Bill Simon (CA conservative) soothes conservatives' concerns over Giuliani
Scripps News ^ | March 14, 2007 | PETER HECHT

Posted on 03/14/2007 4:21:46 PM PDT by FairOpinion

Bill Simon, an unsuccessful 2002 California gubernatorial candidate, former federal prosecutor under Giuliani and bedrock social conservative, delivered a spirited intro.

"He comforted us. He inspired us in what was one of the darkest moments in our history," Simon said, extolling Giuliani's leadership after the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks. "Extraordinary times cry out for extraordinary leadership, and these as such times."

"It would be fair to say that Bill Simon is using his personal cachet to vouch for Giuliani," said Jon Fleischman, a conservative Republican activist and publisher of the Flash Report political newsletter. "Giuliani is a moderate on social issues, yet Simon has been a champion to conservatives on those same issues.

"When I talk to conservatives supporting Giuliani, many of them say, 'I'm putting my faith on what Bill Simon says.' "

First he told a hotel ballroom crowded with conservative GOP delegates that his former boss was "a fellow Ronald Reagan Republican," who cut taxes, cleaned up New York and put "countless career criminals behind bars."

He said Simon explained that Giuliani opposes partial-birth abortions and tax-funded abortions and _ though Giuliani supports domestic partnerships _ he believes marriage is strictly between man and a woman.

"If he (Simon) is endorsing Giuliani, it makes some members of the conservative wing of the party feel safer," said Gaines, a Giuliani convert. "I did have concerns. But with the explanation of how he (Giuliani) would view Supreme Court appointments, I have a level of comfort."

"Gray Davis spent millions on attacking Riordan during the primary for not being conservative enough."

Same tactics used everywhere. Choose your weaker opponent by destroying the strongest in the primary.

Well, he can sue me, but I didn't know that New York City was human.

For the umpteenth time.

This debate is all about Rudy Giuliani and his lifetime record of supporting liberal issues and liberal causes. Its not about anyone else.

I'm judging the former mayor on more then one or two issues. I might agree with Rudy 20% of the time. That isn't good enough to get my vote.

Well, I consider myself an honorary Southerner, as my parents and some of my immediate family were born in Mississippi.

Did he ever sign it?

No. But he did support it. Isn't that what people are bashing Rudy for?

Reagan Man made a blanket statement that conservatives don't support the assault weapons ban. That would mean that Ronald Reagan himself was no conservative.

You said no such thing in your post. Rather, you made the statement that "[c]onservatives DO NOT support an assault weapons ban." Do you still agree with yourself on that? (If not, I might suspect that you are Giuliani.)

I have no patience with people from one part of this country expressing hatred for other parts. Those were AMERICANS (and also citizens of other countries) who were murdered in a cowardly and barbaric fashion on 9/11 in New York. An attack on NYC is an attack on us all.

One can strongly oppose Rudy's campaign for President without denigrating him. In fact, those attacks on a man respected worldwide for his leadership during that time only make the attacker look bad, not Rudy. Proof once more that hatred is not a very practical approach.

Well whoopdedoo, I am a bonifide southerner. I married and moved to NYC suburbs in 2003, and unless you were here on 9/11 as I was, you need to STFU~!

But he did support it.

Uh, his press secretary was shot and paralyzed in front of his own eyes.

Of course he's going to come out in favor of it so Sarah Brady can continue to remain relevant at D.C. cocktail parties.

Rudy loses my vote on principle on the issues of abortion, gay rights, gun rights, and immigration.

I have seen your posts in several places now. I think it is telling that you do not list smaller government among your top priorities. I do not think you are an isolated case, either.

In other words what I'm saying is that your priorities do not fit what I define as conservatism. They define religion - religious priorities. I know that I and many fiscal conservatives are tired of being used by the social conservatives. We are told that if we pander to you and go along with someone who passes your litmus tests - that we will also get smaller government. But it never happens. Duncan Hunter who is so popular among social conservatives here is NOT a fiscal conservative. And as you list what matters to you - it is so clear that limited government is NOT among them.

I am not meaning to pick on you - but as I say - I have seen several of your posts lately and I wanted to respond this time.

These threads always take a dive. Take heart in the fact that Rudy haters and haters of others in general are not going to be happy with the GOP nominee regardless because it won't be one of their lofty one percenters.

So you're saying that there are mitigating circumstances? Rudy had 2000 people killed in his city, every year.

Exactly! I was in NYC area when this happened. My future husband and I took in dog food for the work dogs, because the news networks were telling us to. I cried all day. We went to mass at St. Patrick's with lots of NYPD and FDNY. Anyone who wasn't there needs to get a clue as to how many of us lost people we cared about that day.

FR feels like DU these days with slams at NYC.!!!!!!!!!!!!
