ST. PAUL, Minnesota (AP) -- A 17-year-old girl who spent weeks looking for her missing dog unwrapped a box left on her doorstep and found the pet's severed head inside, authorities said.
Homicide investigators were looking into the case because of the "implied" terroristic threat, St. Paul Police Sgt. Jim Gray said. The Humane Society of the United States said Wednesday it was offering a reward of up to $2,500 for information leading to an arrest and conviction.
"This was extraordinarily heinous," said Dale Bartlett, the Humane Society's deputy manager for animal cruelty issues. "I deal with hundreds and hundreds of cruelty cases each year. When I read about this case, it took my breath away. It's horrible."
After Crystal Brown's 4-year-old Australian shepherd mix,Chevy, wandered away last month, she put up "missing" posters in her neighborhood and went door to door looking for him. She called the St. Paul animal shelter and rode the bus there several times.
"I felt empty," Crystal told the Star Tribune of Minneapolis. "I couldn't talk to anyone. He was my dog. It was just me and him. ... I told him everything and he never shared any of my secrets."
Two weeks ago, a gift-wrapped box was left at the house Crystal shares with her grandmother. The box had batteries on top, and a note that said "Congratulations Crystal. This side up. Batteries included."
Crystal opened the box and found her dog's head inside. The box also contained Valentine's Day candy.
Crystal screamed when she saw her dog's face.
"She was just hysterical," said Crystal's grandmother, Shirley Brown. "She was screaming. She said, 'Grandma, it's my dog's head!'
"I said, 'no it can't be!"'

Very sick. I'm sure the list of suspects can be counted on one hand though. They'll get him.
And when they catch him .....no cat lovers on the jury!
March 14: Crystal Brown wipes away tears recalling her late pet Chevey. Her new puppy, Diesel, plays beside her.
I mean .. hatred of dogs and a penchenat for beheadings says one thing to me.
If this were done to one of my dogs, the responsible individual would be best advised to turn himself into the police for his own protection.
I have an aussie shepherd/blue heeler mix. He's a great dog. If someone killed him I would not call the cops. I wouldn't want them focusing their suspicions on me when they found a man's head in a box.
What nerve. Valentine's Day was a month ago.
Seriously, though....whoever did this is exceptionally cruel and needs to be monitored. Someone capable of this does not have a bright future.
You left a few things out:
Muslim hatred of Valentine's Day...along with everything else, of course.
Across the river from Minneapolistan.
"Batteries included" & "This side up".
Had it been me, the bomb squad would have been opening the package.
Call me paranoid, but I haven't lived safely as long as I have by being blindly trusting.
Good God - just what the hell is wrong with people these days?
This person has a lot of cold hatred. I doubt if it is a high school kid, but it could be. Whoever it is has some strong connection to this girl.
Good questions with no answer here. But the action taken by the police indicates they are taking it more seriously than a neighborhood "prank":
Homicide investigators were looking into the case because of the "implied" terroristic threat, St. Paul Police Sgt. Jim Gray said.
I think you are right, the girl should be very careful. She may be next.
This person hated the girl (because of rejection?) and wanted to get back at her by killing what he felt meant the most to her. That could have been anyone - Christian, Muslim, Hindu, atheist...
"I wouldn't want them focusing their suspicions on me when they found a man's head in a box."
+1
I hope the prison sentence is nice and long.
A pet's biggest risk is the former boyfriend.
I doubt if it is a high school kid, but it could be
Weird. Did you know this story is over a week old?

(WCCO) A St. Paul family is both heartbroken and terrified tonight after their dog was killed.
St. Paul Police say someone cut off the dog's head and wrapped it in a box for the family to find.
The case is especially devastating because the Australian Shepherd was a special therapy dog owned by a 17-year-old girl.
"Nobody had seen the dog," said Bobbi Brown, mother of the dog's owner.
You got that right! If this were my daughter, she would never be out of my sight and I would have firearm(s) ready at all times.
