The Great Disconnect between the Republican Party and the Conservative Base

The Great Disconnect between the Republican Party and the Conservative Base

The Republican Party better get its act together like yesterday and realize that without its Conservative base, that it will be left to wonder in the wilderness for many more years to come.

Republicans in Congress are now back in the minority after 12 years of majorities granted to them by the base who envisioned the death of big government agencies like the Departments of Education and Energy with control of the purse strings from 1994-2006 and in 2000 with the election of George W. Bush the base demanded the unabated end of the Clinton Era Tactics of manipulation federal government numbers and phony government surpluses.

Conservatives felt that Bush and company would govern like Conservatives, but after 6 years the base saw no victories as the federal government grew bigger under Bush with “No Child Left Behind” and “Medicare Part D.” Bush refused to fight for our most Conservatives Nominees allowing them to be blocked for years on end by a minority within the minority Democrats Caucus in the Senate. Bush’s “new tone” in Washington DC amounted to the abandonment of his Conservative Principals within 6 months of his first term.

Liberal Republicans like John McCain were allowed to cut deals behind close doors on Judicial Nominees, Taxes and Immigration, while the Conservatives in the Senate seem dumbfounded and refused to stop this self-proclaimed maverick and his band of merry sellouts. McCain seems to take joy in stabbing the base in the back every chance he gets, gleefully going on MSNBC to be praised by Chris Matthews, because he feels that he is somehow owed the Presidency and blames the base for his 2000 Primary defeats to George W. Bush. Now McCain wants to be the 2008 Nominee, “Sorry John, but paybacks are a bi*ch” and I will not vote for what amounts to the Republican Party’s Manchurian Candidate.

The House Managers became fat, dumb and happy and governed more like Republicrats than Conservatives and they thought that the fears of impeachment, higher taxes and liberal control of the House would be enough to rally the base to their banner again in 2006, but this time their rally cries fell on deaf ears and their majorities were lost.

The Republican Party still refuses to learn from 2006’s mid-term election defection by the base, Republicans need to realize that they live and die by the votes of the base and that any candidate that does not appeal to the base will not receive our votes. It is better to lose to a Democrat, than to elect a CINO (Conservative In Name Only).

Now as we enter the 2008 Presidential Race we have Northern Eastern Republicans like Rudy Giuliani and Mitt Romney trying to sell themselves to the base as having Conservative Credentials, but when one looks at their records and how they have governed, it has been anything but Conservative, yet there are those in the Republican Party who are trying to sell Giuliani as our best bet in 2008. The only difference in a Liberal Rudy Giuliani and Liberal Hillary Clinton is the fact of which bathrooms they select to use and there are some who are willing to even question that.

As a Conservative, I would rather back a Conservative Republican Candidate and see him lose the Presidential Election on principal than back a Liberal Republican IN Name Only like Rudy Giuliani, Mitt Romney and John McCain, who will end up stabbing me in the back anyway and govern himself by poll and focus groups.

The base would rather lose on principals than win out of convenience and the leaders of the Republican Party better start realizing that.

Who's electable? Stand and deliver.

I'm not sure what you mean.

Who, then, is electable?

This could start a terrible precedent.

The precedent already exists in cases where a state intends to execute someone for a crime of which he's been convicted. Why should it not be extended to a case where a state intends to execute someone without even the slightest allegation that she's committed any crime whatsoever?

That is a jurisdiction thing. The case was already decided by the court.

Could you post a passage of the constitution that says congress can intervene in on going court cases....then you will have impressed me and I will be quiet.

The last section of Amendment XIV, if someone is being denied due process. A slight stretch, perhaps, but nowhere near as bad as the other contortions the Constitution has endured.

Some of you folks drive me nuts. A good name for your group is the "I Love This HOLE In My Foot Club".Rudy is never getting my vote, Mitt is a flip flopper, McNut is a backstabber, Newt had a girl friend, Fred Thompson isn`t a virgin, My GOD, we are trying to elect a President, we aren`t selecting the Pope. Very rarely does any body speak FOR a candidate and hardly ever is the alternative mentioned. We sound like the Rats when they discuss Iraq. Nothing about how they have prolonged the conflict, how their comments give aid and comfort to the other side, and nothing about the consequences of us losing. In the quest for the guy or gal that hits each and every issue just right, we are living up to somes goal of shooting themselves in the foot! Hello Madam President, Ms. Rodamn.

I should have added....could you imagine if congress started getting envolved while these cases were in trial?

I'm tired of arguing with those who will not accept Julies own words as fact, and believe all these degradation might scare us into supporting their pet liberal.

Congress has passed legislation in the past allowing federal courts to examine state death penalty cases, presumably on Amendment XIV grounds. I see no reason why Terri's case should have been constitutionally ineligible for similar treatment.

One of the reasons I like Romney is his his ability to articulate "on the spot". He knows what he believes.

You question whether Rudy is electable.

Well, I asked you why you think Rudy is so electable. Will you answer that?

Who, then, is electable?

Normally I would wait until you answered what I put to you, but anyway:

I am not sure. "Electable" means a lot of things. Presidents are elected on positions, leadership, and appearence (and some other things, but lets keep it simple for now). The weights of these factors change over time. Sometimes underlying positions matter more than other times.

But, the weight of the evidence since 1980 (and we could go back to '76 when the "electable" Ford beat Reagan) is that the best candidate for the GOP has positions that are more conservative than Rudy's. Rudy has good leadership skills, although I am unsure if his personal life will have any effect.

Anyway, that's all I am saying, is that it is hard for me to see any evidence that Rudy is this tremendously electable guy. Now, of course, that does not mean that the favorite of conservatives is neccessarily the most electable. I don't think Gingrich is very electable. I will be voting for Ron Paul, but am totally aware that he is not electable. I tend to like the Fred Thompson idea. But, as I said, I just don't believe in the median voter model which basically states that whoever is most to the left is the most electable. It hasn't worked since at least 1976.

The laws allowing federal habeus corpus proceedings in death penalty cases have been invoked in cases in which the accused had already been convicted and was merely awaiting execution. I see nothing that makes Terri's case constitutionally any less justifiable.

Duncan Hunter is electable. Any true conservative would be electable if we all came together.

We conservatives are political because of principles, all you others just want the big R to win at any cost.

What difference would it make to you?

Hi Delphinium! It does get tiring, doesn't it? So many of us have stated unequivocally that we will never, ever vote for Giulianni! Yet somehow, they think we can be badgered and scared into supporting him because only he can defeat Hillary! When will they learn!!
