Bill Simon, an unsuccessful 2002 California gubernatorial candidate, former federal prosecutor under Giuliani and bedrock social conservative, delivered a spirited intro.
"He comforted us. He inspired us in what was one of the darkest moments in our history," Simon said, extolling Giuliani's leadership after the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks. "Extraordinary times cry out for extraordinary leadership, and these as such times."
"It would be fair to say that Bill Simon is using his personal cachet to vouch for Giuliani," said Jon Fleischman, a conservative Republican activist and publisher of the Flash Report political newsletter. "Giuliani is a moderate on social issues, yet Simon has been a champion to conservatives on those same issues.
"When I talk to conservatives supporting Giuliani, many of them say, 'I'm putting my faith on what Bill Simon says.' "
First he told a hotel ballroom crowded with conservative GOP delegates that his former boss was "a fellow Ronald Reagan Republican," who cut taxes, cleaned up New York and put "countless career criminals behind bars."
He said Simon explained that Giuliani opposes partial-birth abortions and tax-funded abortions and _ though Giuliani supports domestic partnerships _ he believes marriage is strictly between man and a woman.
"If he (Simon) is endorsing Giuliani, it makes some members of the conservative wing of the party feel safer," said Gaines, a Giuliani convert. "I did have concerns. But with the explanation of how he (Giuliani) would view Supreme Court appointments, I have a level of comfort."

Please, I've seen posts simply pointing out Rudy's liberal record and the poster gets called a "Rudybasher."
In fact, those attacks on a man respected worldwide for his leadership during that time only make the attacker look bad, not Rudy.
Yes, Rudy did a good job running NYC, but that's all he's good for. Let him clean up Detroit or be Mayor of D.C.
"I have included in my morning and evening prayers every day, the prayer that the Federal Government not bail out New York City."
- Ronald Reagan
Any of these murders committed by law-abiding citizens?
You people don't get it! I was supposed to be on a plane in Newark that morning!
I thank God I changed my flight time!
My parents were totally distraught until they heard my voice on the phone.
You guys that don't live in this area and will never understand, if you can't get it by now, you never will!~
This had nothing to do with Rudy... This has to do with being attacked... GET IT!
I would rather have a fiscally-liberal Republican than a social-liberal Republican.
I think Hunter will come around on fiscal matters. Of course, it's an albatross for him, but if he chooses someone like Mike Pence then the ticket is virtually unbeatable.
Isn't it interesting that so many people have to come out and attempt to sooth conservative suspicions--because the candidate and his record cannot...
This thread is about Bill Simon breaking conservative ranks and supporting/defending Rudy Giuliani. In my post at #21 I point out that if Simon wants to support Rudy, that is his personal choice. But his support of Giuliani shouldn't be confused with the issues relevant to conservatives. I then go on to list those issues that are relevant to conservatives. It goes beyond one or two issues and has nothing to do with Ronald Reagan. You RudyLoons are desperate.
I was going to take my family to NYC in Aug 2001 but it was 100 degrees so we postponed it to Thanksgiving when we were back on the East Coast.
We took the ferry from Hoboken with my mom (GoldwaterChick), my wife and my two kids (14G and 10B). We first saw all of the pictures, teddy bears, notes from kids to parents, etc. all weatherstained, and we could still smell burning Ground Zero. My daughter read some of the items and then had to sit down to cry. Up until then it was just something on TV; but at that moment she realized just how real and serious it was.
Good point and I agree.
This is the mindset of people who for some reason want to act like 9/11 either didn't happen, or because it didn't happen in their neighborhood is less important.
I can see NYC from my balcony. Every night I pray for peace and the city. I am close enough that fallout would hit me.
It is a remarkable sight to behold, and I hate to see posts from people who don't have a clue!
You respond:I would rather have a fiscally-liberal Republican than a social-liberal Republican.
What the...? I'm sure you would - but I would not. I am sick of being used by the social conservatives who, it seems, could care less about limited government.
Where did I criticize 9/11?
My comments are related to the post that called Rudy "human garbage" just like his city.
I don't have a problem with most posts, actually -- even spam (used by all sides). What I dislike is personal disrespect, which is usually the province of only a few posters.
But Ron Paul is also a social conservative too. A President who believes that unborn fetusus should be killed right up to the point of birth, and that the 2nd Amendment is for duck hunting simply has no credibility and cannot be trusted to lead on other issues, including fiscal issues, as well.
Those polls don't mean squat.
We had been in the city a few days after 9/11 to take the dog food, but this park was so sad and inspiring! The American Airlines crews were there having a pray vigil for their fallen friends.,p>As a preface to this, My brother died in an accident while on duty 8/7. He was a narc and the head of the bomb squad in Guilford county NC. My parents found a wanted poster of Osama the evening of 9/11.
They told me about it the next day, when i called home.
Since 1972 every Republican candidate that was leading at this point has won the nomination. That doesn't mean Rudy will win it, but to dismiss the polls as meaningless is not very realistic either.
I can't imagine someone with your concern for fiscal issues saying that you think that it's better to have a fiscal liberal as president, than a social liberal. Look at how much destruction Bush has wrought over the past 6 years. Now imagine the same 6 years, but with a fiscally conservative social liberal as President.
