie Plame, etc.
