3/23/2007 - SAN ANTONIO (AFNEWS) -- She has been anticipating this moment since being crowned Miss Arkansas USA in October and it is finally here.

Second Lt. Kelly George, a resident of Sherwood, Ark., and the deputy chief of public affairs for the 314th Airlift Wing at Little Rock Air Force Base, vies for the title of Miss USA March 23. The pageant will air live from Los Angeles at 9 p.m. EDT.

She admits to feeling some butterflies, but she thinks they are not a sign of nerves but rather excitement.

Lieutenant George has been preparing for pageants for more than a decade and says training for pageants is similar to being an Airman in the Air Force.

Although it is a different uniform, different shoes especially, it is the same idea of representing something bigger than yourself, she said.

"Kelly represents the Air Force and Arkansas well," said Brig. Gen. Kip Self, 314th AW commander. "She takes to heart the spirit of service in dedicating herself to civic duty and service to the country."

According to the Miss USA Web site, contestants must be savvy, goal-oriented and aware, and display those characteristics in their everyday lives.

"You have to be a good role model in the Air Force and as Miss Arkansas USA," she said. "The key is to embody all the qualities of a healthy lifestyle, be a good role model and represent yourself and the state well."

The last time a Miss Arkansas won the Miss USA title was in 1982.

For the talent competition she should field strip an M-4 Carbine and reassemble while being timed.

A capital idea! But omit the words "an M-4 Carbine and reassemble."

I have a buddy who was a finance officer in the Air Force during Vietnam, served stateside. His line is "Yeah, we were titless WAFs", said with a completely straight face. It still cracks me up.

I don't think that is the case anymore. I believe all services have gone to the one generic title of Soldier, Sailor, Airman, and Marine for everyone. I kinda like it. Do you feel it should be more separated?

After 29 years in the Army, the customs of the service are hard to set aside. The "one-size-fits-all" concept is not easy to accept. Under the heading of "good order and discipline," I still believe there are good reasons for retaining the distinctions. When "we are one in the spirit" becomes the norm, "democracy" begins to raise its ugly head...the military is not a democracy, it is a benevolent dictatorship...and it needs to be. Somebody has to be in charge, and it is never put to a vote as to who that is. (Maybe in the Air Force where there are really two services: the pilots, and everybody else)

Every long term officer at some point gets assigned to one of the two Rs. Recruiting or Reserve Components and that is still recruiting of a sort. If she stays long enough she'll end up in that.
