Rangel: I support Giuliani-Kerik ticket in 2008

NEW YORK (AP) -- Never say New Yorkers don't have sense of humor -- especially when they can stick it to the other side.

A powerful New York Democrat, a mischievous gleam in his eye, is offering an early endorsement in the 2008 presidential race, where the field includes many hometown hopefuls like former Mayor Rudy Giuliani, Gov. George Pataki and Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton.

"I'm supporting Giuliani for the Republican," Rep. Charles Rangel said Monday, pausing briefly before delivering the punchline. "Kerik, as well," he added, referring to Giuliani's disgraced former police commissioner Bernard Kerik.

Kerik pleaded guilty earlier this year to misdemeanor charges of taking money from contractors with alleged mob ties, when he was the city's corrections chief. He was also President Bush's choice to head the Department of Homeland Security, but the nomination was scrapped after questions arose about his background.

Political observers say Giuliani's relationship with Kerik could be a problem if the former mayor goes ahead with a run for president.

I despise Rangel, but that's pretty funny.

KERIK KO'D A TWO-YEAR PRISON DEAL (Giuliani's buddy allegedly gave false info to WH)

Kerik was Mayor Giuliani's driver and bodyguard, and NYPD commissioner under Giuliani. Rudy recommended Kerik to GW Bush for the Homeland Security job in 2004. Kerik's nomination was scrapped after questions arose about his background......leaving GWB embarrased on the global stage.

Kerik Turns Down Federal Plea Deal (Giuliani's corrupt high school dropout police commissioner)

Excerpt:

News Channel 4 has learned former NYPD commissioner Bernard Kerik has rejected a plea deal offered by federal prosecutors that would have required Kerik to serve time in prison.

Federal prosecutors offered Kerik a deal where he would plead guilty to tax fraud and illegal eavesdropping conspiracy charges, sources familiar with the negotiations say. In exchange for his guilty plea, investigators were willing to end the federal criminal probe into Kerik's alleged wrongdoing which includes allegations of mortgage fraud, tax fraud, conspiracy to eavesdrop and making false statements on his application to become U.S. Homeland Security Secretary.

"We rejected the plea deal because Mr. Kerik paid his taxes and did nothing wrong," said Kerik's attorney Ken Breen. A spokesman for U.S. attorney Michael Garcia declined to comment on the investigation as did officials with the FBI, IRS, City Department of Investigation and Westchester County District Attorney.

Two people with lots of negative personal baggage running as a GOP Presidential ticket. The mainstream media would eat them up alive. It's no wonder why Rangel chose them.

Being a Giuliani-supporting FReeper keeps getting more and more surreal. If Ted Kennedy came out in favor of Giuliani, some "Republicans" would still agree Giuliani to be a good choice. It's like core values just don't matter anymore.

Whatever you think of Rudy, please don't tell me you think Rangel is serious.

I think Corin may be right, JDM. I don't get the impression Rep. Charles Rangel was being sincere when he made that endorsement statement. After going through his house.gov site, I get the impression, Rangel may have been being sarcastic.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:
December 17, 1999

DON'T DEMAGOGUE ELIAN

Rudy Giuliani apparently cares more about using little Elian Gonzalez's terrible plight for his own political purposes than talking about issues that really matter to residents of the State of New York.

Elian is the 6-year-old boy who through no fault of his own was shipwrecked off the coast of Florida, lost his mother, and has fallen into the middle of an international custody battle. Now the Mayor's aides say Mr. Giuliani is considering inviting Elian to New York to stand with him in the spotlight during our city's millennium celebrations. If the Mayor and his people succeed in getting Elian here for New Year's Eve, they will have literally dropped the ball.

This is a political year for Mr. Giuliani. It's one thing for him to arrest homeless people in an attempt to boost his Senate candidacy. But it's quite another to take an innocent child who lost his mother and is away from his father this Christmas and put him in a terrifying situation, on stage, in front of millions of people.

How would any parent react to their child being used without their permission in a blatant attempt to boost the Mayor's hopes for higher office? Does Rudy Giuliani have no shame in seeking to satisfy his own ambitions?

If the mayor wants to raise funds in Miami or Union City for his campaign, then showing off Elian around the city makes sense. Yet in taking advantage of a boy too young to decide what is in his own best interests, Mr. Giuliani risks demonstrating to voters around the state that he's more interested in meddling in international affairs than in discussing issues they care about such as education, health care, and Social Security.

Mr. Giuliani's grandstanding certainly won't resolve the Cuban question and may help launch a new wave of Cuban immigrants exercising what an aide to the mayor called their "right to choose" freedom. It is abundantly clear under our bilateral agreement with Cuba that we have no other option but to return anyone found on the high seas who has left that country illegally.

Now you have to wonder if Kerik gets stuck with the 2 years in prison, will he offer to cut a deal and spill his guts on all the dirt on Rudy?

Its not like Rudy was duped and didn't know who he was hiring, they were lifelong friends and business partners.

It's like core values just don't matter anymore.

It matters little to some Rudy supporters because they never had them to begin with. No to Rudy!
